It is f****** unfathomable that these words were even uttered. It shows everyone that there is no good faith at play. These people are diabolical and shouldn't be anywhere near power, and they got elected.

The US sunk Iran's blue water Navy. These fast attack boats are speedboats armed with a mix of torpedoes, rockets, machine guns, suicide charges and occasionally anti-ship missiles. More like Ukrainian drone boats, but manned.
13
Halbaras 5 days ago +3
Iran has USVs as well, one of the tankers that was previously attacked in this war was struck by one. Some of the fast attack boats can apparently be operated as drones as well. Part of the reason the US is begging allies to come die for Israel in the strait for them is they're genuinely worried about having warships get damaged. Ukraine crippling the black sea fleet from shore wasn't entirely down to Russian incompetence.
3
RiPPeR69420 5 days ago +2
To be fair, the US Navy learned a hard lesson from the USS Cole and has been actively preparing for Iranian FIACs for years. I'm not discounting the threat, but it's significantly less of a threat to the US Navy because the US Navy is significantly better equipped, better maintained and better trained to deal with this sort of threat. But there aren't too many scenarios where the US doesn't lose a ship or two, though it would probably be LCSs as opposed to Burkes. Which would be acceptable from a military standpoint (as it stands with this idiotic endeavor), but a political disaster.

I can’t understand that Americans read these news letters and don’t do anything about it. In lots of other places they would protest for days but they are too lazy to come out of the couch.
7
No_Gur1113 6 days ago +14
I think we need be fair to Americans for not protesting more ardently/violently. View their lives the way they actually live them, not how they’re portrayed on TV. Many Americans are wage slaves who are one paycheck away from financial disaster. 1/3 would find it difficult to cover an unexpected $400 expense. They pay so much for health insurance and could still end up with a co-pay that may leave them bankrupt. Missing work could actually be life and death for them if they can’t pay for their health insurance and get sick. And last but not least, America has a gun problem not experienced in other parts of the developed world. They have a policing problem. They have an ICE problem. A protest there ≠ a protest in many places. I’m Canadian and I have no issue protesting here, but I’m not too sure I’d be chomping at the bit to protest if I lived in the USA. Too many twitchy fingers on hair triggers.
14
SvedishFish 6 days ago +2
We're not on the couch, we are working, because if you skip work to protest, youll get fired. the iob market is tough so there's no guarantee youll find something comparable. And in America there's mostly no social safety net, so your kids can go hungry. And your health insurance is tied to your job, so you lose medical care too. Need to take your kid to the doctor? Lol without insurance you don't *have* a doctor. If you get arrested while protesting, it can make you un-hirable. The risk to your family is just too much, especially knowing that your protest will accomplish jack shit because no one with power is going to do a damn thing about it anyway. Until there is a real tangible risk to your family that outweighs the risks of protesting - when you can no longer afford to feed your kids, or when they're physically in danger - most people are going to keep their heads down and go to work. Edit: also important to add, there's tons of protests here. There's always someone protesting something, and anti-trump protests regularly. But the idea of protesting for days on end is impossible. There's no way to sustain that momentum when there's no end in sight.

The same bullshit they’ve used forever. Have a family friend, retired navy.  Told me all the time about how when they would pass through the strait Iran would send these ships out.. they’d run em over if they got in the way back then.  They’re hardly special military boats, just some extra stuff on the hulls.. bigger motor and some guns.. boom “fast ship”

Fearless_Push_4227 6 days ago +2
Aren't there 6 thousand of them, and US ships have to stay far away for safe engagement?
2
bradland 6 days ago +3
Yes, there are many of them, and yes, US Navy ships use distance as a part of their defense, but this strategy is not unknown to the US military. In 2002, the US participated in the Millennium Challenge. In that exercise, the US forces were the Blue Team, with the Red Team representing opposing forces. In that exercise, a retired USMC Lt. Gen. Paul Van Riper (yep, that's a real name) used swarm tactics to overwhelm and defeat a US Carrier Battle Group. The Red Team used small, fast-boats laden with explosives simultaneously with cruise missiles. Within a few minutes, the Red Team had sunk 19 ships, including a carrier. The event led to significant controversy, with Van Riper ultimately walking out on the exercise after a forced reset and a change of rules that favored the Blue Team. Pretty much bullshit. However, it's been more than 20 years since then, and fast-boat tactics weren't new at the time Van Riper used them. Fast-boat swarm tactics go way back. Iran bought some of their earliest fast-boats from Sweden in the 1980s. What Van Riper did was demonstrate the clear limit of contemporary AEGIS tracking systems. Those limits are not the same today, but using small, c**** boats to overwhelm billions of dollars worth of advanced naval technology is an S-tier asymmetric warfare strategy. In the intervening years, that exercise was reviewed by the entirety of the US military leadership who weren't so close to the specific exercise, and were therefore more willing to recognize the defeat and the urgent need for counter-measures The USN has added specific counter-measures to their layered defense strategy. Advancements in directed-energy weapons are a major factor in reducing the asymmetry of swarm tactics. Laser and HPM weapons cost very little to fire, because the consumable is primarily energy. They've also developed much lower cost traditional weapons like counter-force drone swarms and interceptors. This helps avoid the problem of using a $4M missile to defeat a $50k threat. Arleigh Burke destroyers now have HELIOS, and smaller boats have ODIN. HPM is still in development, but should be on the water in 2026. Interceptor drones are in active use, and kinetic interceptor drones are mid-rollout. Joint Maritime Operations are also playing a big role. There are a *lot* of A-10 enthusiasts, so you've likely heard about this already, but the Navy is working together with the Air Force to deploy A-10 patrols in the area. The A-10 has a very effective canon onboard, as well as a new laser guided variant of old school rocket pods. This combo provides a relatively inexpensive response to Iranian swarm tactics. It's worth pointing out though that the A-10 cannot operate from a carrier. Without US Air Force bases in the region, we would not have this option. The Trump administration appears to be speed-running a strategy that is very likely to dramatically reduce the number of bases we have around the world. Just f****** brilliant.

If US ships are in range of Iran's air and naval drones I fully expect we'll see US Navy ships get droned before this is over. Good luck stopping near daily or at least weekly coordinated strikes from missiles, mid-to long range drones *and* sea drones all attacking at the same time. If nothing else the US Navy ships blockading the Strait could very quickly run out of defensive munitions.

Freindly reminder of the time the us ran a war game against a simulated iran and got there asses handed so hard by asymmetric suicide speed boats they had to restart the exercises with a bunch of restrictions on red team to make them "fight fair" and guarantee a blue victory. They are scared.

The U.S. Navy is probably in the most danger since the 2nd world war. Modern drones warfare has shown to disproportionately affect naval warships. Nations like Ukraine could force the Russian navy into port with a few groups of drone boats strapped with explosives, imagine what Iran could do if they strapped the explosive power of a shahed drone onto a remote controlled drone boat. This will not end well for our navy. Most navy’s in the world are already outdated. Ours is no different.
