What bothers me the most about all that are the soldiers. Just look at iran/iraq/afghanistan/whatever war-torn country the us has been. It always leads to worse and the majority of soldiers don't even seem to understand what they are doing. Generation Kill really went past everyones head. But we all know all these soldiers who went to war in a foreign country for their glorious leader of stupidity and oil will all end up being "i'M a vEteRaN" when all they done was horrible things that killed harmless civilians and on paper, makes everyone look like a terrorist. But we don't use that word of course. That's for foreigners

I'd say that is a bit harsh. A lot of Americans signed up after 9/11 for an obvious reason that they wanted to defend the country that got attacked. Yes, their leaders then sent them to fight wars in foreign countries. Is that their fault?
Yes, some soldiers caused civilian casualties but most probably didn't and I would argue that there is still a massive difference between how the Americans behaved and how Russians are behaving in Ukraine. If you can point me to anything similar to what happened in Bucha, which was a deliberate and systematic killing of civilians not anything "oh, I thought he was an armed soldier" kind of case.
I say this as a person who's not an American and who marched against the war in Iraq.

> At least 347 and up to 504 civilians, almost all women, children and elderly men, were murdered by U.S. Army soldiers. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated, and some soldiers mutilated and raped children as young as 12.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse
> During the early stages of the Iraq War, members of the United States Army and the Central Intelligence Agency committed a series of human rights violations and war crimes against detainees in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. These abuses included physical abuse, sexual humiliation, physical and psychological torture, and r***, as well as the killing of Manadel al-Jamadi and the desecration of his body.
1
spiral8888Mar 27, 2026

Yes, I'm very much aware of My Lai, but that happened more than 50 years ago. I'm talking about the time period of post 9/11. Also, the person responsible for it was convicted, which is a crucial thing here.
Abu Ghraib was also bad, but nowhere near as bad as Bucha and again, the responsible people were convicted. This is a crucial difference to the Bucha massacre as no Russian has faced any consequences from their government for that action.
So, yes, people commit crimes in every environment. That's for sure. The crucial question is how the organisation that they work for deals with it.
1

1
spiral8888Mar 27, 2026

That's way before 9/11. And it wasn't sanctioned by the army but instead the person in charge was tried for war crimes. And yes, if you go back enough, you could say that Wounded Knee massacre was a similar thing as what I'm talking about Bucha here.
But the original question was about people who now call themselves as veterans.
1
RoobsiMar 27, 2026
+1
I mean, come on, comparing my lai, from 58 years ago, to wounded knee from 130 years ago is obviously stupid. My lai is still the contemporary US army. And there was an institutional coverup by the army to prevent the scale and nature of the massacre from being known, which is why the helicopter pilot who was one of the main whistleblowers was court martialled. And people who were present have pointed out that Calley was not the singular perpetrator and arguably carrying out orders given by his superiors, who never faced any consequences. And there are Vietnam vets around and about to this day.
My lai was also sufficiently part of a pattern that the pentagon started a task group which specifically identified that it wasn't an isolate incident but part of a wider trend of atrocities targeting civilians in Vietnam for reasons of race.
My point isn't "America bad" but more "the us army is absolutely institutionally capable of conducting atrocities and has done in the recent past"
Edit: also, 500 dead civilians, many of whom were raped, and one guy gets 3 years house arrest.

The US had far more than 300k for Desert Storm plus the international coalition also in the hundreds of thousands. Peak aggregate deployment was in the range of 1-1.5M. Not to mention being able to use Kuwait etc as a staging ground.
Any sustained ground action in Iran will turn into a shit show. Maybe not on day 1 or 3, but holding ground in Iran will require many weeks and months and hundreds of thousands of troops.

Population of Ukraine is just under 40 million. Population of Iran is around 92 million. Russia invaded Ukraine with around 150,000 troops. Tried to find a max number, but it sits at around 700,000 troops. 300,000 American troops will get slaughtered.

Let's be real. Send 10 thousand or 1 million troops and this thing is a still a massive FAIL.
"regime change from the sky" was a dumb, half-baked idiocy, and illegal to start with. This war has nothing to do with protecting America or defending Americans. There are no war goals left that would justify the massive economic and human damage done to-date.
at this point the US govt lacks the talent to settle this diplomatically (the \_only\_ way it CAN be settled), and the military options are HORRIBLE and WORSE. Iran is in an existential battle that they are obviously well-prepared to dominate from their own soil: They can give as good as they get.

Iran is three times the size in terms of population and size. It has historically defensible terrain and the government has much more legitimacy than Saddam's did. It also has the commercial backing of China and the intelligence backing of Russia.
WTF is an invading force of ~15k troops going to do other than get killed or captured? It's going to be a goddamn nightmare and they will have no moral support back home.

So f****** tired of this country sending innocent lives overseas to die in deathtraps. If this war snowballs to the point where we need a draft, let it be known that I'd rather commit s\*icide than die for Trump.

Iran has mandatory conscription already for 18 year olds and everyone is on recall to age 40.

It’s gotta really be a stressful time being in the armed services right about now. Just asking yourself constantly “WHY!?”)

By now everybody has got to be able to recognized Trump”s primitive “negotiating tactic” when he wants something. He keeps upping the ante using social media posts and threatening with ever worse consequences if you don’t agree to his terms. These threats alternate with statements that he already has an agreement on the way and personal attacks on the opponent saying how weak they are. In his own book “Art of the Deal” which he probably hasn’t read or has forgotten about in his fog of dementia, it says that when the opponent becomes desperate you walk away, but everyone now knows that eventually Trump becomes desperate and TACOes out. It’s getting boring tbh.

Trump cannot attack Iran without it blowing up the remaining Gulf oil infrastructure.
It can sit and wait for Trump to be removed before any discussions are entered into.
Rupert Murdoch needs to nudge Vance to get the ball rolling.

Is there a reason why troops are staying in hotels instead of bases?

Trump is a total b****** but he's not insane.
He understands the basic truth of this conflict.
The actual security of the USA is not at risk.
He is trying to fabricate a deal that allows him to withdraw that doesn't look like surrender.
The only problem is that this solution will betray Israel's goal.
But it's Trump. Sorry Bibi.

It’s hilarious, start a war to manipulate the market all while using yet another crisis to keep the flies off. What a disgraceful pos.
