We really need to have a collective shift from “Trump is an incompetent buffoon cartoon villain” to “Trump and Republicans are malevolent and evil, their sole aim is to do whatever will hurt American society and our standing in the world the most.”
Collectively viewing Trump and Republicans as incompetent buffoons has not served us well over the past decade, and it’s wrong because it pre-supposes that they set out to do good things and fail.
Viewing them as bad people who are intent on doing us harm, on the other hand, makes perfect sense and explains everything. Whether it’s on behalf of foreign actors or their own desire to wreck the country and our standing in the world (by doing things like this), it makes sense, and you can’t deny they’ve been wildly successful at it.

There’s a phrase for this and it’s called Murc’s Law.
Basically democrats constantly get shit on for fumbles but everyone just inherently expects republicans to act shitty so they just let it slide.

While I do know that they're buffoons, they are a serious and very real threat. They must be removed from power ASAP!

I read that you need a two thirds senate majority to pull the US out of NATO, or a legislation.

He may not have the legal means but he can erode trust to a point it'll be a de facto discontinuation. I can't believe I'm saying this but we have to put our hopes in the military industrial complex and their unimaginable urge to make line go up.

Congress can, he cannot
>In 2023, Congress enacted a law that prohibits the President from "suspend[ing], terminat[ing], denounc[ing], or withdraw[ing] the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty"—which established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)—without the advice and consent of the Senate or an act of Congress. See Section 1250A of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, Pub. L. No. 118-31. This provision emerged against the backdrop of debates concerning the United States' policy toward NATO and whether the President possesses the power to withdraw the United States from treaties without receiving the legislative branch's approval.

That‘s right, but do we know, if he will respect this law, after all, he has been doing in the past, is doing in the present and probably will do in future?
1
sharpknotApr 1, 2026

Exactly. He's gonna do it similar to the way he did tariffs. Just run it first, then take time in courts fighting it. Eventually the order will be overturned and the consequences will be so bad it doesn't matter the legitimacy of the order.

I don’t think it matters at this point. His rhetoric has already done that but also public opinion in the US is clearly very anti-war at the moment, both on left and right as seen by the response to Iran and turning on Israel. Currently the Magnificent 7 would ride into your village, get drunk and burn down the saloon and then ride off when the bandits show up because they don’t fancy fighting after all and have a pressing card game to attend.

He can't without changing laws, but he can certainly impede actions to produce effectively almost the same result. Which is probably good enough in his (and Putin's) book.

Doesn't matter. If he says 'we aren't coming to help if Europe is attacked' that's effectively the end of NATO and he can say that without Congress

my conspiracy brain is telling me this is an agreement with russia behind europes back to get russia to stop propping up iran. i know leaving nato has been a long term trump talking point and this is likely just a common bluster tactic he uses but i don't put anything past him.

It would be quite stupid.
He has also made the same threat a few times with different terms. His first term threatened to relocate American troops stationed in Europe; He threatened to not defend NATO if attacked; He "jokingly" encouraged [Russia] to attack; and I think there were a couple others.
Each time was to get something: Europe to increase defense spending, or increase some sort of spending that would replace US investment.
I'd almost guarantee this is just his way of trying to make Europe help secure Hormuz...as per his previous threats all being for short term transactional purposes.

Imaginary-Ad-7919Apr 1, 2026

It has reached the point in Europe where he’s become a laughingstock, and you can’t trust anything Trump says anymore.
1
Yorks_RiderApr 1, 2026

The problem is that it will be impossible to secure Hormuz by military means, if Iran goes for Guerilla warfare and everyone and his dog knows this, but not Trump. There has to be an agreement reached with Iran regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz and Iran has more leverage now than before.

These are just sound bites.
"Absolutely considering", doesn't mean going for it. Doesn't even mean wanting to go for it doesn't even mean that you are positive about the idea.
It just says that it is one of the options you are considering. It is in fact a neutral and objective statement.
It's his way of rattling the cage. + checking the response.

NATO is the US. There's no point without us in it. It was part of our soft-power capabilities to spread influence. That's the whole point. A way to keep EU nations under the thumb of the US. Pulling us out will just force the EU further from the US which great for the EU, bad for the US.
1
Link50LApr 1, 2026
+1
As per NATO's first secretary general, the intent of NATO was to *"Keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down".*
Things have changed but it's still about soft power. I agree that it would be bad for the USA and good for Europe and I personally think it would also be good for Canada. We are far too highly integrated into the American military.
