"Relevant authorities" of which nation? Does this mean they paid the Iranian toll?
After reading story, this headline change is also in order:

No, apparently they skirted the shallow water area as far from Iran as possible. There is no reason for Iran to target cruise ships, but they still stayed as far as possible from the old traffic separation scheme that ships used before the war; that is likely mined.
49
Markdd8Apr 19, 2026
+19
Right, they were in southern waters, which are legally controlled by Oman and U.A.E. according to maritime law. Ships can enter and exit the Gulf without ever entering Iran's territorial waters -- the northern half. Iran had no business trying to commandeer the entire Strait.
19
jks513Apr 20, 2026
+25
The problem with those waters is that the draft is pretty shallow so those cruise ships could pass but an oil tanker would run aground.
25
Nervous_Squirrel_Apr 20, 2026
+12
Cruise ship was also empty, had no passengers. So would be lighter. Probably also had no food stores and extra supplies like it normally would.
12
Webbyx01Apr 20, 2026
+11
And cruise ships already have a fairly shallow draft, to enable them to reach more places with the same ships, along with not operating in heavy seas or weather as often as transport vessels.
11
Markdd8Apr 20, 2026
+1
The water on the Oman/U.A.E. half is deep enough for tankers to pass.
1
jks513Apr 20, 2026
+2
Those cruise ships hugged the coast in a way the tankers could not to stay out of range of the Iranian weapons.
2
Markdd8Apr 20, 2026
+1
Iran has speedboats with machine guns that range over the entire Strait. If the U.S. military tries to suppress them, they can fire Shahed drones against violating ships. The Strait is only 21 wide at narrowest point.
1
nithreanApr 19, 2026
+6
i am not sure that the Iranians have cared about what they have business doing ... If they did, we would not be in the present situation.
6
fury420Apr 19, 2026
+3
Surprisingly, skirting around that Omani peninsula as far as possible from Iran actually passes through some of the deepest waters in the strait, depth maps show it deeper than the normal traffic separation scheme.
Iran's waters are the shallowest parts of the choke point bend of the strait, although once further into the Persian gulf the deeper sections do pass through Iranian waters.
3
myname_1s_mudApr 20, 2026
+2
Unlikely. Theres a very specific route iran said ships have to take to avoid mines. Even if they trusted that this area wasn't mined, course deviation would definitely bring heat from the Iranians. My guess is they asked for permission, and iran obliged because they didn't want to deal with the fall out of sinking a cruise ship if things kicked off. That would require a huge rescue effort, and pretty much force the us navy to go in. The cruise company may have paid, but I really doubt they just took the risk and ran for it.

For context, this was during the Iran-Iraq war when Iran mined the Straits to stop Iraq from exporting oil through Kuwait.

If you watch ship traffic over the past 24ish hours you see a tanker or two make it throughthen a bunch line up to go and while one takes fire from a small boat the cruise lines skip through on the Interior line, the all the tankers turn around. There arent hundreds getting through.
