Trump says Iran ceasefire proposal 'significant' but 'not good enough' as Hormuz Strait deadline nears
The 45-day ceasefire proposal, which could lead to an end to the war, is reportedly being discussed by the U.S., Iran and a group of regional mediators.

Believe so. It's hard to see how if Iran had agreed to opening the strait that Trump wouldn't have taken it though. Iran has him by the balls at the moment because as out gunned as they are there's little Trump can do to open it.
61
smashtheguitar 4 days ago +15
He has to pretend that he's shaking them down for an unfair deal, though, in order to try and salvage anything to try and justify this mess. Even if nothing changes with the proposal, he has a deep need to at least pretend he came out as the w***** in this.

It’s like having a mediator. It’s pretty common for conflict disputes.

I really couldn’t comment on pakistans specific involvement. But my point is it’s incredibly common for peace proposals to be made by a country that isn’t a party to the conflict. You could probably think of at least a half dozen examples off the top of your head.
5
Heffe3737 4 days ago +3
Particularly when there's a lack of trust between the nations at war. Like say, if one side has a habit of breaking agreements or bombing the other during negotiations.
3
Ludwigofthepotatoppl 4 days ago +7
It’s not unusual for a third country to serve as a mediator. But pakistan…
7
WholeEgg3182 4 days ago +6
Well there's not a whole bunch of countries that both would potentially accept as a mediator.
6
Nervous_Chemical7566 4 days ago +3
What? The whole point of using a third party is to mediate the negotiations at arms length as an outside party. This is not same as the content that is included in the proposal. It is the responsibility of the mediator to understand the grievances, issues, conditions, etc. of the two parties and prepare a proposal for negotiation.

Remember. Trump is like a dog. Yesterday never happened. Tomorrow isn’t real. Your dog lives that way too. Dog doesn’t care about your walk yesterday or a promise to go tomorrow. It knows a walk this instant. No issue with dogs but they can’t run a country. They react to each moment.

I don't understand how anything Trump says moves the markets when he says just about nothing but lies.
66
TheCrisco 4 days ago +23
Because, lies or not, he has the power to do big things that could heavily impact the market, and he has an unshakeable base in the tens of millions just begging to devour this shit when he takes a dump on the plate in front of them. Reality is irrelevant to them, whatever he says goes, and he knows it. So, he says outlandish shit, his followers believe it, and presto: his inner circle makes a killing.

The markets is like a dozen people using algorithms and our captured media/government to rip off institutional investors
10
flirtmcdudes 4 days ago +9
The market doesn’t actually care about believing him or not, they are just gambling on what he’ll likely do and how it affects their money. Taco etc
9
Optimoprimo 4 days ago +1
Investment is very detached from reality, thats why the market is so irrational and hard to predict. But its because investors and investment algorithms aren't trying to predict what will happen in the real world. They're trying to predict *what other investors will do in reaction to each piece of news.* So even though everyone knows what he says will not come to fruition, he is enough of an influencer to give investors reasonable justification that other investors may act on his words, and so the cohort of investors all act in parallel.

TheCrisco 4 days ago +129
Yes, yes, and then sometime either later today or tomorrow morning, there'll be another announcement about some huge development along the lines of "they came to me - tears in their eyes - they came to me saying 'please mr hugecock' - that's what they call me, because of my huge c*** - they say please mr hugecock, stop bombing us back into the stone ages, and I was generous enough - perhaps the most generous thing, more generous than anyone's ever seen before - to tell them they could have another few days." I'm sure I missed at least one instance of self-fellation in there, but you get the jist.

So Trump is saying no today to the ceasefire proposal but what about TACO Tuesday? Will he say yes? Will he bomb Iranian energy plants as he threatens? Or will he TACO and give Iran a 48 hour or two week deadline before he says he will do something war crime like to Iran?

Iran's five conditions: stop bombing us, stop bombing our allies, guarantee it won't start again, pay for the damage, and recognise that the Strait is ours.
19
throwaway277252 4 days ago +10
> pay for the damage, and recognise that the Strait is ours Well at least those two conditions are non-starters, so this proposal isn't going anywhere.
10
fuckin_atodaso 4 days ago +5
Even though neither Iran or US is a signatory, Iran "owning" the strait goes against what UNCLOS was drawn up for and it would be against almost the entire international communities stance on the use of international waters. It would be an extremely bad precedent as this isn't the only strait where this could be applied. No one in the world is going to accept this, let alone the wounded egos of the morons in the Trump administration.
5
Fair_Horror 4 days ago +1
They probably should be careful not to give Trump ideas. I can see Trump deciding that peace will require Iran to pay back US for costs incurred in attacking Iran.
1
TotalNonsense0 4 days ago
I see no real reason to dispute them. We started it. We should pay for it. And the strait has functionally been theirs for a long time.

1
Aromatic-Teacher-717 4 days ago +9
It absolutely does matter, because the US is losing. In Vietnam the US never lost a single military engagement, and they still lost the war. America doesn't have the will to do what would be necessary to 'win' in Iran. The price in lives and money is just too high.

2
GeeBee72 4 days ago +2
Believe me when I say that Iran will release a statement indicating that they will open the strait. This will drop oil prices (and Iran will be heavily short in the market), then they’ll release a second notice that the first was incomplete, and they’ll reopen the strait when Trump publicly admits that he’s an imbecile and is removed from office.
