Here is some background: DHS is required to protect FIFA World Cup from a number of threats (terrorism, chem / bio / radiological / nuke, drone, etc). It takes years to prepare for an event this massive. In 2024, they were already in full swing for getting ready for FIFA 2026. Then Jan 2025, DOGE came and fired every single GS15 and a huge chunk of the rest. Entire departments were cut. Everything came to a halt. There was 1) no leadership 2) no institutional knowledge 3) nobody who had the power to execute 4) fear. To make matters worse, all contracting decisions went straight to Secretary, Kristi Noem. So she had like 7,000 contracting actions to do and was responsible for approving all of them. There were very few approvals, and most of them were extremely self motivated (luxury jets, etc). So there was no money for executing any of the missions. Okay so 9 or so months later, the various politicals ('politicals' = DHS employees that were politically appointed) were like, holy shit, we've run out of time. Let's put billions of dollars (literally!) into standing up these FIFA defensive capabilities. So they put out billions in procurement requests. The admin had starved the contracting world for a year, so each procurement received thousands of responses, which bogged them down for months. And now DHS is shutdown, so procurements are delayed even longer. And FIFA starts in like 3 months. Okay if all that wasn't enough, DHS politicals drastically reorganized the entire department. Nobody knows what they're doing; half the leaders are sorta in handshake positions. Existing employees aren't fired, but they'll have to re-apply for positions. To rephrase that: if your job is to protect Americans at World Cup from Biological weapons, you have been reorganized and have to re-apply to your position of protecting Americans from Biological weapons. It's a mess, and it was an absolutely avoidable mess. The Trump politicals had to go out of their way to create this mess in a manner that was so myopically stupid that no rational human could conceive it...yet they pulled it off.

Because they hope FIFA events get attacked by terrorists so that they can fully seize and consolidate power for themselves. Cancel the elections due to terror activity (not really possible, but they'll try), or hope the terrorist attacks favor Repubs, which they always have.

I get your sentiment--and this is likely the case with the FBI firing the Iranian counter terror desk--with DHS, it's just incompetence. There's nothing more than a complete lack of understanding of how anything works. Political believed their own propaganda of how easy it is to run a complex government, and reality bulldozed them

I don’t know why any fan would go. There’s the matter of ICE of course, and the crazy prices, and the fact that some teams might not even be able to get visas, but even if you have no issues with that, the lack of planning means there’s going to be utter chaos at every game.  For some of the friendlies that took place in the US last week, people queued for hours yet couldn’t get into the stadium before kickoff. Staff didn’t seem to care. People are going to pay thousands on tickets, then spend hours waiting in line in scalding heat, just to be told that they can’t get in in time. Good luck managing angry crowds at every game. This is going to make the US look terrible (deservedly). Time for Mexico and Canada to shine!
