I’d argue the reason was to raise North Korea’s status from a country that is seen as backwards to a place taken seriously on the global stage. Meeting with the American president at all means you were taken seriously, more so when you cause the American president to travel for the meeting. You are correct the pinnacle of this is having the American leader visit your nation, which they did achieve, but that wasn’t necessary for the mission they were trying to achieve. North Korea wanted those meetings so they could look like more than a Chinese and Russian vassal, but instead as a country which determines its own fate. I’m sure they also hoped direct talks could cause Trump to do something rash, like dropping sanctions as well.
