My dad, who complained about gas prices under Biden, now says "the president doesn't directly control the price of gas!"
Except, you know, when the president decides to unilaterally bomb a sovereign oil-producing nation just for fun. There's a pretty direct correlation there, bub.

After Saudis cut production coincidentally before midterms 2022, Biden's administration actually did a lot to keep prices from getting worse, including taking heat for tapping the largest amount from the emergency reserves to do so.
Which this administration is now preparing to do as well, while ensuring to keep their total tap just shy of Biden's to avoid the negative press, except they caused the problem themselves.

Gas went up under Biden because of the OPEC 2020 deal which slashed oil production to help stop the free fall of oil prices due to COVID. It wasn’t even a bad deal at the time BUT when the world opened back up after the rollout of the vaccine there wasn’t enough oil supply to handle it and OPEC didn’t increase production until the the deal expired in 2022, at which point gas prices drastically fell.
Want to guess who was President in 2020?

As an American who has moved to a Canadism city with good public transportation, it's now wild to me that gas prices can single-handedly sway an election in the US. And it's not like Canadians don't care at all about gas prices, it's just that it seems insane to me now that they're are American voters seated by that single issue.

Sort of. But not exactly.
This is like the "[not even wrong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_even_wrong)" issue where a claim can be made which doesn't even meet the threshold of being wrong, to say nothing of being right.
The trouble with these folk you've labeled as liars is that they have lost touch with the sort of epistemology others employ. To them truth is no longer based on evidence or even reality. Truth is derived from their Authority or Idol or Tribe. As such, they are always right(tm), correct and true. Consistency doesn't even matter. They do not and at this point even psychologically *cannot* apply a consistent standard to assess things. It's not that they know they're wrong and the lie about the evidence.
These folk are so much more problematic than simple liars.

Likewise removing supply by starting a war increases prices.

Part of the problem is that Dems for 30 years have completely given up actually competing in most of the country so the senate is all but an impossibility for them to win to the degree they honestly need to win it by. But they do have a shot this cycle not a great show but a chance and if they do get close I wonder if that wakes some of these crypt keepers up to remember there was a time where Congress was under Democrats control for half a century without fail. They also tend to forget that said period of dominance was when the Dems were actually a working class party and their inability to regularly win elections just so happen to coincide with the party shifting to being a corporate party like the Republicans.

>On Wednesday, the average cost for a gallon of gas was $4.06
Wow that's \~1 € per liter on average. Being a European, realizing that this is considered a very high price in the USA, makes me partly understand why American cars are so big and consume so much.
1
noxiconApr 1, 2026
+1
The issue is we don't have public transit. We can't take a train somewhere. Your countries have also realized the err of runaway emissions. The average fuel efficiency of a car in Europe is twice that in America. The average European drives 6700 miles a year. The average American drives 13,500 miles per year. So not only are your cars twice as efficient, they are used half as much.
If gas prices skyrocket, we don't have any options to not pay that. It is an accepted part of our reality.
1
ratedsarApr 1, 2026
+1
We also haven't raised federal fuel taxes to accurately reflect spending, so actively use debt to fuel maintenance.
Much of the inflation felt from 2022 is also likely correlated to red states raising their gas taxes in 2019 (after mid terms) but delaying them until the increase during Covid.

In the middle of covid times , I needed a new car. I could not find a new or used car. I had to get on waiting lists to even see a car because dealerships were not getting anything in stock. Then when you got called in to see a car, it either sold before you got there or they were marking it up an absurd amount. The summer of 2022 Chevy was trying to clear out their Bolts, battery issues and they would replace it for you, but it was also a wait. I got called in to see a Bolt, I took the appointment, had not even considered an electric car. They were not marking it up, they had just replaced the battery on that one and I bought it and got money towards an at home charger. It's great, best car I've ever had and now I don't even think about gas. It's great for around town and work and I took it on a trip with no problems.
