The lack of understanding is precisely it. This is a complex mechanism that neither the ones voting nor the ones they put in charge understand in terms of function or benefit, thus they go about dismantling it without knowing what it does or what its lack will do.
I am reminded of that perennially insightful Sagan quote—
>”I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”
>”The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.”

Jesus, so Sagan clearly was a visionary then as well as an amazing astronomer. He’s described that accurately down to the letter.

GrafZeppelin127Apr 1, 2026

I would say that the only corollary which would further enhance this decades-old quote is that America is being joined by many other countries on this path of decay.
Not to sound conspiratorial, but I believe this erosion of critical faculties is being knowingly exacerbated and taken advantage of by malefactors, though we are ultimately at fault for manufacturing it to begin with. Not just things like content-slop and propaganda algorithms, either. Education in particular is in a dire state, largely driven by a total abandonment of any expectations, failure, or discipline.

*Cui bono?* Who benefits? Just as NIMBYism is driven as much by a desire for ever-increasing property values as by a hatred of change, at the expense of a society too paralyzed to build *anything* anymore, there are also parties both high and low that benefit from destroying education.
Lazy students and entitled, litigious parents benefit from having no real path to failure in the education system. They’re the foot soldiers of the decline, making teachers’ lives a living Hell. But the generals of that dark army are, I would argue, interest groups and political elites across the spectrum that benefit from a propagandized population that lacks the critical thinking skills to meaningfully oppose people who enrich themselves at the expense of society at large, including their own constituents.

Sagan wrote essays using the pseudonym "Mr X" in a Marijuana journal in the 70's. In it he claimed he was a lifelong user and that it was a benefit which enhanced his intellectual and artistic abilities.
He would have been swept up and vilified in the drug craze in the decades following if he was unmasked but what a revelation it would have been had this great scientist shown the world that the war on some drugs echoed the manufactured ignorance being instituted in our collective culture.

Not really.
Half of them really are voting their interests, because their interest in white supremacy or crony capitalism outweighs their interest in good governance. Aryan Front and Peter Theil have that in common.
The other half have fallen for the most important dictum of Fox News - "No matter how bad things are with the Republican, the Democrat would be worse." So long as these people believe that while Trump started an illegal war in Iran and drove their gas prices up, Harris would surely have started World War III and the annihilation of humanity, hey'll stay solidly in the red camp no matter how much they hate any GOP policy, or recognize that policy as hurting them.

Well...nut jobs have been elected in the past. The difference this time is that Congress apparently doesn't care.
Most times a nut job is elected (hell, most presidents that are elected at all) are resisted by at least one branch of government. It's pretty frequent that presidents need to work to even get their own party on board with legislation. It's almost singularly unique that this administration isn't facing any resistance outside of a few courts.

3. Democratic and independent approval for Trump is around 10%. Most people are against him, a portion of those independents also see Democrats equally as bad as Trump and most Republicans believe Kamala would have run a worse government.
4. My Maga family still supports Trump, why. They hate Transgender people. This isn't a joke. Also some Maga lost their job due to Trump and still supports him. Yes, some people in my family drink raw milk. Yes, she almost lost her life and her kid because of it.

Can you imagine the terror in the defense industry right now? Trillions in contracts about to be torn up... God so much winning! Putin and Xi must be just laughing there asses off. Decades of fighting us for control of the world stage and a bunch of stupid morons handed them it all by voting for the pedophile.....three times....
Our economy is going to fail spectacularly.
Our spectacular military power where we can hit anywhere in the world is going to end real fast too when all the NATO countries kick US armed forces out. And all our Allies tell us to pound sand when we want to cross their airspace or land at their bases for refueling or supply.

Isn't that not legal? Did Republicans and Democrats just pass a law before he came in office in order to clarify that that is not legal?

Drumpf’s illegal executive orders went unchallenged in the courts, because he owns the courts.

I think the illegal ones are still percolating through the courts. It definitely appears that the court has a strong bias for him, but the extent of it is going to be unclear until they start making more final rulings this year.

The US is what it is because of the influence it has in the world. Once the US withdraws from this influence, someone else will fill that place and then it will be very difficult to get it back, if ever.

Don't do articles ridiculing him from leaving. If he sends in ground troops that's a worldwide recession.
This is probably just more stock market manipulation though. He can increase his stolen billions quite easily doing this.
Write articles about how he CAN'T leave. Yes, it presents other problems.

Quite a frightening thought, but if the US leave NATO he could use the US armed forces to take over any country he fancies , or team up with Putler. It's not beyond the realms of possibility, he's already refused to rule of military force on a NATO protected territory (Greenland) and that's when he's part of NATO. Scary times.

I'm not very knowledgeable with this stuff, but don't the other NATO countries buy a majority of their supply from the US? I looked it up, and between 2020 and 2024 64% of armaments imported to the EU came from the US. Removing that income seems like something the major arms manufacturers in the US wouldn't be too keen on.
I feel like this is a bluff on Turnip and Kegsbreath's part because they're too mentally deficient to actually engage in diplomacy. But again...I'm in no position to know anything.

Trump should really read up on the alliances the U.S. is part of and what they’re for, instead of shooting his mouth off when he’s “once again” embarrassed himself and gotten in over his head. NATO is a defensive alliance designed to respond to an attack by a country that isn’t part of the alliance. NATO isn’t even authorized to intervene in wars started by another country—even if that country is part of the alliance. Since the beginning of his presidency, Trump has done nothing but “run his mouth, make hasty decisions, and then backtrack a few weeks later, making a fool of himself.”.

no, he is considering it. The U.S. is not. He also rapes children, that doesn't mean the US does as a whole. He can't withdraw from NATO anyway. Congress passed a law already about this, in order to prevent a nut like him from thinking he can withdraw NATO. The Senate would have to vote 2/3rds to withdraw. That isn't going ot happen.
