To be honest, that's not what surprises most people from anywhere other than the US. What really surprises us is that none of the branches of the government is holding him to account, that his own cabinet sits in silence, that the news media are not calling him out for all the lies, U turns, grifting, personal insults, ally bashing or cannot / will not ak him the difficult questions. That industry leaders are not speaking up or religious figures are allowing their religion to be co-opted by this evil idiot. That more military leaders or former political leaders from both sides of the aisle are not lending their voice. That state leaderships are not doing more to argue against him and even that there isn't more civil disruption by the wider population. Everyone just seems to blame the 'other' side or accept he's an anomalous idiot that'll soon be gone. If this was going on in pretty much any other western democracy, the idiot would have been removed long before now.

Yeah he owns the list of strategic blunders. He doesn't exclusively own it, but he owns most of it. He's profoundly weakened American and has torched so much soft power we may never get back. Why would anyone trust us, even when he's gone? We showed we can and will elect crazy. We showed our worst side the world and it's not that small a cross-section of us. It's a huge number of people who enjoy and want this.
