Could someone explain to me how this market manipulation works? Everyone knows that TACO. So, how do you make money with it? Are there some suckers who don't think TACO?
9
cyberdyme 1 day ago +7
You start bombing and all manner of shit which pushes up the oil price no end - you then sell a shit load of future contracts - then at the last minute you say actually we are all good friends and watch the share oil price drop at this point you buy the future. The difference between the price is what you make.. it normally impossible to move oil price at these percentage level in such as short period of time (10 or more percentage points)

The understanding I have been given is twofold: 1. The automated algorithms that do the trading look for keywords in headlines (more or less) and trade in milliseconds; truth doesn't matter. This happens because those who code/run the machines will be punished for "missing out" but not for being wrong so long as they follow standard operating procedure and follow the herd. 2. Of course everybody *knows* about TACO, but they also know the market will move anyways and they don't want to miss out (and they could be fired for missing out) so they trade anyhow, and it pays off because lo and behold the market moves. Basically: trader A trades because they know trader B is going to trade, and trader B trades because they know trader A is going to trade. And they end up both being right! In short: day-traders suck (but they also keep the market liquid, which is good -- its all very complicated and dumb).
7
spiral8888 1 day ago +2
I understand the first one, although I would have thought that some coder would have put TACO in the algorithms so that they don't get suckered every single time when Trump opens his mouth. The second one I don't understand. The whole point of market manipulation is that some people are wrong and lose money. Otherwise the manipulators can't make money. So, if A sells because Trump says that he's gonna end a civilization, then he's going to lose money when the markets go up when TACO. It doesn't matter that B lost as well. Only C, who was convinced that TACO makes money as he buys when others are selling after Trump's threat.
2
thefrobinatorwins 1 day ago +5
I think #2 is tightly related to #1. Its a game of milliseconds. So long as you react first (or close enough) on good news, and first on bad news, then you win. And I suspect there are enough people who fancy themselves day traders who do not run at the millisecond level who see the trends and try and get on board and just feed money to the system. Point is they all know what is going on, but they also know the market is gonna do what the market is gonna do, so might as well try and get in early and ride the wave of stupid.
5
pete_68 1 day ago +2
It's not just the stock market. We're now going to have to replace all those missile and bombs. Over $10 billion worth so far. The defense industry is having a massive payday right now. (Total spending about 3x that)

They see the corruption, watching with glee, and tell their young "you see, if you try hard enough to be an immoral snake oil salesman you too can rip off a ton of people someday" ...
2
jjax2003 1 day ago +32
What people need to realize is that the stock market is made up of not just billionaires money, but a lot of your money and by manipulating the market time and time again, the wealth transfer that's happening through these billionaires getting richer is Extreme and you're just slowly losing more and more of your own money while inflation keeps going up. The cost of living keeps going up and you're blindly being robbed because you're not looking right in front of you.
32
Locke66 1 day ago +7
As well as driving up the cost of living they are effectively stealing wealth from people's retirement funds meaning they'll have a poorer retirement or even need to keep working. In the wider view it's also driving up government costs and debt which will impact what politicians can do to help people in the future (unless they get that money back somehow).

Read the other day that he issues so many threats against other people or nations, he starts to forget about them after a while. So the trick is to ignore or say something he wants to hear and continue to do nothing and fly under the radar, and hopefully stall it long enough that he’s out of office.

From Woodward's book on Trump's first term: >**Gary Cohn**, who was Trump’s **top economic adviser / National Economic Council director**, allegedly **removed a draft letter from Trump’s desk before Trump signed it**. The letter would have started U.S. withdrawal from the **U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS)**. Bob Woodward reported that Cohn said he did it to protect national security, and that Trump **did not notice it was missing**. Back in the good old days when "the adults in the room" child proofed the presidency for Trump.

I was doing some brush clearing (no I'm not GWBush) with my diesel tractor and hydraulic front loader and rear blade the other day and was thinking- trump couldn't operate a sort of straight-forward machine like this for anything. Just getting the bucket loader on and off the tractor's frame using the hydraulics and hoses, which, GASP, leak some hydro oil onto your gloves or hands, he'd just overload. He'd be out of it completely in some actual dangerous jobs that some Americans do day to day.

Trump will f*** off to conquer Cuba and leave the GCC states with a stronger and hostile Iran than ever before. Art of the deal. Its pretty much confirmed Trump in panic mode trying to desperately find an offramp, because Israel was clearly not informed of Trumps last minute decision. I would bet money, that those bombs that fell on Lebanon yesterday was ment for Iran and in furstration Bibi unleashed it on Lebanon instead before sugar daddy Trump smacks his fingers.

It's so hard to tell anymore. It literally changes every single day. One day it's the wiping out of an entire civilization, the next day it's peace talks and the next day it's another threat to start the process all over again.. it just doesn't make sense !
7
IntelArtiGen 1 day ago +7
> it just doesn't make sense ! I think it's pretty logical tbh. I mean, for Trump of course. He always threatens everyone of everything to negotiate. He puts pressure. And then, no matter the outcome, he says he won. It's been the same since 2017, do people remember what he did with North Korea?

"Just agree to my scam or I will keep bombing you." Peace existed before Trump started. There was a uranium agreement that was being followed. Trump broke the agreement. Trump and Israel started the attack. Trump and Israel caused the problem. Now Trump wants to also profiteer from the oil and from tolls on the strait. (and profiteer from stocks too, because why not) Iran is just defending. Iran was following the rules. Iran got bombed. Iran has to do something to defend, so Iran aims for important weak points. They aren't attacking people. They are attacking infrastructure that is sensitive to the aggressors, aka Israel and the US. Everything else is just political marketing bs.
