It’s always fiscal responsibility until the defense budget comes out. At this point, the national debt is just a high score they’re trying to beat.

Republicans have not been fiscally responsible for a long time. Since Reagan they pass tax cuts without paying for them. Somehow unfunded tax cuts are fiscally responsible and people scratch their head when things run out of money.

All while offering no relief to the working class. Just yesterday the Department of Ed e-mailed borrowers to inform them they’re scrapping the SAVE plan and suddenly requiring high-ass monthly payments somehow in the next 90 days. It’s like this regime is just trying to absolutely nosedive the economy and f*** over the working class as much as possible. Total student loan forgiveness would’ve only cost about 2 trillion and is very much a worthy investment in this country. But here we are forking over that money to bomb brown children in the Middle East and still denying us healthcare or any economic relief whatsoever. Absolutely disgusting red states have this whole country in a chokehold like they do.

MayIServeYouWell Apr 3, 2026 +22
Not really... the only reasonable way is to grow our way out of it. But we're not doing that - certainly not faster than it's accumulating. Paying the interest on the debt is one of the largest expenses we have. We're passing that burden onto future generations. Trump couldn't give one shit - he's not going to be around in the next 5-10 years anyway.

zubbs99 Apr 3, 2026 +12
Excerpt from [full article](https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/policy/articles/trump-wants-add-nearly-7-202737074.html) *Budget hawks in Washington have their eyes trained on April 3, when the White House is scheduled to release its fiscal year 2027 budget request, centering on a significant “historic” defense spending increase to $1.5 trillion. The national debt crossed $39 trillion just weeks ago ...* *The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a nonpartisan fiscal watchdog, estimated Monday boosting the defense budget by the expected amount would increase total defense discretionary spending by $5.8 trillion from FY 2027 through 2036, and add $6.9 trillion to the national debt once interest costs are factored in.* *The numbers behind [Jerome] Powell’s concern are stark. Net interest payments on the national debt are now projected to exceed $1 trillion in fiscal year 2026—nearly triple the $345 billion the government paid in 2020. In just the first three months of the current fiscal year, interest payments reached $270 billion, already surpassing the nation’s defense spending during the same period. The Congressional Budget Office projects debt held by the public will surge from 101% of GDP today to 120% of GDP by 2036, eclipsing the post–World War II record.*

Can't pay for Medicare for all, daycare, student loans, school lunches for kids. But sure let's fund a war no one wants and a private gestapo.
6
The_Reverend_Dr Apr 3, 2026 +1
I am very sorry but Medicare for all and daycare and student loans and school lunches are not in the constitution. Seriously. Defense of the country is. As lofty as those may be as goals, it is not the job, business, purpose, responsibility of the federal government (a k a, the taxpayer) to pay for all of these programs. It is the job, business, purpose and responsibility of parents to provide for their kids on these things and for students to pay off the money that they've borrowed. Taxes are already too high. We don't need to add any more to the $39 trillion debt. All of these programs, Defense included, need to be cut to the bone until we can get a handle on our spending, balance the budget and pay down the debt (which is our highest budget item). Thank your predecessors and current politicians for putting us in this position. Vote all of these profligate spenders out of office, starting with the Trump/ MAGA supporters.
1
AmaroWolfwood Apr 3, 2026 +1
Women's suffrage Freedom from slavery Protection from cruel and unusual punishment Protection from unlawful seizures State's rights The freedom of speech America's precious sacred guns And many many more, all not in the constitution. The Constitution was, by design, meant to grow and change with society, and the idea that government is not responsible for the wellbeing of its people is disgusting, selfish, foolish, and against the entire reason for humans to have a society of any form to begin with. You won't magically pay bills by throwing out the refrigerator and bathtub to save on utilities. The only way out of the debt crisis is by growth. You grow by investing in your own people and creating opportunities to allow the poor to become more than just low income, low intelligence laborers. You push for technological independence and win the race for scientific progress which further creates job opportunity and societal efficiency. All of these things America at least pretended to care about before MAGA fascism grabbed hold of the most ignorant and selfish of the country and pushed for anti intellectual dark enlightenment.
1
The_Reverend_Dr Apr 3, 2026 +1
Actually, every single one of those is in the constitution.
1
AmaroWolfwood Apr 3, 2026 +1
And this is why our country ended up a fascist state of backward people afraid of moving into the future. [The Constitution has almost none of the rights the American people proudly claim to be better than other countries for.](https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/bill-of-rights-transcript) The Bill of Rights were ratified several years after the Constitution was ratified. They are not core rights of the constitution itself and can be repealed with further amendments. The point of this is our government was designed to change and meet the needs of the public as they arise. Claiming the government only needs to support a military is ignorant and un-American.
1
The_Reverend_Dr Apr 3, 2026 +1
Sorry but you are mistaken. The 27 amendments are just as much a part of the constitution as any other part. I never said that the government only needs to support the military. I might recommend some remedial reading classes for you or at least reading glasses. 1. The bill of Rights and, in fact, all 27 amendments are just as much a part of the constitution as article 1 is. The amendments are no more subject to repeal than any other part of the constitution. 2. Defense is not the only job of government but it is certainly specifically enumerated. 3. Childcare and school lunches are not provided for as a function of government as laid out by the constitution. It doesn't mean they can't happen. It means that it comes under some other legislative function, but they're not guaranteed rights. 4. No the federal government is not here to feed your kids and provide daycare for them. Apparently that is an important concern of yours and you should take it up with your legislators.

AJTerry_ Apr 3, 2026 +1
Taxes are too high? Maybe they wouldn’t be as high if the rich paid their fair share instead of bribing our lawmakers. Taxes are a necessary evil and universal health care would be cheaper for everyone in the long run. Insurance is a scam. And yes, it is the job of the government to take care of its constituents. Guess under which presidents the debt has grown the most? Two hints, it’s not Obama or Biden. Republicans are inept at managing the economy and it’s incredible how they have managed to convince Americans that they are the “fiscally responsible” party. There is also no need to mention how many businesses Trump has bankrupted himself. I guess he can add the U.S. to his resume…

I'm not even sure what all of that money is going to buy us in a world where drones are making military tech a whole lot cheaper.
1
CatCatchingABird Apr 3, 2026 +1
Apparently our military is using $4mil patriot missiles to shoot down $20-50K drones. The next time someone complains about how we don't have the money for [insert socially progressive agenda item here] ask them why we had to be so fiscally inefficient to fight a war nobody f****** wanted.
1
Over-Instruction214 Apr 3, 2026 +1
>using $4mil patriot missiles to shoot down $20-50K drones Worse...they fire up to 8 missiles per drone. Meanwhile Ukraine deals with 1000 drone attacks some nights using drones costing $2k each.

This was all completely predictable. Even if you were skeptical about the exact details, everyone with a brain knew that Trump would be a massive disaster for the US and the world. Now we're executing protesters in the street, and we're deporting our neighbors, and we're bombing children in Iran, at the cost of billions of our tax dollars. Money we give to the government so it can function. And all this waste to stroke this maniac's ego? It's infuriating.

Considering the original billionaires that hijacked the Heritage Foundation were libertarian, and every republican they've backed since taking over is really really heavy pro racking up the national debt using the military. Oil trades now are Yuan instead of USD. Iran is a Gatekeeper to Strait. USA has Oil, but no one cares. 1 Big Country gone. Now Alliance splits up, China and Russia are new rivals, EU is gone. Now its only Russia and China. China built half africa, india and so on, Russia gets smaller and smaller. China wins by absolutely doing nothing besides spamming culture, giving away money and buildng places, just producing and producing stuff.

1.5 trillion dollars per year. By my calculations, this would give the U.S. a military budget more than the next 35 countries COMBINED. It also presumably doesn't include all of the money we provide to countries like Israel and Ukraine for their own defense. Increasing our defense... errr... war budget by this amount would almost certainly force other countries to expand their military budgets as well. Aside from the political upheaval, destruction and loss of lives this will inevitably be used to inflict around the world, it is no wonder why stuff like childcare and health insurance can't be afforded. Eventually, there will be calls to cut other social programs like Medicare and Social Security and will cause the rest of the world to divert resources from humans to war preparations. What a wonderful world.
