One month into the conflict in Iran, Trump's gut-instinct approach is not proving effective, writes the BBC's international editor.

In the same way that a dog follows the instinct to eat its own shit, sure

Seriously! This is a stupid article. He is not basing shit off of instinct. He’s being told what to do by oil execs and Israel

His instincts are telling him he's getting paid to do all this stuff though.

It's the BBC. At least since the threat of Trump's lawsuit, they've been bowlderising anything that sounds like direct criticism. One of my favourites recently was that Trump is "shaking up the old world order".

Donald Trump never had a plan for a drawn out conflict. This is the result of poor planning, arrogance and incompetence. It's also about Netanyahu's enthusiasm for war with his middle east neighbors and Trump being the perfect useful idiot to help him achieve his decades long dream of destroying Iran. I mean, we literally have Bibi on video admitting this... That he's been waiting for this moment for FORTY years, and that Trump was the only chump who could help him realize his military ambitions in the middle east. And yeah, this war is also about Trump's ego, or his desire to project his own strength through the unbridled use of the military. You know, imperialistic dictator kind of behavior. After Venezuela, Trump got it in his head that he could decapitate any government that opposes him. But it's not really going as planned—because there is no plan. And besides, in Venezuela, Trump removed Maduro from power but kept the oppressive government intact in return for their cooperation. So much for liberating the people... That said, other than wholesale destruction, what the f*** have we actually accomplished in Iran? The regime hasn't "changed," the Iranian people have not been "liberated," Iran was never building a nuclear weapon, nor did they pose an "imminent threat" to the United States. Meaning of course that this war was conducted under false pretenses and Trump's cabinet has been trying hopelessly (and failing) to cover up that fact, which is why their messaging has been so erratic and inconsistent. And now Trump is desperately searching for an offramp. Like when he told the Iranian people to "rise up" and "overtake" their government because he wanted to wipe his hands clean of the bloody aftermath of a war he helped start with no long-term, coherent strategy for the future. However, Trump can't just up and leave because, for one, it would signal defeat and/or reflect very poorly on him, but more important than that, because he helped trigger a global energy crisis after dismissing warnings about very obvious Iranian countermeasures in the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf. And while Trump is pushing back deadlines and claiming that the war is "winding down," or that "productive conversations" are happening, he is simultaneously sending thousands of *more* troops to the region and demanding *more* money from the government to fuel operation "epic failure." At the same time, Israel is bombing Iran's Capital and Iran is firing back at neighboring countries. Worse yet, American troops are dead and dying and we're continuing to bomb Iran without any regard for the civilians we're supposed to be "liberating." MILLIONS of people have been displaced across the Middle East. Thousands of innocent noncombatants have been killed in this war so far—some of them CHILDREN at the hands of our own military and its commander in chief. Together, the US and Israel are shelling schools, hospitals, heritage sites, non-military and civilian infrastructure, and even residential areas. Some Iranians doubt whether regime change is realistic and whether this war is even worth it... As far as "regime change" goes, the already dying Ayatollah was replaced by his more hardline son who we've managed to radicalize all the same after killing his entire family, and who has deep connections and sway with the IRGC. Additionally, one fifth of the population still supports the Islamic Republic and grieves the deaths of Iranian leaders. When it comes to the economic side of things, this war has caused a worldwide oil crisis, which has both short and long term repercussions for the American economy, and an economy that was already sliding before the war even began. A ground invasion is all but inevitable at this point because we presently have nothing to really show for our efforts. Without "boots on the ground" there's no way to facilitate structural change in Iran, no other way to seize control of the Strait of Hormuz, no chance of poaching whatever uranium Iran has left lying around, and no possibility at all of taking Kharg Island and thus crippling Iran's oil production indefinitely. For that matter, if the US doesn't launch a ground invasion, it can't make up for its incompetence and lack of any meaningful results (sunk cost fallacy). At this point, ordering troops to invade Iran is the only way for the US to at least appear like it's committing to "objectives" that don't just involve bombing the f*** out of the country.

Your analysis is totally wrong. What we are seeing IS THE DESIRED EFFECT. It's all going according to plan. Boots on the ground will just extend the USA further, use more US resources, for a go-nowhere drawn-out campaign. AS PLANNED.

What a way to describe it. "On instinct" no it's based on blackmail, being Netanyahu's pet, and avoiding consequences for rxping children

You mean the hunches of a man of below-average intellect deep into his decline into dementia aren't winning moves? I'm shocked, I say, shocked.

It's based on campaign contributions from the Military-Industrial Complex to the GOP.

But one of his family members was a professor! He’s super-smart because of that. How can this be??

It's almost as though military action and geopolitics are complicated and require thought, expertise, general understandings of things.

Donald Trump is quoted to saying that he knows war better than America's generals

NeoMegaRyuMKII Mar 29, 2026 +1
I remember. I also remember that in the leadup to the 2016 election, he said he had a plan to eliminate (I think it was) Al Qaeda in 30 days but he wouldn't share because... reasons. And then when he got into office and was asked about the plan, he revealed that his "plan" was "tell the generals to figure out how to eliminate them in 30 days."

Trump and Hegseth's "instinct" for war is to strut around pretending to be macho and shit-talking. Believe or not, UFC pre-fight smack talk is not what actually wins anyone a fight. But to these clowns, if you "talk tough enough" and throw enough bombs at something, you're sure to win!

He read the war strategy writings of the famous Chinese military general Shih Tzu.

The most (and simultaneously least) surprising feature about this is the willingness of his cult following to sway their opinions in whatever direction Trump's dementia takes him. Logic has sunk so far deep out of the MAGA base, it's genuinely a combination of enthralling and terrifying

Trump isn't out standing in the deck of an aircraft carrier and waging war. He's just the empty figurehead for the GOP administration that IS waging this war. The republican party could have prevented this for over a decade. They could fix it at any minute. Republicans refuse to do their duty, because their values are absolutely un-American. F*** the GOP, f*** Trump, and f*** republican voters.
3
Warm-Attempt7773 Mar 29, 2026 +1
This is correct. And not only could the Republican Party have prevented this...they were working toward it. This is the Oligarchal takeover of the world.

His only instinct is to be a loser. No surprise there. I’ve some advice for The King… The six “P’s”: Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance Which is to say… This “war” should never have been part of his “plan” I believe this f*** up is going to cost him dearly. The rest of us as well.

Warm-Attempt7773 Mar 29, 2026 +1
But he isn't losing. The USA is losing. Trump is winning.

Based on who is around him. Put Lindsey Graham beside him 24/7 ,and he would declare ww3

This war was in planning before the first Trump admin. Why do you think he vacated the nuclear agreement? And at the same time as the 'clear skies' over Ukraine treaty? This was supposed to happen at the same time as Russia invading Ukraine. Imagine the chaos that would have caused.

Not sure I’d use the word instinct.

Bold to assume there was a plan to begin given that those at the pentagon who said, we need a plan! are no longer at the pentagon.
