From the article Trump has told “useless” NATO to stay away from the Strait of Hormuz after the UK and France announced they would work to protect shipping. Kier Starmer and Emmanuel Macron vowed to lead a “multinational mission” aimed at passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire. “This will be strictly defensive, as a mission to reassure commercial shipping and support mine clearance,” the prime minister told a gathering of world leaders in Paris on Friday. But Trump hit back in another explosive rant: “I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help. I TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY! They were useless when needed, a Paper Tiger!” Trump posted.

The Strait is open because China asked Iran to open it. Trump is, as ever, entirely irrelevant in the geopolitical shit stains he creates. France and Britain will be going to verify that nobody is playing silly buggers and it’s actually safe for transit, not help the imbeciles from Washington.

I saw plenty of articles about that and then a few where it says the Chinese vessel turned around. Which is it?
51
Valtremors 1 day ago +143
That one Chinese vessel that went through did not come out of an Iranian port. At the time, US had instructed to stop ships coming out of Iranian ports. As much I love to dunk against US, there is a also some overeager people around spreading misinformation formed from partial facts. By accident, because once something spreads, it becomes true.

That blockade was probably the first rational decision by the Trump administration. It was what effectively forced China to force Iran to open the strate.

Trump thought of the blockade because he thought he could get in on the toll money, after Iran floated the concept of charging a toll.
31
Bigbigcheese 1 day ago +18
Trump did not think of the blockade... US military planners thought of the blockade... Iran was letting Iranian ships through the strait, if Iran wouldn't let anybody else go through then the US would make sure none of the Iranians got through either. Trump is just a mouthpiece with no strategic thinking at all, this was a sensible retaliatory move by the US military establishment.

To be fair, Trump has got most of the world agreeing and working together. It's just that they're all agreeing that the US is the problem, and that we all have to work together and distance ourselves from it. I mean, China, Japan and South Korea standing together? There are few collections of nations with deeper bad blood than those. England and France aren't even close in comparison.

You are not wrong about the alienating, but even without that Germany and France did not participate in the invasion of Iraq 2003. Because that was an offensive action and had nothing to do with NATO. Even without any alienating, just starting to bomb Iran without any achievable war goal would not have flown with NATO allies. It would still be an offensive war and therefore not a NATO thing at all.
86
Muted-Tradition-1234 1 day ago +42
Quite: the war on Iran is entirely outside the remit of NATO (both because it's an attack not a defensive action & also because it is outside the North Atlantic - & the US specifically restricted NATO to the North Atlantic only- as it didn't want to be involved in defending European colonies/overseas territories - such as the Falklands war). Not only that of course but just last year Vance criticised and blamed Europe for not being more forcefully anti the war in Iraq, saying that if Europe had been more opposed, the US wouldn't have wasted its time/money there. It's funny that the Trump admin criticises Europe both for getting involved or not getting involved in its stupid wars in the Middle East

Strong, yet weak.....a common theme with this regime. Biden was both sleepy and had dementia, while running the deep state cabal, and the Dem party...
18
hungarian_conartist 1 day ago +17
I feel like it's worth mentioning that while they didn't participate in the invasion of Iraq they had joined the US side on Afghanistan and the broader gwot. This is because unlike iraq, afghanistan had UN backing, legitimacy under international law, was a clear response to an ally being attacked.
17
Muted-Tradition-1234 1 day ago +17
Yeah Afghanistan (broadly) fell within NATO's remit, given that it was a response to an attack on US soil - hence why it was the first and only time that NATO article 5 was invoked - & the US's allies answered the call & their people died for it (and were subsequently mocked by Trump for it).

The sad thing is that there are a ton of supporters out there that think this wannabe strongman attitude is great. They don't care about what is actually going on. They only care about power (or the illusion of power). For them, Trump & Co. just straight up won (because to them it is always about "winning", thus something is easily sold to them if it looks like a win). They don't realize the geopolitical implications of what has actually happened.

The only thing Americans can do is try to physically enforce their will and die at the hands of the same military apparatus you see being being swung around the international theater like a prosthetic d***. All the other mechanisms for reigning in this kind of batshit insanity have been captured by techbro corporate money in cooperation with hard-line Christian-nationalist zealots. We have exactly one hope for an off-ramp, and that's for the pain Trump is causing us to combine with the cushy entitled nature of the average American voter and the over-extended gerrymandering to result in a catastrophic tamper-proof blue landslide during the midterms. That will give us a lame-duck presidency until Trump keeps over or leaves office, after which the Republicans lack a unifying figurehead to rally behind. From there we just have to hope that we vote in enough progressive candidates and apply enough pressure to patch the giant f****** holes that our ancestors left in our constitution.
42
ohell 1 day ago +43
View from afar: Midterm is the new Mueller! USA is a bipolar nation with some normal well adjusted people distributed around the fringes of a racist slaver-descended core. And this fringe prays that someone magic will save them, so they don't have to face up to the reality that they have to give up some comfort to marginalise the racist/sexist majority. Also, if by some miracle Trump aligned politicians concede majority control of the Congress, then the remainder will become even more extreme ... see Israeli PM for example. I would really worry about real attacks on lawfully governed countries' interests then ... Greenland is most obvious, Canada next, maybe even selling weapons to Russia.
43
faux_glove 1 day ago +18
From up close, it's more likely than you think. Frankly we have a great lay-up; our dictator is superficially evil and unbearably incompetent. He has made every mistake it is possible for him to make - including letting his jackboots attack the racial majority in the country, and running up the price of food and fuel to unsurvivable levels. He's shown no ability for guile, strategy or charm. Their political power has stretched thin and brittle through gerrymandering; it will take very little defection from his previous voters to crack the system, and they have been losing elections in red states at every turn.  What you need to be worried about is whether or not the Democrats will repeat the sins of our forefathers - rolling over and allowing the rot in this country to survive and plague us another day in the interest of "unity" and "moving forward". I have much less faith in us avoiding that pothole. Frankly, you should be taking a hard look at the nationalist right politicians in your country too, because the rich fuckers who did this to us want to do the same thing to you.

The midterm talk reminds a lot of "he'll certainly go to prison *this time*" talk. You're institutions are captured. Remember Trump isn't the cause, he's a useful idiot/pawn and a symptom of the greater issue of American exceptionalism that has been the pipeline to alt-right nationalism. Trump/GOP/MAGA is just the result of that. Unless you have drastic systematic change, the US has fallen and will quickly become just another pariah state.

Or organize a general strike that paralyzes the country until demands are met or the government collapses. (No need to protest, just stay safely at home with family and friends. Conversations for idiots. 1. Let's be clear: the initiative for protective and defensive actions comes from the United Kingdom and France (I don't know in which order), OUTSIDE the scope of NATO. This initiative comes from these countries, which have the best strategic positioning and military power of all European countries, and are the most "desperate," energy-wise, to restore normal supply, especially the United Kingdom. 2. NATO has not contacted the US government to say they will cooperate to secure the area, or anything of the sort. 3. The US president mentions NATO without having the slightest clue what NATO thinks of his recent actions. He simply vents his frustration on Europe, NATO, or whoever happens to be in his path, to blame them for his colossal failure in this conflict that should never have happened.
134
Kageru 1 day ago +37
And to provide a convenient justification for the US to leave NATO in the future. The group that they helped create, that gave them a network of bases with global reach, that ensured US soft power and that much of the world standardised on US weapon systems, that provided trusted allies and helped keep a global world order that enhanced their economic power.... Which they will discard because they elected an idiot filled with hate and hubris.

How is this moron President? He knows nothing about diplomacy or the world. We don't acommodate to your useless words, Donald. Do the world a favour and STFU while the world is solving your mess. Demented imbecile, that's what you are, Donald.

I keep waiting for ordinary Americans to wake up and topple this utter tool who they have elected. It's Luke waiting for continental drift. How have they not woken up to him yet? It absolutely blows my mind.

Europe knows what it’s like to have its civilians killed and bombed in their homes in a war, and their countries invaded. The US doesn’t. That’s why Europe favours diplomacy. The US May only understand once their cities get carpet bombed in the night.

I'll tell you this right now, if you're out somewhere with your friends and you start a f****** fight totally unprovoked and they don't have your back, you deserve to get the ever-loving shit kicked out of you and they should watch and laugh. That's how alliances actually work if you start the shit you finish it m***********.

This is the problem - He is incapable of separating NATO from the allies. NATO only has 1 purpose, protect the North America, North Altlantic and Europe! Any offer of assistance from France and UK, is being done outside of this. And to be clear, they never offered help Trump with Iran - They offered to help the Middle East to tidy up, once the Trump has finished throwing its toys out of the pram/buggy and fucked off home!
3
badger906 1 day ago +3
Can every sane world leader just call trump out already. Make or clear. The world doesn’t stand with him.
3
No_Group5174 1 day ago +3
"don't need you" "Why won't you help" "You would be useless anyway" "Over to you now" "Stay away" Trump's consistently just shining through the Sunsetting.

7
ChipsnDipnDipnChips 1 day ago +6
There's really no way of saying he isn't trying to help destroy the effectiveness of NATO by consistently and almost feverishly deriding it any chance he gets. He looked stupid when saying this earlier this year and now he's pouncing on this to bolster that stupid point. He didn't tell any allies he was going to attack Iran, did not formally ask them to participate, and yet this somehow makes the DEFENSIVE pact a "paper tiger".

AFTER Trump crashed the Titanic into the iceberg, he tried to sell tickets to NATO, and wondered why they refused.
5
ThirdSunRising 1 day ago +5
Ok so he didn’t need their help, and then he was pissed that they didn’t offer to help, and now they’re trying to help but he’s solved everything and doesn’t need their stupid help anyway
5

He is probably thinking they’re showing up to spike the football now that he thinks its all straightened out but I’m pretty sure the arrangement will just collapse in days anyway.

He failed to realise that this has nothing to do with helping him or the USA. Narcissistic as always. Actually this is actually more about keeping gim in check than Iran.

Red_River_Metis 1 day ago +2
Didn't JD Vance call Iran "economic terrorists" and then say something like "two can play that game"... which sort of implies that the US are acting like economic terrorists? UK and France should say they are there to protect against economic terrorists.. just don't specify which :)
