Garrett was absolutely done dirty with the Pink Bats Scandal. It could have been so good for the country, and should have been a resounding success. As usual, dodgy operators took advantage; used illegal materials, untrained installers, and people died as a result. Deeply tragic and unnecessary.
43
kamikazecockatoo 3 days ago +20
Garrett was a victim of the kind of mainstream politics he had railed against all this public life up to that point. On his own side, Rudd made his department get that program going too quickly to stave off the Great Recession, without the usual checks and balances in place. Then a few years later, Tony Abbott whose style of politics was always down and dirty - very Trumpian before Trump - dug the knife in deeper. Garrett was more effective in politics outside of politics.

The thing is Iran and Isreal still havent agreed to anything. Trump is basicly running to the public saying dont worry everyone everything solved! (STOCK MARKET RALLY PLEASE! PLEASE CLAP!) Irans biggest leverage is the fact the west is running out of oil supply and Isreal, well Isreal still wants to see blood. Trump just wants to see what ever cycle of the moon hes in. Trump doesnt control Isreal though and hes too much of a push over to stop them and Iran still has their Ace that I doubt they are going to want to hand over. That Ace is fully reopening the straight. If its not fully opened oil prices will continue to climb.

What happens when Iran doesn’t open the Strait and says they never talked to him?
6560
Jeffuk88 3 days ago +5132
Nothing. Nothing happens just like last time, hell bluster and threaten again. Edit: just saw the 10 point peace plan on BBC and im pretty sure it puts Iran in a stronger position than before this all started; lifting of sanctions, Iranian military to control all movement through the strait... and Trump is selling it as a win? 🤔
5132
Wakez11 3 days ago +766
Yeah, lets be real here, if that peace plan goes through then Iran won the war. Trump and his cronies were so arrogant and stupid they thought they could bomb Iran into submission, and I don't think they ever even took into account that Iran would close the strait. And now they know they can't really do anything about it because they didn't plan for it. Has to be one of the biggest military embarrassments, even disasters in modern American history.
766
-SaC 3 days ago +203
He'll claim it as a win for the US, and a third of the country will utterly believe him and defend against any claims otherwise. Oligarch-owned media will back him up. Past that, anything up to *another* third of the country will shrug and say they don't really pay attention to politics, it's not their thing. But the media agrees that he won for the US, and they'd rather believe their president than another country. So the US won. Nobody outside the US or outside that bubble will be seen as relevant.

59
Wakez11 3 days ago +32
Yeah, we saw 2016-2020 and while Trump was insane he had a lot of people to reign him in and stop the most crazy shit. So a lot of people in Europe even when he won again thought that the systems and limits that are in place would limit him again, but turns out the US system is designed in a way so if courts or lawmakers say "You can't do that!" the president just has to go "I don't care" and if he has his party behind him there is nothing anyone can do about it. Its like if the entire US government for all of it's existance has run on an honour system where everyone agrees to play by the rules, but as soon as someone with fascist aspirations gets into power and simply refuses to play by the rules there are no working checks and balances to keep him from driving the entire country off a cliff.

> Trump said that the agreement was “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz,” meaning that Iran has not yet agreed to conditions. In the past, Iran has insisted it would only open the Strait in return for a complete peace agreement, guaranteeing no further attacks by the U.S. and Israel, but not a cease-fire. NYT as of 5 minutes ago  Edit: Now it seems like they’ve agreed? It’s all very confusing and hectic as is all things with President dickhead > Iran accepted Pakistan’s two-week cease-fire proposal following frantic diplomatic efforts by Pakistan and last-minute intervention by China, a key ally, asking Iran to show flexibility and defuse tensions, and amid growing concerns about the economic devastation from damages to critical infrastructure, according to three Iranian officials. They said the cease-fire was approved by the new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

I think the key word there is "China". If Iran has China's backing, they can hold out indefinitely. If they piss China off too much, then probably even their best defense plans don't involve simultaneously defending against the USA and China at the same time. The article just says that China asked Iran to "show flexibility and defuse tensions", but I'm betting the actual call was a lot more involved than that. Maybe China wants more movement through the strait, but is also promising more backing, weapons, and support in the long-term. That might be a deal that Iran could agree to even if they have to sacrifice a few tokens along the way.

He even said Iran has to accept a deal or be bombed, but *he* accepted the deal before Iran did. I mean come the f*** on lmao

Or it’s just more lies and blatant market manipulation so he and his insider trading sycophants can profit bigly.

The NYT is reporting that Iran will charge $2 million for each ship that passes through the strait. This will be shared with Oman. It was $0 before Operation Epic Fury. He just gave the Iranian regime a large indefinite stream of cash. Over 100 ships pass through the strait daily. It is so crazy to me how many talented and brilliant people roam the streets of the United States. And yet they chose their very dumbest people to lead their government.

He threatened nuclear war. Don’t sanitize it. Don’t say he never intended to. More likely he got denied. He’s not safe or predictable or innocuous. He’s a mad king, and his dementia drives him. His inner circle are insane and drunk sycophants who are manipulating him and managing him , but they want ultimate violence too. He’s pissed because Iran tried to assassinate him. He wants to nuke them. He could sundown again in a few hours and. Launch something. He needs to be removed from office, today. But instead you pick the easy narrative. Anerica needs to stop him. Today. By any means necessary. With the same conviction as his last few tweets. With the conviction of “rage against the machine” and “run the jewels.” He has gone insane. Nuclear war for fucjs sake.

Yeah but Iran won't agree so this is just nonsense. Edit: so apparently Iran did agree, which makes sense as it seems they retain complete control over the Strait. So effectively the US gains nothing, not even status quo ante.

https://x.com/i/status/2041622790298616241 The Pakistan tweet was a draft from the White House. Don't be fooled. Trump wants to look strong and Pakistan is a weak sellout that needs to be exposed.

It's possible that it was on purpose, exactly to make it clear that Trump is chickening out. In other words, "If you're gonna make me post bullshit to cover your ass, I'm going to make sure people know that it's *your* bullshit."

So Trump and his team bought calls it seems. Market gonna open in the green tomorrow and they will make money. Then they will buy puts by Friday and declare Iran being difficult on Hormuz and ceasefire deal is off. Market gonna open in the red on Monday and they will make money again. Rinse and repeat.

i agree wholeheartedly. every weekend, the supposed down time for majority of citizens, the nation is put into fight or flight mode. we are exhausted. they are doing this to manipulate the market(s) but also to wear us out to the point we can’t think straight any more. anyone who isn’t stressed out is not paying attention and/or has no soul.

Today there were calls for Vance to convince the cabinet to invoke the 25th and then immediately imprison Trump before he can officially respond. Trump's detainment without an ability to communicate is probably illegal, but it was that serious that such an action was considered. Trump is no less dangerous now than 4 hours ago. Even if we are 95% confident his next threat is a hollow one, the alternative is unthinkable. He needs to be stripped of power, and then impeached, removed, prosecuted, and imprisoned. And it cannot wait until the midterms, or even another week. It should happen tomorrow.

We all knew this would happen: - Make crazy batshit plans (destroying a civilization) if his demands aren’t met - Right before the deadline, he claims negotiations are occurring when the reality is, there aren’t any talks Honestly, Iran should have just responded with Americas famous line of “We don’t negotiate with terrorist”

Trump didnt suspend shit. He has no credit in this whatsoever other than f****** up the global economy and tarnishing American trust. The deal they came up with was issued by Iran and in their favor. He Failed. He didnt chicken out of anything he's just terrible at strategy, economics, negotiation, and relations. Hell, chickening out would be better than him just being a f****** idiot.

Bishopjones2112 3 days ago +98
Ok there we go. TACO Trump has lost the war against Iran. Not sure what else to call it. No real change to the leadership in Iran. They never had nukes so no change there. Trump managed to raise the price of oil and lose tens of billions of dollars and commit war crimes. Now he is backing down and saying the Iranian proposal is valid as a working solution. So Trump has again proven the United States lost. Lost respect, lost allies, lost credibility, lost confidence and finally lost this war.
