And someone like Musk will just shut down airports in cities he thinks are too liberal. Pass an anti-trans law or I’ll shut your airport down.

Trump has no concern about mid term because he isn’t on the ballot. House reps have to get through primaries first and if they piss off Trump they won’t survive those.
20
macrowaveMar 28, 2026
+2
I think they just don't care if they have power or not. It's not like congress has done a whole lot the past couple years. They're not trying to govern and pass bills, they just need enough people to stop congress from functioning so Trump can keep ruling by executive order. Even if they lose control of the house most of them will keep their jobs. Sure a few in the competitive districts won't, but Republicans aren't exactly known for empathy so I doubt the rest of them care.
2
motexmexMar 27, 2026
+11
That’s because there’s no one left in power to tell them no or tell them what to do. Example, Pam Bondi.
They know that if a Democrat or any sane person has power - there will be consequences. But they don’t. Not when you run the senate and house and then have a military commander and fbi director that do whatever Trump says.
They are not going to go away peacefully.
11
alexander1701Mar 27, 2026

It's that they've gerrymandered their districts so effectively that for the bulk of them a primary challenge for compromising is a much bigger threat than a voter's revolt at the midterms.
38
ftgyhujikolpMar 27, 2026

Gerrymandering is a double edged sword though, as it makes the margins in each district smaller. This means that if you anger everyone enough, your safety seats turn into blowouts and you lose more than you normally would.

Napolean_BonerFarteMar 28, 2026

Their voters are unswayed. They will vote Republican regardless. No matter what.
Democrats have a very fickle and diverse voter base. And foreign misinformation campaigns that remain unabated only serve to help Republican campaigns.
I want to believe this is what gives them this kind confidence and not some massive country-wide conspiracy.
Then there’s the plan where they just simply say , unproven, the election was fraudulent and not recognize the results.

That person only has power because other representatives give him power. I believe that with the current breakdown, it would only take 2 republicans (or some similarly small number) to vote with democrats to remove his power or overrule him.
He only has power because Republicans unanimously give him their power.
So it's not really "one person", it's just every republican being awful.

3
DuckSpeaker_Mar 27, 2026
+6
This is a framing issue and it's one to be mindful of in terms of it being deliberate. (Not from you, but from the creatures who manage the part machinery)
The Speaker does not inherently have unchecked power to do this nor anything else. Congress selects their speaker. Republicans have the ability to check the speaker by replacing him. They choose not to. Mike Johnson's power is unchecked in the same sense that my cat would have unchecked power to consume a pound of ground beef if I put it on the floor and elected to sit there watching what happens without stopping her.
And at this moment in history, with a majority that is so thin it nearly doesn't exist, the coalition of Republicans that would be needed to put an end to this is such an absurdly low bar to clear that the optics are better for them if a person like Mike Johnson can absorb the spotlight and appear to shoulder all the blame.

How else are they going to justify ICE at the airports ... a precursor to them being an the ballot boxes?
This is all about the election. They KNOW they have lost Congress by the issues.
The only thing left is for them to suppress the vote. It's all that matters, which is what Trump has already said about SAVE.

Any moment now they’ll call it the Democratic shutdown again. These people have the self awareness of a pile of shit. Which I guess is fitting.

Wow they did end up blocking it?
Are they just trying to start a civil war at this point? They want to exit the Iran war by starting a civil war? They're going to just burn the whole country down until a civil war breaks out?
6
WhiskeyJack357Mar 28, 2026

No. They don't want an actual hot civil war. They'll block it just to complain the Democrats are unreasonable and not hand them the win. Republicans want to prevent the government from working so they can sell their voters a "fix".

Throughout this shutdown, Democrats have been working tirelessly to find a resolution, yet the Republicans keep blocking progress and then try to put the blame on the Democrats. The real villains are the Republicans since this is the 10th or 11th bill they rejected

Johnson knows if it got a vote it would pass, and that would make Trump mad, and he would probably call for Mike to be replaced. He cares more about being speaker for a few more months than doing what’s right. And what’s funny is this decision makes it even more likely they’ll lose the house, and possibly the senate.

The republicans are WINNING so hard right now, it's unbelievable! They have unchecked reign in all branches of government... and look at what has happened to our government: It's been shut down and they can't even figure out how to fund it. What a bunch of loser idiots. I suspect that there's going to be a sea change in November.

The Republicans are delulu at this point. Even if this emergency declaration partially funds the TSA for a short time, the TSA workers are already leaving in droves and I can't imagine a bunch of them wanting to stick around if their jobs are nothing more than bargaining chips to be bandied back and forth in Congress. Some might come back but a lot of them are gonna simply move on. And they were already understaffed before all of these budget issues even surfaced.
Any chance they had of convincing the public that this is Dems fault is basically gone at this point.

Millions of people have deluded themselves into thinking Speaker Pelosi was somehow worse, more corrupt than any Republican alternative, but it’s not even close!! Speaker Pelosi served the Nation and House with dignity and worked with 2 ridiculous Republican Presidents, W and Donnie, while navigating numerous important votes.
Republicans are such vile traitors, ready to destroy our nation from within!

Do Americans ever find it strange that other civilized countries don't really have these problems? I'm in Canada, I don't think we've ever had a shutdown, as far as I know. Maybe your system of governance needs a firmware update?

The Senate passed a bipartisan bill then left for a two week Easter recess, and dropped it in the House's lap on the way out. So now House Republicans are being asked to fix a crisis they helped create on a timeline they hate, with a bill they didn't write.

Emails went out, supposedly they’re getting backpay on March 30. No mention of anything beyond that so they’re guaranteed to miss another check before the Senate comes back and everybody else working within DHS that isn’t harmed hasn’t been paid a penny so they’re going to miss at least four total paychecks, probably more. Workers at FEMA, civilians with the Coast Guard, CISA all going unpaid.

Masterful gambit from the geriatric, pants-shitting pedophile himself. Trying to play the hero with his executive orders after telling his sentient ventriloquist dummy made of dried dog jizz to kill the only deal that has made sense. All so they can blame democrats longer? I wonder at what point he's going to circle back to his old favorites of blaming Biden and Obama for choosing to start a war based on his big-brain vibes.

Trumps executive order is likely not legal. It’s not a bad thing for the TSA to get paid in context, but it *is* a further seizure of power by the Trump administration. I doubt anybody will sue to block it because the optics of doing so are obviously pretty bad, but that doesn’t mean that its a good idea to passively allow presidents to just executive order away budgetary disputes either.
