I mean, come on, comparing my lai, from 58 years ago, to wounded knee from 130 years ago is obviously stupid. My lai is still the contemporary US army. And there was an institutional coverup by the army to prevent the scale and nature of the massacre from being known, which is why the helicopter pilot who was one of the main whistleblowers was court martialled. And people who were present have pointed out that Calley was not the singular perpetrator and arguably carrying out orders given by his superiors, who never faced any consequences. And there are Vietnam vets around and about to this day. My lai was also sufficiently part of a pattern that the pentagon started a task group which specifically identified that it wasn't an isolate incident but part of a wider trend of atrocities targeting civilians in Vietnam for reasons of race. My point isn't "America bad" but more "the us army is absolutely institutionally capable of conducting atrocities and has done in the recent past" Edit: also, 500 dead civilians, many of whom were raped, and one guy gets 3 years house arrest.
