Yep. Airborne troops are lightly armoured and not meant to act like marines. I suspect Trump just thinks it romantic to use these troops, but we'll see what their actual role will be.

Almost 7,000 extra troops. But he's just moving them around, because what else are you gonna do with troops? Don't read too much into it. ETA: bloody hell do I really need to use the sarcasm tag? Sometimes I despair of the culture.

He's gonna get some killed, declare victory, do some inside trading and then get some more people killed. The usual. War crimes for inside trading.  I remember how Jimmy Carter gave up a peanut farm because he was worried about conflict of interest.

Just for clarity because this is a *very* misleading headline they’re being deployed to bases in the Middle East, however it is still unconfirmed if they are actually going into Iran or not. A troop buildup in the region certainly makes it increasingly more likely, but it is not a sure thing as of yet like the headline would imply.

This cannot be overstated. I’ve pointed out in previous days that there is still not nearly enough manpower and equipment in the region to launch an actual invasion of anything. They’ll need 10x that of what has been reportedly been moved around. When we start seeing major mechanized divisions getting moved that direction, we have a problem.

What’s the point then? Just throwing targets out there. There are already US air defense units on rotation. Why send light infantry? Give ‘em shotguns for FPV drone defense? Do you think a couple of MEUs and CSGs lack the equipment to take an island or two?

To stare menacingly. Or to be able to deploy into combat roles quickly if the decision ends up being made to do so. If I were a betting man this is a move related to the negotiations. Several thousand troops on your border is a bit of a more immediate threat than those same troops a few days away
