It’s relevant because Trump is doing this as an executive order (again breaking the law ironically bc there is no budget for them hence the shutdown hence the lack of pay in the first place), but he’s doing it because he knows with a unanimous senate vote to pay them without any concessions for the SAVE act or further funding for ICE, it’s only a matter of time before a veto proof bill hits his desk. So he’s trying to get in front of it.
Basically just like with the Epstein bill, although the optics are even harder to avoid this time with the airport chaos, so they’ll get paid. Especially since he won’t take any political damage for paying them.
Basically another TACO, as he previously stated he wouldn’t budge unless the SAVE act was also passed.
And yes there was no reason for any of this. It's basically the same deal the dems offered them before the shutdown even began.
edit: a couple words

Pros and cons here. Obvious pro that TSA is getting paid, although I do generally think they're pretty much useless, they were total victims of this political fight.
Big con though, democrats no longer have any funding leverage to get ICE reforms. ICE and CBP have plenty of funding already. And now Republicans can just wait until the next reconciliation bill and pass whatever funding they want.
Good that TSA is getting paid, but this is the end of the chances of real ICE reform for the next year at least. Next shot they'll have now is if the Democrats take the House in the midterms, but my guess is that the GOP knows this is likely and will pass a massive amount of funding for DHS in the next reconciliation bill to future proof democrats taking away funding in 2027+.

Long term,
1. TSA needs to go away, it was always a poorly thought out band-aid to adapt to the early 2000's and never really got sorted out correctly. Security still needs to be dealt with, but whatever our airports does now is 90% bullshit and ain't working. flying through EU airports was an eyeopener. We suck.
2. The whole 'imma hold regular people's salaries hostage if i don't get my way', way of passing budgets *also* needs to go away. It's interesting that exactly 20 seconds after Delta closed their special access lines for congressional reps, there was suddenly movement on a deal. Hence i propose: if there's no budget, *f******* ***congress*** *doesn't get paid, but* ***all other government workers get paid and all agencies remain open at prior year levels.***
3. Re: ICE reforms - maybe, but this shit has gone on too long and is verging on "shoot self in foot a second time"-levels of stupidity. With trump caving on the SAVE act and the senate caving in general, this is probably as good as its gonna get without having it backfire and make it look like the democrats are now the ones f****** people over. We don't need that. Anyway there will be ICE reform. it just may not happen until January 2027. [The GOP is in deep shit. ](https://apnews.com/article/democrat-emily-gregory-florida-legislative-seat-maralago-899016be8e87645f7776fa0cca94e1bc)
This shit is ridiculous.

That Delta change had nothing to do with the sudden urgency to get some resolution.
It had to do with 2 things, first, last weekend was the first time the lines were so bad they got massive national media coverage, and second, congress has a 2 week vacation planned starting this weekend, which was being threatened by leadership if there was no agreement in place.
While I agree that it sucks for people who are working not to get paid, the fix can't be that Congress doesn't get paid. Because that means rich people in Congress get to hold out as long as they want. I don't know what the fix is, but that isn't it.

maybe it did, maybe it didn't. *but* delta mostly serves red states and *the timing sure was suspicious.*
just sayin'
i'm sure the vacation threat also helped.

TACO Tuesday is every day of the week! (And thank goodness... where would we be if he never caved?)

Actually... probably better off.
The taco trade is only effective because of the concurrent "flood the zone" strategy, paired with only making excessive demands. If something's taking too long to proceed, just come back to it later and exhaust everyone for now with other stuff.
Keep 5-10 ongoing battles, replace one every week, and for each new battle, make outrageous demands that are 3x more greedy than what you really want, then pretend to compromise and call it good business. Rinse and repeat.

Senate already passed. Up to the House now, he just wants credit. Thune called him and told him minutes before he announced the EO that again ignores the power of the purse.
He's a dictator.

Does Trump actually have the authority to do this, and has not been exercising that authority, or is this taking advantage of an emergency he created to make a power grab?

IcyknightmareMar 27, 2026

I believe it's technically illegal to do it with an EO, but it's not like anybody in Washington is going to seriously object.

It's not actually legal. These funds weren't allocated for paying the TSA, and the president doesn't just get to take money Congress allocates for one thing and use it on another.
At least theoretically, the laws don't really seem to apply at the moment, but I'm sure they'll be fully enforced when a Democrat is president again.

Well, you could say:
"Government leader orders government to pay government workers who were doing government work unpaid for months because the same government leader earlier refused to pay those same government workers to do that same government work", but it's less snappy.

What I’m getting at is, I know Trump previously told Congressional Republicans not to authorize TSA pay. It doesn’t sound like he is now telling them to authorize it. It sounds like he is asserting executive power that he is not supposed to have.

Then a Republican lawmaker did what Democrats have been asking for all along, introduced a bill solely for paying TSA workers, not linked to ICE and not linked to Trump depriving married women of voting rights (the SAVE Act), which Trump had been demanding.

I bet none of the weirdos have figured out yet that if he can do this now, he couldve done it in the beginning, which means he simply chose not to pay them in the first place.

The real problem isn't that this is an illegal and unconstitutional executive order. The problem is that there are thousands of people who will simply cut those checks and disperse that money even though it is illegal, just because he said so. That's what keeps making it possible for him to continue issuing illegal and unconstitutional executive orders.
I'm not saying that I don't want the TSA agents to get paid. I'm saying that they need to get paid via legal means.

I thought Leon had this covered?
Meanwhile, republicans refused a separate bill to pay them and look who swoops in to save the day! I wish my job congratulated me on fixing things that I fucked up in the first place.
