As an outsider who only thinks they understand the very very stupid US electoral college system, I believe the people who didn't vote would only have mattered in a very few states. I have an American friend who didn't vote. His reason was he didn't like how his vote was worth as much a moron's vote (I'm paraphrasing this). He's from a state that is usually blue and ended up blue, so his vote wouldn't have mattered at all had he not been so furious at the morons and voted. Or, is my understanding wrong? I mention this for two reasons: 1) electoral college system needs fixing, 2) maybe allowing super duper morons to vote is a bad idea (this also applies to my country, though we don't have as many morons thankfully).

Your understanding is right. The electoral college allocates electoral representatives across the states who will pass on the vote of their district. Because of the way the electors are allocated there are a skewed amount of electors based on landmass rather than population. This means that the votes cast in states that are largely rural and largely desert matter far more than votes cast in the large cities. Rural areas lean Republican and large cities lean Democrat so it results in a bias towards the Republican candidate. Republicans wouldn't have won a single election in living memory if the election was actually fair.

The population in major cities grew exponentially faster than the population in rural areas. The system was designed to stop the tyranny of a few Eastern cities over the vast western plains. What it has led to is the tyranny of the rural 20% over the urban 80%. If you can win the votes of those 20%, it legitimately doesn't matter what 80% of the US population thinks of you. As an American citizen there's not much you can do about the situation. It would require a constitutional amendment to change and you'd need the consent of the people elected by those 20% to do it. Which you will never, ever get. An enterprising person or organization with the greater good at heart might find some way to make it difficult for that 20% to participate in elections, or in some other way limit their ability to influence politics.

The problem is deciding who or what constitutes a 'moron'. Its usually far more effective to go the opposite direction and make voting mandatory for everyone to water down the nut ball fringes who always vote, and to force everyone to have some skin in the game. Australia is a great example.

Not sure I understand your question, but everyone should inform themselves and then vote. Most skip the first step. Many skip the second. Even in a solid blue or solid red state, lower races are also important. And we should all vote as long as we are still allowed to.

Completely right. For the vast majority of Americans the presidential vote is meaningless because there state is solid red or solid blue. Their vote is not counted on a national level. Voting blue in a red state (or the reverse) is nothing more than a protest vote. (It’s worth going though because you can affect down ballot votes etc. ) An election for one executive position SHOULD be one-person one-vote. But it’s not. Only people in about half a dozen states have a somewhat meaningful vote.

At the end of the day Americans who sat out or went third party in 2024 are just as complicit as Trump voters. My optimistic prediction is that enough of those people will have learned from their mistake and do the right thing in future elections.

I had a work friend back in 2015 who felt very strongly about the Green Party. I was confused about how he was planning to use his vote, arguing that a vote for anyone other than Hillary was essentially a vote for Trump. He voted Green anyway. It didn’t matter and never would have mattered anyway here in Colorado, but I was still pretty worked up about seeing someone waste his vote.

There is somewhere around a fifth to a quarter of every population that just straight up supports authoritarianism and doesn't believe in democracy. They may not come out and admit it, but that's what their values are at the core. The rest comes down to decades of unregulated media propaganda reinforcing a conservative subculture that is completely detached from observable material reality. Peer pressure is one of the strongest forces in the world.

Some combination of that number are legitimate hateful racists but I think most people just vote for their “team” and buy into whatever reality their information bubble presents to them. A rural Fox News viewer believes in a very different reality than most people on this site. It is hard to see a way to “fix” without burning a lot of it down at this point. It’s both scary and depressing.

You’re correct on two fronts. The first is that yes the conservative media doesn’t tell their viewers anything bad about Trump and makes him look good whenever possible. The second is that there’s self-selection bias in the approval polls and people only answer the poll if they feel strongly one way or the other.

In America there are some people who are racist, sexist, and anti-lgbtq. All of these hateful people went out to vote against Kamala, because they didn’t want a brown woman to win (these are the same people who voted against Hillary Clinton as well because she was a woman). Simple as that. Hateful people will always go out to vote. The real question is for the people who sat on the couch last election. I’m curious why? Mail in ballots are a thing still (that option has not been removed at that time), so I have no idea why part of America sat this one out.

For the people not interested in politics you should know politicians are always interested in you. Some of them want to use your tax money to obliterate schools in wars of choice. Or stack the Supreme Court to take away a woman’s right to choose and now they’re trying to take away a woman’s right to vote if she changes her last name. Some of them stay up nights planning extreme makeovers of the United States like project 2025. They never rest and they are always at war, so you can’t passively let them re-order the world into a society that they want. Always add your vote so that they know there is overwhelming resistance to their agenda.

In the recent mid-term primary in Chicago, only 11% of 18-24 y.o. bothered to vote. They let their sworm enemy, Boomers, have their voice and vote. Boomers will be long gone and they will have to live with those decisions. 'My vote doesn't count, I was busy, I didn't like any candidates'. Unless they are planning a revolution to take power, they need to work within the system to change it. I admit the challlenge is greater than it has ever been but at least try.

When my father-in-law started getting dementia, one of the early phases involved losing all of his filters. My 5c worth from an Australian perspective: The dumbing down of Americans is almost complete. Underfunded public education, that doesn't teach people essential critical thinking skills, a for-profit healthcare and medical care that fleeces everyone of their last dollar, a corrupt political system that favours only the rich, and a completely muzzled media that couldn't interview or take a politician to task if their lives depended upon it (& it now does!). Combine all of that with a completely screwed and dumb electoral system. You lot badly need to introduce compulsory voting! Works brilliantly here. That way the 1% need to work a lot harder to win. All has contributed to getting the hundreds of millions of people making stupid choices in who they barely managed to vote in. The US is essentially fucked, for many decades. I have come to the point where I find absolutely no humor whatsoever in discussing Trump. Whenever anyone points brings up Trump in some jocular manner, I respond darkly and succinctly that I do not find it funny. This includes simple sarcasm or the typical "can you believe it, LOL" stuff. Part of this is the trauma of understanding just how many people have been and remain fully locked in this personality cult. That's the real problem. And that will remain long after Trump.
