Talk about voting against your own self interest. Never understood the Latino vote for trump. Well, never really understood the vote for trump in any way actually.

My son's friends parents are Latino and huge MAGA's and immigrants. But they think they are better than other people. It's wild. We talked Trump one day and I flat out said "if you put our two kids in front of Trump for a job he's picking my kid every time because he's white". She agreed. A lot of Latino's are racist too.

Cagnazzo82 Mar 29, 2026 +153
The self-hatred is palpable. Seems like the parents of your son's friend would probably pick your son over theirs for a job too. Either that or they wish they could be you and have a white son.

Weekly-Role-1132 Mar 29, 2026 +79
It's sad because their son is a good kid. But we have had to separate the friendship because they got him into turning point and now he spews white christian nationalist propaganda and I'm not going to let me son around that. He's only allowed to hang out with him in group settings from now on.

Pro_Gamer_Queen21 Mar 29, 2026 +37
That’s just f****** terrible and I hate saying it, but I wouldn’t even be allowing the group settings just because people only change for the better, if they’re shamed out of it. Though with MAGA, ostracization from the majority only seems to bolster their ideas even more.
37
Weekly-Role-1132 Mar 29, 2026 +35
I agree. Luckily the group is very diverse and they call him out anytime he starts his "the christian way is the right way c***". When Kirk kicked the bucket he started texting weird stuff and the boys called him out. I called it out in the mom chat and his mom went crazy on me but the other moms agreed and said we will not get the kids together if this continues. The mom went into her victim mode of "I'm always criticized for my beliefs and political views". As you should be,

TheBalzy Mar 29, 2026 +14
I don't think it's self hatred. I think it's superiority out of all the "colored" peoples. It's just like how Ghandi was also super racist. He's black, but he's not African...which in his eyes made him superior.
14
LingonberryHot8521 Mar 30, 2026 +6
It's more the racism than the self-hatred. Like most conservatives, they tend to think it won't affect them. It's also homophobia and misogyny (including internalized). Latin people are often very conservative in the way of hating other people and enforcing gender roles.

altogethernow Mar 29, 2026 +47
Conservatism is a deeply cynical philosophy that always reaches toward hierarchy. It's an ideology that says, "Life is unfair, that's just the way it is!" even as it struggles to propagate and maintain those systems of unfairness to the detriment of people supporting it. People from marginalized communities sometimes latch onto this, convincing themselves, "I'm just being clear-eyed about the way the World works". They tell themselves that if they can 'join the club' they'll get a leg up and be accepted. It usually doesn't work out for them.
47
Zalophusdvm Mar 29, 2026 +4
Life IS unfair and that’s just the way it is. Sometimes cancer was caused by the local megacorp dumping waste…and sometimes it’s because you inherited BRACA genes from your ancestors. The former can be mitigated (assuming they knew it was cancer causing and did it on purpose…not always true)…the latter can’t without opening up the world to some really unethical shit. (Ie gene therapy to eliminate cancer causing mutations are fine…but if you get that good at in utero gene editing…I refer you to the movie GATACA.)

jfudge Mar 29, 2026 +22
That I think is a good description of the underlying problem. Basically all support of Trump is by people who desperately want to feel better about themselves by putting another group down. It's a completely false perception of the world in which rights are zero sum, in that you have to take them from someone else to get them yourself.
22
Weekly-Role-1132 Mar 29, 2026 +3
This. They don't care how much they suffer and at what cost just as long as the group/people they hate suffer more. They are not good people.

My Hispanic sister-in-law’s husband was literally deported by ICE and she still says me and my husband are “overreacting” anytime we mention Trump/ICE and everything they’re doing to people. It’s genuinely a mental illness. If your own husband being deported isn’t enough to open your eyes, nothing will.
12
IShouldChimeInOnThis Mar 29, 2026 +6
How many times have you followed that up with "What’s your husband think? Is he around? We should ask him."
6
eerie_midnight Mar 30, 2026 +1
She’s the type of person where it doesn’t matter what you say. My hubby will be talking to his parents about ICE while she’s around and she’ll just be staring off into space all glassy eyed saying “that’s not true…it’s not true…” It’s kind of sad really. Just in vehement, pointless denial of reality. I’d say it’s a coping mechanism to deal with the trauma of losing her husband but she was like this long before anything happened to him.

My kids are fortunate to go to an amazing school. During Covid lockdown their 4th grade teacher sent them things in the mail and taught them how to vote by mail. She even made "I voted" stickers. Her lesson online was about the importance of your voice and consequences of not voting. I wish every school would do this.

Yo, so I’m a CA Latino who has been trying to understand why so many Latinos voted for Trump this time. These are my thoughts. It’s been mentioned in this thread but I’ll mention it again. A lot of people who aren’t part of the Latino community assume that Latinos are a monolithic group that always votes the same way but that’s not the case. A CA Latino doesn’t always have the same views and priorities as a TX or FL Latino. It’s way way more complex. Part of it is the state they live in but I think it really depends their country of origin. Yes, we all speak the same language but every Latino has a different experience in regards to politics and their relationship to the government they grew up in their country of origin. A lot of Cubans and Venezuelans have a strong distrust of the government’s intentions due to the communist/socialist dictatorships that have run those countries for decades. The government assumes control of economic and societal aspects in those respective countries. What has that amounted to? Hyperinflation in Venezuela where the currency has so little value that people make bags out of those worthless bills while people are struggling to feed themselves. In Cuba, they are currently dealing with a nationwide blackout for a 2nd time this month that goes on for days. People from these countries are traumatized from their governments and have only seen the negatives when the government overreaches personal rights and freedoms. It’s why these people lean towards the GOP who are supposedly the party of personal rights and freedoms and have a knee-jerk reaction whenever they hear any ideas such as Medicare for All. They think of the government from their home country that abused its people. I don’t blame them for havjng that distrust about our federal government and its intentions. But do know this, a common theme with a lot Latino immigrants and their American-born children have is some form of distrust about governments and politicians. Too many of these Latin American countries have some level of corruption. Some are subtle like my parents home country of Mexico. Many people know the narcos/cartels have some local, state and even federal government officials under their payroll. You don’t know who, but it’s a given there are corrupt politicians in the country who are secretly helping the cartels stay in business. Others are blatantly corrupt like Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. Trump’s constant barrage of criticisms of Joe Biden’s handling of immigration and the economy (whether valid or not) helped fester and grow this distrust and faith in him and the Democratic Party. It didn’t help too that Joe Biden refused to step down from running a 2nd term until he did very late in the game. The Democratic Party had no time to have a primary to pick a new nominee and they went with what was a Hail Mary in having Kamala Harris take over without a primary. Trump spun it another way. He ranted how the Democratic Party didn’t even attempt to hold a primary and simply anointed Kamala Harris as their nominee. This Hail Mary play by the Democratic Party helped bring out more anti-government sentiment towards Joe Biden and the Democratic party amongst Latinos. However, this play on anti-government sentiment in Latinos would not have been successful were it not the economic state this country was in at the time the 2024 election occurred. As someone who has voted for all the Democratic nominees in every midterm and election cycle, I have accepted that the economy was not doing well under Joe Biden. The economy was improving, but not at a margin significant enough for the average voter, especially for the Latino voter. While economic progress has been made, a lot of Latinos in this country are still part of the working class. The economic impacts due to the COVID pandemic and the inflation have really stretched thin the wallets of a lot of Latinos. I notice it with my neighbors in my apartment complex who the grand majority are working-class folks. They are struggling with the increase in grocery prices and rent. Sadly, I’ve seen several neighbors move out because the rent was too high for them to keep up. A lot of Latinos were in a tough spot economically 2 years ago as they are now. They were so desperate for some form of economic change that they took a chance on Trump because he sold them on how great the economy was during his 1st term. He promised them he alone would bring the economy roaring back to life and would bring back extra money into their pockets. They were so desperate for economic change , that a lot of Latinos were willing to vote for Trump even when he was pushing for mass deportation of illegal immigrants since he promised he would only go after criminals, rapists, and pedophiles. He would never go deport one of family members, friends, coworkers or any other loved one. Voting for Trump was a risk they were willing to take so long it brought economic prosperity for them and their family. As you can tell now that we’re a little over a year into Trump’s 2nd term you are seeing these polls showing a huge drop in support for Trump amongst the Latino community. The gamble did not pay off and a lot of Latinos are still a tough economic spot. If anything, their economic situation is getting worse on top of the added stress from Trump’s mass deportation rounding up any one of their friends or family. There is a huge buyers remorse amongst the Latinos who voted for Trump. Anything that could go wrong in their life is going wrong. I know it’s a long read but I hope it gives non-Latino a good perspective as to why so many Latinos voted for Trump despite the clear obvious red flags. Not sure if you can tell but I’ve have some sympathy and understanding for the Latinos that voted for him, hell I have some friends that surprised me with that revelation. I get where they were thinking when they cast their vote for him. But it still deeply disappoints me and I see it as a betrayal to see so many Latinos put their faith on this malignant narcissist of a man who only cares about himself. For those who want a TLDR version of this: Trump played into a lot of Latino’s distrust of governments from their governments from their country of origin and used it paint Biden and the Democratic Party as corrupt. And then he went back to his play from his 2020 playbook of “It’s the economy stupid!!” to get Latinos to vote for him if they wanted to see economic prosperity in their life.

Once you understand the Conservative mind it actually makes sense in a weird twisted way. Conservatives believe in hierarchies. So if you're a Conservative Latino in the US you believe in those hierarchies but you're in a place where you're at or near the bottom. The rational thing to do would be to reject the hierarchical mindset and oppose the party that promotes it, and most do (which is why overall Latinos tend to be more Democratic than whites). But for many of them they aren't that introspective. Instead they try to find a way to be higher on the hierarchy. One way to do that (at least in their minds) is to vote for Trump and the Republicans. That proves they're "one of the good ones", right? Of course in reality Republicans will never look past their skin color and treat them as anything more than useful idiots.
4
dlini Mar 29, 2026 +7
It's not uncommon for women and minorities to vote against their interests. It's a type of assimilation. It's easier for most to "join" than stand out against a white male My schema shift occurred when prop 187 CA passed and bilingual education disappeared (and stricter anti-immigrant policies were implemented). Many Latina colleagues of mine were in favor of this and I better understood the "close the door behind me" mentality. Especially from those who were from South America and not from Mexico. It's a big world with a lot of racism to go around.

Mike Madrid has a great post somewhere explaining the Latino vote and how most non-Latinos and the Democrats in general just assume and lump that entire demographic into one single entity and how that's wrong. A Texas Latino voter is entirely different than a California Latino voter. Different backgrounds, different ideals, different motives, different stances in issues. Pretty eye opening to me as a non-Latino myself. Yeah I understood the Florida voter was different, but after reading this breakdown really made me understand just how and why Trump got the support he did - and it wasn't just a bunch of dumb people voting against their self interests.

Maybe up to now. If he crashes the economy with this unbelievably stupid war, that could easily change and 90% of people with over 5 million in wealth would have been better off with Harris. Note: the war is incredibly stupid from true US interests, but I recognize the primary crime of this war of aggression is it violates the UN treaty we signed (which, as all treaties we sign has the force of federal law) and we have committed war crimes targeting civilians on top of this crime.

I get really tired of these seemingly daily articles from various outlets about “record new lows”. It’s never true. 36%? His approval has consistently been in the high 30s to mid 40s for a decade. I check every week. The polls cited here are the two most convenient for the narrative out of a dozen or more taken in the past couple of weeks. If we really want to be honest with ourselves, Biden’s numbers were often as bad or lower. That’s how irredeemably willfully clueless our society is. Stuff like this signals to entirely-too-comfortable people, especially in the suburbs, “Relax, this will take care of itself.” Seems to me things keep getting worse and this is, in fact, not taking care of itself. If he’s ever in the 20s, there will be something to talk about. In the meantime, assume all future elections (assuming they’re free and fair - a big if) will be close.

At any given time, somewhere between 30-40% of a population will be authoritarian. [2024 Reuters report on it.](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/02/28/who-likes-authoritarianism-and-how-do-they-want-to-change-their-government/) That population tends to lean right. So unless a massive catastrophe that affects those people so much that they are at risk of death or destitution, there will always be a ~30 percent or above for Trump.

2

? Bush was in the high 20s and massively underwater by the 2008 election. And, again, Trump’s numbers have been in the same range for a decade, including being underwater.

>Bush was in the high 20s and massively underwater by the 2008 election. And, again, Trump’s numbers have been in the same range for a decade, including being underwater. Because Trump literally has a cult? If Trump didn't have that 20-25% MAGA backing him he'd be in the low 20s. This is why analyzing information is important. As MAGA support and supporters start to drop so will his polling. Though it's also important to remember Presidents usually see pretty big dips when they exit anyway.

An important thing to point out is his *overall* approval rating not changing much isn't as important as the individual metrics - all of which are swinging away for him, pretty wildly. He's underwater on literally every single issue with the majority of Americans. MAGA may be his core, but make no mistake - people are deeply unhappy with Trump and what he's done over the past year.

The breakdown of the "Hispanic" vote shows 60% of Cubans voted for Trump. Only 35% of other Hispanics did. Cuban Americans are 85+% white. White Hispanics vote exactly like all other white Christians. https://www.as-coa.org/articles/poll-tracker-latino-vote-2024-us-presidential-election

The men are often misogynists and older Latinos are conservative, aka anti-choice.

Hes never going to jail no matter what happens. The sooner you realize that the sooner you can hope for realistic change. The democrats had all they needed when he was no longer president and did nothing.
34
Due_Bluebird3562 Mar 29, 2026 +13
At this point I don't give a shit. He'd spend a few months in jail anyway with his health. What's more important is ending MAGA as a concept and his exit does that to a major degree.
13
Zest724 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Very disappointed in the democrats for that.

This. The Supremely Compromised will park his immunity and self-patdon cases on the slow boat to Russia docket and by the time they do anything, he’ll be dead.
1
Smooth-Ad5257 Mar 29, 2026 +9
Can we get some numbers here, I have the feeling i am read "new low" for over months now ... How low can it get? How many Americans still believe, he is the best?

Angwe83 Mar 29, 2026 +6
I’m sorry but I don’t go by polls. They’ve proven to be false a lot of the time. I will wait and see how midterms go to see if people have become wiser.
6
Trick_Incident_8227 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Polls aren't false. A poll, in this use, is literally just a sampling of opinion. The extrapolation of that data can be unreliable, if that's what you mean.
3
Angwe83 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Yes they are unreliable, which is why I don’t go by them. 1. People lie 2. Who answers phone calls for polls? Is that really a good view of voter mentality? Going by voting patterns is what matters. Lower MAGA voter turnout and an increase non party affiliated, Dems and independents has helped Dems win most of the special elections.
3
PenAndInkAndComics Mar 29, 2026 +4
Maybe I'm moving the goal posts, but I don't really care of this or that group is no longer supports Trump, I want see them stop supporting republicans.
4
ginrumryeale Mar 29, 2026 +4
The Latino/Hispanic vote was the *only* significant demographic shift toward Trump in the 2024 election. Latinos swung so hard for Trump in 2024– **+14%** that this single factor put Trump in the White House a second time. All other demographics remained the same (or within margin of error) as 2020 when Trump faced Biden and Trump lost.
4
Alternative-Ending_ Mar 30, 2026

A "shift" is comparing % of votes. If you lower the bottom number (total number of ppl voting) but focus on reducing it only from liberal areas, it will look like a shift. That's just math Example - From 3R/(3R+7D) to 3R/(3R+5D) will look like a shift from 30% Republican to 37.5% Republican... Just from suppressing liberal areas. And Republicans constantly focus on voter suppression.

Amazingly, his approval rating is still higher than the democrats.
5
Gordon_throwaway Mar 29, 2026 +6
Because being a Democrat isn’t membership in a cult.
6
a_rabid_buffalo Mar 29, 2026 +4
There are many people including me who are a Democrat and will vote for democrats. I still don’t approve of the way they have handled themselves since the 2024 election. They shot themselves in the foot by infighting and Nancy Pelosi encouraging Biden to step down. I would have rather had Biden finish the race and still lose vs swapping someone out at the finish line and still lose. Chuck Schumer and the Jefferies need to go. They are nothing but political theater who cannot bring their party together. Why would anyone respect them when their only instinct is to write “strongly worded” letters?
4
Infinite_Run_4541 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Locking them up and deporting them is almost enough to sway the latino vote against Trump.
6
Nvenom8 Mar 30, 2026
Those that remain will insist it never could've happened to them because they're "the good ones".

Happy_Feet333 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Another article saying that Trump's popularity has plummeted from last week's 36%... to 36%. Seriously? Are journalists this dumb... really thinking that a net zero percentage change is a sudden and rapid drop in popularity?
3
Due_Bluebird3562 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Different polls have different approval ratings. Also Trump has a much higher floor than other Republican presidents since he literally has a cult.
3

I’m not confident in the midterms. I don’t have faith in today’s voter. It’s a mix of moral purity voters and shit candidates.

“A Reuters/Ipsos poll released March 24 found 36% of voters approve of the president’s job performance, the lowest it has been during his second term. The poll found 62% disapproved. Other polls, such as the AP-NORC poll, placed the figure at 38%.”
2
Alwaystired254 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Well still more popular than democrats? What a shithole country
2
Pippi-ki-yay Mar 29, 2026 +2
If his ratings hit a new low every time I see this headline, they would be approaching -400 now. Enough with the lies. There is a solid 30% who would let Trump literally murder them if he told them to.
2
ZeroMocha Mar 29, 2026 +2
Latino shift? He deported a bunch of them who were citizens
2
ABA477 Mar 29, 2026 +2
The Latino vote changed the world. Its kinda sad really. All my Latin friends who voted for Trump justified their vote because they wanted border control and wanted to send a message. I can't tell you how many people were mislead or deported. Green Cards. Legal path to citizenship. You name it. No one is safe. If they are in your town, you need to take a long trip far away.

nurseferatou Mar 29, 2026 +2
Hold on to your pants. Trump’s folly in Iran will lead to thousands of US casualties if he doesn’t back off. Americans are not ready to watch videos of their children being ripped apart by FPV drones. The war in Iran may enjoy wide Republican MAGA support, but the polls hide how shallow that support is. Of the 50,000 service members in the Middle East, how many would need to die for the president’s party to lose the senate? I wonder if it’s a very different threshold for 25th Amendment to be invoked
2
NoKids__3Money Mar 29, 2026 +2
I’m really tired of these articles that talk about Trump’s ABYSMALLY HISTORICALLY LOW CRATERING POLL NUMBERS and when you go and check the numbers it’s a whopping 1% lower than the last poll from a month ago

People voted for him to fix the economy and lower prices. He's made the economy worse and the price of gas has skyrocketed.
2
TotallyHumanDad Mar 30, 2026 +2
It’s utterly adorable and so American to think elections as usual will fix this . Not saying don’t vote Saying , don’t just be prepared to vote
2
justaguyinjoco Mar 30, 2026 +2
Latinos won’t be able to vote in the midterms. Trumps goons (ICE) will turn them away saying, they’re not citizens.

Shame they helped him get elected twice in massive numbers

None of this matters. The only thing that matters is him being out of office and not being replaced by someone equally as bad or worse.

How optimistic to think there's going to be fair midterms. Trump's people know that if the GOP loses control of Congress, Trump is going to jail. And all the people who have been breaking the law on his behalf are too. They're seeing the way the polls are breaking, and they're getting desperate
4
Due_Bluebird3562 Mar 29, 2026 +2
>How optimistic to think there's going to be fair midterms. At this point it literally doesn't matter what he tries. Dems are getting the House at the very least and there's basically nothing short of nuking polling stations he can do about it. That's how bad his current situation is and that situation will continue developing as Iran and the economy unfold. >Trump's people know that if the GOP loses control of Congress, Trump is going to jail. I don't think his cabinet gives a shit about whether he goes to jail or not. They care about if THEY'RE going to jail or not. The second that becomes a real possibility they'll start to turn on one another. >They're seeing the way the polls are breaking, and they're getting desperate I actually don't believe this is true for the Senate. Thune seems perfectly content with losing the Senate majority role should November's bloodbath actually happens. Republicans operate better as an opposition force than governing party and Thune knows that. Johnson on the other hand is f****** cooked. He's disliked by basically everyone in the House including his own party. The House is going to be Dems almost gaurenteed at. This point and there's next to zero Trump or Johnson can do about it.

So many people in America are unhappy these days. The only way they can get rid of this lousy government is by voting. Show them that it’s not impossible—it’s possible—and make sure everyone understands why and how important it is to vote. Otherwise, things will only get worse!

I grew up in a poor rural area that was heavy Republican. They appeal to these people through religion, guns, and convincing them that they work hard and have so little because there are other people not working and just taking part of the money they work for. Then whatever Republican policy that ultimately ends up harming them it’s still the fault of people taking advantage of the system.

Oh yay, we're supposed to be happy those dumbfucks FAFO now? Like whoopdeedoo. Racist Hispanic men wouldn't vote for a black woman so they instead voted to have their friends and family deported and their citizen family harassed by ICE. My sympathy is broken. Maybe I'll care if we see Texas flip blue or something, because we've been hearing that's coming for a long time but Hispanic voters have this thing they do where they start to think they're white if they've been here awhile.

Cultural symbols are important, people are shallow. Rural Mexican-Americans are shown a choice between pick up trucks/cowboy hats versus drag queens, men in women's sports BS and rainbow flags....
