I'm just going to go ahead and mark down the spot on my bingo card now for seeing clips of Trump administration officials trying to downplay skyrocketing gas prices while we see footage of burning oil fields in the background

They already trotted out the talking point of "short term pain for long term gain" as if that's going to soothe $5 to $8/gal gas in the States which will if course trickle down to everything that is shipped.

Then once it hits 8 he'll take credit for bringing it down to 6! Art of the deal baby!/s

If A&W's 1/3rd-pound burger failed to sell due to people misunderstanding fractions 40 years ago, then your example probably has the highest chance of fooling a lot of people.

Biden never saw $6 during his presidency! Too big of a p**** to make you all hurt so good! #winning

Trumps MO has always been, buy it, milk it, break it, claim bankruptcy and walk away. Only difference this time around is that he’s doing it to the US dollar. 💵 My bingo card says that the US defaults on debt payments before midterms, then Renminbi takes over as the trusted fiat currency.

They took a play out of Iraq's playbook as they retreated out of Kuwait. Though, Iran's retaliation will be extra spicy. I think more Americans need to see the actual size of Iran relative to the US, area-wise: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/2009_Iran_and_eastern_United_States_size_comparison_by_the_CIA.png
41
Jeremizzle Mar 30, 2026 +31
[This map](https://imgur.com/a/y8Gr6pB) is nice too, it really shows how large Iran is compared to Iraq and Afghanistan, the last major wars we were stuck in. We were fighting the Afghans for like 20 years and they’re half the size of Iran. Far less wealthy too. And we still lost that war in the end. Iran has more people, more tech (see the drones they send to Russia), they control a major world shipping lane, they support armed militias in multiple countries that function as proxies (hamas, hezbollah, houthis). Trump and Hegseth have really opened up a can of worms here that could lead to a world of hurt for the US. It’s already started economically with the huge increase in gas prices.
31
gmen6981 Mar 30, 2026 +6
And speaking of their proxies, although they have been quiet so far, just wait until the Houthis in Yemen jump in the fray and start to disrupt shipping through the Bab-el-Mandeb Straight, which is just as important to oil shipping from the Red Sea as the Straight of Hormuz is to the Persian Gulf. While ships can use the Suez Canal to exit the Red Sea into the Mediterranean, anything that was headed to the Gulf of Aden and beyond just added a trip all the way around Africa to it's journey. Edit: Speaking of the Houthis, I just read that they HAVE entered the conflict. They've launch several missile attacks towards Israel.
6

And we won't hear about it, because the Trump administration will hide that info as well.

$10 - $12 in AUD per gallon at the current price. That could climb as high as $25 a gallon of he keeps pushing the Iranians.

It’s almost like the international rules based order was good for everyone. Honestly why the USA needs to ruin the world for the rest of us is unforgivable. For the second year in a row I’m not hiring some more help and planning on keeping on being burnt out because of the USA exporting uncertainties all over the world.

You know Iran has already mined the c*** out of it and planted IEDs. In addition to being able to hit it with drones and missiles they can reach it with conventional artillery. They are crazy enough to burn the whole island down. Dumb Donny who only thinks in dollars is counting they wouldn’t do it. Iran says “hold my beer “.
16
ItsABiscuit Mar 30, 2026 +15
Dump when he learns that religious extremists may not be interested in a making a corrupt deal for mutual enrichment, especially after he killed their supreme leader’s father and wife: 😱😱😱
15
M_Mich Mar 30, 2026 +10
It’s not crazy. It’s denying the enemy a strategic asset. Scorched earth and salt the farmland go back to the first camp vs camp fight of the first humans. They know Trump wants the oil, if they can’t keep ownership they’ll deny it to Trump and strike the neighbor states that are allowing us bases and staging. They know the only way to stop Trump is by making the rich rein him in. Maersk and shipping companies start losing ships in the strait and they’ll pressure governments to do something. And if they don’t run the risk, the economic hit to the world from Iran tolls on the strait or material shipments not moving will pressure the rich to make other countries cut deals or make Trump cut a deal. I think we are in agreement on the goals but Iran isn’t crazy their move have been more strategic than anything Trump and Pete ordered

I saw it today in my rural-ish town in SW Pennsylvania at 4.15/gal unleaded. Cannot remember the last time it was ever that high. Truly insane. Edit: My bad, just passed that gas station about 5 minutes ago again and it was at $4.29 and not $4.15. And that is for 88/Unleaded.

EmbarrassedW33B Mar 30, 2026 +54

Absolutely. I’m most definitely in a Trumpy area, too. Enjoy, folks. I’ll keep charging my EV for free at my house.
33
Ranger7381 Mar 30, 2026 +10
Not sure about where you are, but around here a few years ago they started changing prices through the day instead of just at midnight It TENDS to drop as the day goes on so at the same station it will be cheaper to fill up in the evening rather than first thing in the morning but that is by no means guaranteed. Also still happens on weekends even if the “projected change” was for no change
10
runs_with_airplanes Mar 30, 2026 +27
$4.99/gal here in Phoenix, fun times 😒
27
Ill_Ground_1572 Mar 30, 2026 +111
If you think that's fun, go spend some time on the UAE sub where every 5 minutes a new post shows up with people reporting explosions all around them. And how terrified they are being unable to sleep, distract their kids, worrying if their power is hit. Couldn't imagine being a citizen in Iran. This is totally unnecessary bullshit war and it's always the regular people who pay the price. High gas prices is f*** all.

NoKids__3Money Mar 30, 2026 +58
Republicans are always graded on a curve and given as much benefit of the doubt as possible. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, that caused a disruption of 1 million barrels of crude per day. In response, crude futures immediately spiked to $140 / barrel. Gas shot up to $5+ / gallon almost immediately. Voters blamed it on Biden when he had little to no control over the situation. Now that a Republican is in office, who unilaterally CAUSED the disruption, 10 million barrels per day are displaced (10x the Russia/Ukraine 2022 disruption) and somehow crude futures barely crack $110 and the entire world is pulling out every stop possible to try to soften the blow so Trump's blunder doesn't blow up in his face. Releasing every petroleum emergency reserve possible. Lifting sanctions on Russia and Iran (yes, who we're at war with, lol). Japan is engaging in an extremely risky strategy of shorting crude futures just to keep the price down, almost every big bank and financial "expert" is downplaying the seriousness of the disruption. Oh and did I mention that Ukraine blew up Russian refineries earlier in 2026 which have already resulted in a disruption of 2 million barrels / day - that alone is 2x the 2022 disruption. So it's actually 12x the 2022 disruption, with no end in sight, and somehow crude oil is being kept well below the 2022 peak.
58
Neat_Key_6029 Mar 30, 2026 +12
The world is fucked, isn’t it? We are waiting for the little tricks to manipulate the price to run out of steam?

It's not just Trump the mainstream news media wouldn't shut up about inflation when Biden was in office (Which wasn't his fault it was Covid) however now the rising gas prices are only a blip in the media.

“To do evil a human being must first of all believe that what he’s doing is good.” —Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn “If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds… and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” —Solzhenitsyn “This new type of criminal… commits his crimes under circumstances that make it well-nigh impossible for him to know or feel that he is doing wrong.” —Hannah Arendt “The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.” —Arendt

Its incredible to think about what the world could be like without Conservatives. Try to imagine a human society where there aren't religious and/or uneducated people standing in the way of proper healthcare for everyone, people who try to push fairy tales to replace science, people who try to strip women of their most basic bodily rights, people who prioritize hate over logic, people who dismiss and even encourage the damage we do to our one and only habitable planet, people who are scared of an equal society where everyone is treated **equally**. Its so fucked up to think about just how much pain and suffering Conservatives have inflicted on hundreds of millions of people all over the world just because they're scared of progress and equality and a better life for everyone. We could be in a near utopia, but because about 50% of people who rather see everyone, including their own families, suffer instead of allowing certain groups of people to get the help they need, this is where we are. Right wing ideologies are the biggest plague the human race could ever infect ourselves with. Its just so crazy to imagine where we could be as a society without them. Conservatives are the biggest barrier to the best human society we could be.

I disagree. It’s plain greed. Some of the things they are doing are dumb as nails, other things are quite smart, but it’s all greed and grifting. Trump also is amazingly racist for a public figure, and clearly very insecure and hateful. But that’s more Trump himself (and probably why he’s so popular with Maga). What’s clear is nothing he’s doing helps the general American public and everything has a massive upside for him personally… or it fulfills his personal hateful agenda… I mean the president of the United States trolls Rosie O’Donnell, that’s not the most petty spiteful thing he’s done, but it blows my mind.
61

28

I will admit running bribes through crypto and then conflating polybets, AI, and block chain as one giant thing that can’t be regulated at all is extremely smart. The level of ambiguity around hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes/predictions is a level of corruption we have never seen in the United States. Estimates are that the trump crime family has raked in between 1-5 billion in a year (a range in the billions!!!) is astronomical.

Ok so they take the island... Then what? Iran stops oil from the mainland going to the island. So the marines are sitting on a island within missile range that's got no oil. I get it limits iran oil revenues as its a major hub. But would this not push the price of oil futher up?
877

The reason you are struggling to find any good responses is because there are none. This is why presidents have avoided this conflict for decades. We are trapped in the escalation trap. Nothing is certain and it’s all probabilistic, but none of the choices have a high probability of leading to good outcomes. Everything the U.S. does leads to more escalation and chaos.

33
Brave-Dragonfly3798 Mar 30, 2026 +19
Sad truth right here. Any attack on Kharg is almost certainly going to result in the 30 million barrels of oil going up in flames and rendering the entire gulf a toxic dead zone. No water for 65 million people, no ships flowing at all for months and a global economic meltdown. This administration has zero capacity to forward project cause and effect.
19
DokMabuseIsIn Mar 30, 2026 +27

31

That'll be the least of our worries. The fragile supply chains that supply us with damn near everything essential for basic life functions will start to break down. It will simply be too expensive to run so many trucks. You can ride your bike to the grocery store but there will be f*** all there to buy
34
Monkey1Fball Mar 30, 2026 +57
The island also has 10,000 or so people living on it full-time. What's the plan for *them*? Our marines would be subject to some sort of guerilla warfare from them too (in addition to all the possible missiles from the mainland).
57
EmbarrassedW33B Mar 30, 2026 +59
Oh I wouldn't worry, the US has a history of always treating civilians well after all. Our troops have never gone on murderous rampage or carried out collective punishments on innocents. Nope, our boys would never. It'll all be great
59
AmIFromA Mar 30, 2026 +6

21
EmbarrassedW33B Mar 30, 2026 +28
Its even worse when you consider that with Hegseth in charge there's a non-zero chance he just orders them massacred if they're perceived as resisting the US forces at all.
28
speganomad Mar 30, 2026 +11
It’s a big leap to assume guerrilla warfare from unarmed civilians living in a pretty nice area. Some definitely might but not in enough numbers for it to be a major issue overall imo. The bigger issue is drone attacks from the mainland.
11
lukeyellow Mar 30, 2026 +6
It will but they stupidly backed themselves into a corner. Trump and Co. Thought it would be a repeat of Venezuela. (I imagine Bibi probably said so too.) And they went in without much of a plan. And since Trump thinks like a dictator and tyrant he can back down or admit defeat as to do so would be *weak* so he has to keep digging in. Honestly, best case scenario I see for him is taking the islands and then using that as a bargaining chip to try to back out with a *peace with honor* garbage. But also I wouldn't be surprised come midterms he's still acting like we'll win in a week.
6
ynotfoster Mar 30, 2026 +14
But are people talking about the Epstein files as much?
14
Odd-Eggplant-6681 Mar 30, 2026 +23
The island is the home to the only port that export around 90% of Iranian oil to the world market. Taking over that port means cutting off its oil exports to the world, meaning Iran effectively lost the very key thing that kept its economy running during war. What that means for us common plebs, however, is that gas price are about to hit $8.
23
Impossible-Flight250 Mar 30, 2026 +11
That’s true, but I think Iran will probably just decide to blow up oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and Qatar at that point and plunge the entire world into a recession.

On the afternoon of January 6, 2021, ***somebody*** obviously got to Trump and told him what's up. He released that video and he actually shut the hell up for the 2 weeks afterwards (seriously, you didn't hear much from him) until Biden became President. Where the heck are those people this time?
47
HobbesNJ Mar 30, 2026 +88
He literally got rid of any sane or competent advisors in his entire administration. He hates that some of those people resisted his worst impulses and directives the first time, so he made sure there wasn't a single soul with integrity or a backbone this time around. It's bootlickers and toadies, all the way down.

Successful_Gas_5122 Mar 30, 2026 +37
They resigned or got fired, because Dear Leader must be praised at all times. He recently said that he prefers hanging out with "losers" because successful people make him feel inadequate. "Losers" are exactly who Trump's surrounded himself with this time around. Kash Patel, Kristi Noem, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth; it's a veritable f****** clown car.

First we heard that American military action was necessary to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. That may or may not have been true because they had claimed to have completely obliterated Iran's nuclear weapons facilities. Now we hear that there is another motive, an old one. The US wants more oil. This is certainly believable after they arrested Maduro and then made it about oil not drugs. Wealth and military power are the only things that motivate the US today. The rest of the world has to suffer while their Congress and judiciary watch and do nothing.
133
Upgrades_ Mar 30, 2026 +47
Trump wants money. He doesn't give a shit if it's from oil or whatever. The US doesn't want this, Trump and Israel do.
47
sask357 Mar 30, 2026 +59
The US elected Trump. The US elected their representatives in Congress who do nothing to stop him. The US government represents the people who elected it. Yes, the US wants this. There are some dissenters but they lack the power or influence to do anything about it.
59
chinaPresidentPooh Mar 30, 2026 +21
Yeah about 2/3 of the US voters either actively want this or don't care that this is happening. Saying that the US doesn't want this is just trying to hide from the fact that Trump is only in power because the people voted him in or were ok with him winning.
21
Sad_Prawn2864 Mar 30, 2026 +20
The US voted for this, you guys absolutely want this, don't wash your hands now. The US has been like this for decades it did not just started with trump and you continue to do nothing about it. so yes this shit is absolutely on the American public.

150
mmarkklar Mar 30, 2026 +26
He also does it because he’s delegated out his foreign policy to the tiny men with tiny feet who he put in big shoes… Hegseth, Rubio, and Lindsay Graham are all huge war hawks who have been dreaming of seeing Iran in flames. These fuckers literally see this as a crusade and Trump lets them do it because he doesn’t actually give a shit.

You think Trump knows what a pipe is? He is going to take the island at the cost of many American soldiers lives. If I was Iran that island would be a deathtrap by now. They have had weeks to prepare for an invasion.

Lindsey Graham went on national television and said it would be like iwo jima. Lets ignore the casualty rates. Iwo was one of the few times they allowed an uncontested invasion, precisely because, japan knew they needed to lure them in to pre set mortar fire and concentrated machine guns. This is gonna be so bad when marines get left to die and iran posts videos like in ukraine.
14
Old_Ladies Mar 30, 2026 +6
Yeah I don't think any military is prepared for drone warfare. I don't know if Iran has a lot of FPV drones but if they do it isn't going to end well. Like the US can take the island but it will take many casualties.

54
ohiotechie Mar 30, 2026 +18
Strictly on a financial level it would have been cheaper just to buy that oil, and that doesn’t take into consideration the 1000s, possibly 100s of 1000s that died.
18
Captain_North Mar 30, 2026 +12
The conservative estimate for Iraqi casualties from both gulf wars is around 500.000, of which 85% were civilians, the total excess deaths are estimated to be around one million.
12
Xero_id Mar 30, 2026 +28
Gas prices might force companies to give work from home again as people can't afford to drive to work. This will probably push sales of electric cars also which will be a huge blow to Trump and his oil buddy's that keep donating to him.
28
Broken_Reality Mar 30, 2026 +27
All Trump thinks about is taking the oil. Venezuela ..oil. Iran...oil. Constantly talks about how the US drills the most oil. At the same time he stops green energy programs at every chance. Mostly because most of the people funding him or paying him off are all oil based and not green based.

Then yeah all sorts of weird shit goes through their brains. Sometimes violent when they think you are a Japanese POW camp guard and not a teenager doing a shit job (that could sometimes be very rewarding when you make someone have a better day). Mental illness is not a laughing matter really nor is dementia except when it happens to Trump who deserves every piece of shit that gets thrown at him.

Everything Iran has done is 100% rational. They are only acting in direct response with equal force, largely, and I don't know how you expect a nation to otherwise act when you're repeatedly saying you want to wipe the country out completely. I think the only thing that stops this absolute stupidity from Trump is like literally the entire world making him stop with the threat of combined military action by all of them if he doesn't or widespread revolt / abdication or duty within the military.
57
DrSixSmith Mar 30, 2026 +12
Iran’s military decision makers, from the top to the rank and file, have been expecting and _waiting for_ exactly this scenario since before many of them were born. Westerners who thought “I never imagined they could be this stupid! Well, at least there’s the element of surprise,” well, no. Iran always thought we were that stupid, it was just a question of when.

That's what this war has come down to now? After all the rhetoric of liberating the Iranian people, toppling the regime, and preventing nuclear arms in Iran, now were down to the US just attempting armed robbery of oil?
9
seejsee Mar 30, 2026 +8
Those around Trump must have convinced him to take over as much of the world’s oil as much as they can, before he goes to Beijing. The plan may have been to barter oil rights for rare earths. They carried out the plan somewhat successfully with Venezuela. But Iran never got the script.

Stating the obvious like anybody would be surprise or feign any kind of expectation that its just a threat and wont actually be acted upon. We already invaded one country for oil this year and we're neck-deep into this one, if Trump talks oil then that's his goal no matter the outcome of what anybody does.
