He doesn't care what it is, all he cares about is that it's something he can leverage into concessions, into getting what he wants. Which only works until it doesn't, but when it doesn't, it won't ever work again, and that's what he fails to grasp.

He can't leverage shit when it comes to threatening to leave NATO unless he has 2/3 of the senate ready to vote for it. Congress passed a law in 2023 and the president signed it; leaving NATO specifically requires congressional approval with a 2/3 senate majority vote.

... Why do you think any of that matters? First, like saying "NATO is a defensive pact", you're basically saying "these are the rules, and he has to follow them.", where we've seen time and again how effective rules are to him.
Second, and more importantly, NATO's power isn't in its rules. It's about the expectation of the US's retribution. And Trump's actions mean that even if the US remains a member of NATO, any US participation is conditional, and uncertain. Leaving is just a formality, the damage has already been done.

Exactly. The fragility of the US democracy, the courts and its oversight of corruption within the governance, has now been on display for all to see. Obviously some of the guardrails have held, while others have proven woefully inadequate. The US has to do some serious “soul searching” as to how to ensure this political debacle can never reoccur. Much work needs to be done. Getting the criminality out of governance and repealing of citizens United will go a long way in rebalancing the political equation. Indeed SCOTUS itself needs serious reform.

I lean towards the latter because he's so obviously stupid but there has to be some of the former because hes only failed upward with bigger and bigger failures, upgrading from bankrupting a steak business to f****** up NATO and a stupid war and you can't keep stumbling ass backward up the failure ladder in perpetuity. Not European, I'm a Canadian. I am currently avoiding as much USA as possible.
Trump and his band of clowns will not always be in control of Trumpganastan. The pendulum will swing.
The USA will not always be the super power it has been either. It may never be the trusted ally it once was either. There are many questions that we won't have answers to until we do.
What I want to caution you is to avoid knee jerk, emotional decisions.
If Europe or NATO closes USA access to military bases, I hope it is a well thought out, logical decision. There are consequences for actions or inaction that could be generational.
20
lynxbelt234Apr 1, 2026
+4
Agreed the damage to the US foreign policy, alliances, trade partnerships and assorted other bilateral and cooperative ventures, throughout the globe is staggering. The repair of this foreign policy debacle, will take at least 20 years if not longer. Politically the purge of the magas and their infiltration of governance, at all levels will take just as long. The “cancer” has crept into many levels of society, its systemic and as you say much of the trust and goodwill built up by generations of allied cooperation and partnership has been destroyed.
NATO is a defensive pact. Accordingly all members of the pact will have to up their game and their fiscal inputs. Many already are doing this or starting to do this. The real job will be the repair of US foreign relations. Trumps support of Putin and the so called strong authoritarian image, has its former allies questioning the US governing system, that allowed trump into power in the first place and whether or not the same stunt, could be repeated. The loss of trust is huge.

>If Europe or NATO closes USA access to military bases, I hope it is a well thought out, logical decision.
To be blunt, if the United States is no longer a member of NATO and an ally to Europe, what business would they have to maintain military bases in European countries?
The pendulum might be swinging hard to the other side, but the US has shown that the people are cool with voting in an authoritarian d***** canoe. Sticking with the US right now is a risk. You might get 4 years of peace and critical thinking, then 4 years of drama and ineptitude.

The loss in US arms sales would be huge, I thought that would make him stay in just for that. I assume NATO members would re-consider where they buy from if US dropped out. Also, having Trump in NATO is not the same as having America in NATO. Trump in NATO seems like a really bad idea at the moment as he demands offensive help whenever he messes up. Like the Strait of Hormuz is all his doing and has costed in the billions of damage to the entire world!

Dudes trying to start wars with multiple countries at the same time while also doing what he can to get rid of our allies. This is a self destruction tour. He doesn't get taken out of power if he can make sure democracy dies first.

Where were we warned about this ... oh yeah.
Key Aspects of Project 2025 Regarding NATO: (google search result from: "Project 2025 nato"
* European Self-Reliance: The proposal argues that European allies are wealthy and competent enough to handle the majority of conventional defense, with the U.S. role shifting primarily to providing a nuclear deterrent.
* Reduced U.S. Footprint: It advocates for cutting back U.S. troop presence in Europe and **scaling down military commitments to the continent.**
* Increased Defense Spending: Project 2025 proponents advocate for a new minimum spending target for NATO allies, often citing a 3.5% or 5% of GDP goal to ensure Europe can handle its own defense.
* Shift in Focus: The policy aims to "right-size" America's role in the 21st century, moving away from being the primary security provider for Europe to address challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

Trump is a b**** and it's getting really f****** frustrating watching our futures disappear while this old rapist robs us and blows shit up on his way out. We should all be in the streets everyday until he's gone. Your job isn't secured anyway. Time for an indefinite general strike among other things.

Everything he does benefits Russia.
He dropped sanctions on their oil.
He let them violate his embargo on Cuba.
By starting his useless war on Iran he's diverted munitions away from Ukraine.
All the while Russia has helped Iran target American positions in the Middle East.
Americans are paying more for every single thing; Groceries, gas, and housing. Just who is he making great again?

I am shocked by our leadership. At some point you’d think national security, maintenance of (healthy) alliances, funding basic sciences for technological development and the race against China, and so on and so forth would take precedent over partisan politics. It is long past due for him to be impeached and yet these partisanship continues. We truly deserve what we are getting. And sadly, we’ll vote the same people back in office.

Ok fine goodbye. Take your European bases with you too. Usa can no longer be trusted or relied upon anyways. Why let a country thats threatened to take over Nato allies have a foothold in Europe.

That's all he does is threatens you with a leverage . I read years ago during his first presidential campaign that he owed a lot of contractors huge amounts of money and refused to pay because he found minor or made up faults and threatened to bankrupt them through years in the courts, so they'd forget about the debt .
How did he manage to bankrupt 7 Casinos and still be able to trade ..

It's breathtaking, really, when you stop and think about it.

The president is a moron. I do jot understand why the USA does not "close" the strait. If they stopped Irans customers like Iran stopped Qatar and Saudi Iran would be weaker and have to concede quicker.
