Who or what is "MK" in this context? I read the article twice and seemed to have missed it.

JE1012 20 hr ago +528
MK=Member of Knesset. The Knesset is the Israeli parliament
528
Why_No_Doughnuts 14 hr ago +66
Yep, same as when the British and Canadians use MP

kwed5d 14 hr ago +20
Who or what is "MP" in this context?
20
Why_No_Doughnuts 14 hr ago +33
Member of Parliament. It is the person who represents your riding. The leader of the party with the majority of MPs is the PM, or the leader of the biggest party in the coalition if it is a minority government, which Israel is currently, and Canada was with Trudeau. Canada still technically is, but by one vote now and no other party has enough of a mandate to form a government.

Who or what is a "riding" in this context?
29
Why_No_Doughnuts 11 hr ago +23
The territory the MP represents. Example: PM Carney is the MP for the Napean riding in Ottawa. The party the riding elected though might change if the MP crosses the floor, which has been happening a lot lately, so much so they had to install a zebra crossing on the commons floor. (yes I know it was in the beaverton)

Who or what in this context is a “zebra”?

A mid '70s hair metal band, but that's not important right now.

Was trying to figure that out. I want to guess based on the context it's a Member of the Knesset (Israel's parliament)
11
eaglebtc 7 hr ago +2
Correct. It's the Israeli equivalent of "MP" (Member of Parliament) for the UK or Canada.

The quote is quoted as from Eliyahu, but I have no idea what the abbreviation means either. Probably a title or position
28
AlbaIulian 20 hr ago +49
MK - Member of the Knesset (i.e their legislature). Like how Brit members of parliament are MP's.

And a naval blockade of Iran isn’t something you just throw out in a truth social post. It would mean the U.S. Navy physically stopping ships going in and out of Iranian ports, including Chinese tankers. That’s basically pointing guns at China and daring them to respond. Trump has started WW3 This was always my fear of his presidency, and he did it at record speed.
226
barbariccomplexity 20 hr ago +68
A “claimed” naval blockade, what he says and what actually happens are rarely in alignment.
68
Elukka 21 hr ago +85
What happens if there are 20 Chinese tankers coming out in an unarmed convoy and they refuse to stop? Will the US have enough warships, speedboats and helicopters to board them all? What if the tankers have armed Chinese soldiers onboard even if they're not supposed to as commerce vessels and they explicitely say they will fire on illegal boarders? Or what if there is even a single modern Chinese frigate present and they draw the red line right there? This is insane. Within less than 2 years the US went from being the guarantor of freedom of navigation to a privateer flag. Really?
85
soldiernerd 20 hr ago +36
They can do boarding ops anywhere in the ocean so they could board them one at a time. Tankers are sitting ducks. I'm not advocating for this, just answering from a tactical perspective, yes, they would have the resources to board all 20, because they would have days to do it.

50 marines, 3 helicopters per ship I suspect they could do all at once edit: not supporting ANY of this bullshit, just saying
17
Corpus76 17 hr ago +45
> edit: not supporting ANY of this bullshit, just saying This is part of the problem man. You guys have this irrepressible awe of your military that somehow diverts attention from whatever other concerns are present. Venezuela: Was it legal? What kind of precedent does this set? >Who cares LOL, the US can do literally anything! I'm so impressed by Delta Force right now! No other military in the world could accomplish something like this! Greenland: What the f***? >Well, technically the US armed forces could destroy the entirety of Europe, also we have nukes. Not supporting btw, just saying! Iran: What's the plan here? Why was a school targeted? >Dunno lol, but the US air force sure is powerful, golly gee! AC-10s go BRRRRRRT Iran 1.2: Should the US commit piracy? >WELL, I'm just saying they *could* if they wanted to... --- Point being, the original poster was worried about the possibility of WW3, not America's ability to capture Chinese tankers. I'm not trying to jump on you specifically by the way, sorry if it comes across like that. I've just seen so many similar comments this year and can't help but feel like it's entirely the wrong thing to focus on. Yes, the US is very powerful, nobody disputes this. The question is not whether you could, but rather if you should. I guess I just expected more outrage from the US populace from the suggestion of betraying and murdering alleged allies, not theorycrafting. (I'm aware that both can co-exist, especially from military nerds, but come on. This is serious.)
45
thecloakofignorance 17 hr ago +17
The inference should be that USA has more than enough power to do incredible stupid, dangerous, not to mention evil shit We are not disagreeing here. Also, I'm Canadian. I'm passed outrage phase and into the defend and be prepared phase that said, there are indeed to be plenty of Americans, significant minority, who just get pleasure in blowing shit up and just say "opops sorry" if it hapens to be a middle school
17
Corpus76 14 hr ago +13
Alright, fair enough man. Sorry I misjudged you. I just feel like a lot of Americans are easily distracted by this sort of talk, and that it contributes to making them believe they're literally invincible. (A bit like a drunk driver.) I think we should maintain focus on the disastrous long- and short-term consequences for the world at large (which includes the US and it's people), if we're to convince any of them to change course. Probably won't deter MAGA fanatics, but maybe the disinterested fence-sitters at least. Praising their military will simply be interpreted as "WOOOOO, USA NUMBER ONE BABY!!!"
13
NeedleworkerPure7162 12 hr ago +2
If the helicopters aren't shot down mid-air of course.
2
soldiernerd 20 hr ago +3
It’s possible. I don’t know anything about USMC structure and how many marines are trained to board ships so I’ll take your word for it!
3
Jeffuk88 21 hr ago +15
Or France or Spain if they pay a toll to get ships through... hes blockading it against any ship friend or foe to spite Iran
15
ntsp00 20 hr ago +24
No, he's doing it to spite every country that's not helping him. Other countries are cooperating with Iran and not only does it hurt Trump's ego whilst making him look weak, it also leads down a path where only tankers intended for the US and Israel are denied passage. He's doing whatever he can to disrupt every other country that's not getting involved to spite them and force their hand. He's counting on other countries not wanting to challenge a US blockade. It's funny how just the other day he wanted to make this "illegal toll" a joint venture, and now he's blockading his own allies' tankers over it. If the US can't have Iran's oil, nobody can apparently.

No, is has *implied* WW3 to tank the market, then he will back off again in 2 days and the line will go back up. Then a lot of people with a lot of money will make even more money off of the obvious market manipulation he's been doing this whole time.
6

Look at John Oliver's report on Orban and then look at Project 2025. It's the same playbook.  Why was Manifort, an American, advising Russian supporting Ukrainian politicians? I don't like conspiracy theories, but I suspect that there is a group out there pushing this agenda and it may have taken on a life of its own. Probably Russia, but maybe just billionaires.

Yeah, he's just an annoyingly effective coalition builder. His willingness to stand by absolutely no position, and thus make promises to any party, makes him obnoxiously good at keeping power regardless of support for himself or Likud.
16
isaacfisher 11 hr ago +3
Stand by no position but play dangerously with the extremists. Cutting anyone with half a brain and a working backbone inside the Likud that can overshadow him. Have an amazing ability to tell lies and throw anyone under the bus if needed.

Erdogan and his ilk have to occasionally pretend to hate Israel to placate their lame extremely religious base. Then they go buy weapons from and trade with Israel. It's the same with the gulf countries. People in power don't give a f*** about gaza really, they only use it to gain power over gullible people. If anything Gaza annoys them.
407
AdonisK 20 hr ago +81
Don’t forget how they basically invaded neighbor countries (Syria, Iraq) to create buffer zones in the same manner and the same “reasons” as Israel. Also let’s not forget that they currently occupy northern Cyprus. Absolute hypocritical stuff.

No? I suggest you look up what he has been doing to kurdish communities for the past decade. Turkey has also colonized Cyprus for 50 years now, but somehow, erdogan conveniently forgets. As does the west
59
LilyBelle504 21 hr ago +15
Speaking of Cyrpus... Turkiye's situation in Cyprus shares many similarities to Israel and Palestine. \- Turkiye has been occupying Cyprus since 1974. \- Turkiye originally claimed it was to "protect" ethnic Turks, who only numbered a couple 10,000 or so. Since then Turkey has moved 100,000s of Turkish settlers there to change it's demographics, which is now nearly entirely Turkish in it's controlled area, with the obvious goal of controlling as much of Cyprus as possible. \- No other country recognizes Northern Cyprus as part of Turkiye. \- Turkiye refuses to leave to cede the land back to Cyprus. A country that is tiny by comparison and has nearly half it's island taken. Yet people don't seem to be aware of this.
15
whereamInowgoddamnit 21 hr ago +11
Yep, people always whine about "well we're funding Israel to do", meanwhile Turkey is a NATO member and has been as bad if not far worse than Israel. If a 10/7 happened there you'd bet they'd be carpet bombing the Kurdish side of the country
11
HarEr89 22 hr ago +56
He is. Erdogan puts people in jail for 100s of years if they could win against him in elections. He would crush protesters like the IRGC did in January.

If he is serious he can close their port of the BTC pipeline first. https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/iran-threat-enemy-oil-lines-raises-fears-over-btc-pipeline > Close to 30 percent of Israel’s supply of oil flows through the BTC pipeline. - > The port is the last stop on the BTC pipeline, from where oil is then shipped from the Heydar Aliyev Terminal at Ceyhan in Turkey to Israel.

Since KSA started moving towards modernization, there was a vaccum in the leadership of extremely conservative and radical spheres . Turkey under erdogan started to fill this vaccum and take the position of leadership in this sphere . And the best way to gain popularity is threatening israel . Erdogan is an empty vessel , a politician who knows how to rile his voter base and distract from the tumbling economy. If he wanted to do something he would have already done it.
