TV shows about pirates? (not a question about pirating media)

Posted by Underwater_Karma

i just finished Crossbones and Black Sails, are there any other pirate tv shows out there? doesn't have to be traditional Caribbean type. and just a note: in all of "Black Sails', there isn't a single black sail.

The obvious one I can think of is One Piece which is an anime, but does have a recent live action remake Also Our Flag Means Death (comedy)

I finally got around to watching the live action and was surprised at how much I ended up liking it. I wanted more, so I tried to watch the anime... I couldn't stomach all the anime-ness of it unfortunately. I def recommend the live action even for people that don't like anime.

Same. Love the live action!

Its the episode count that gets me, there's like 1200 of them and I don't got that kind of patience.

XCPuff Apr 7, 2026 +13
I started watching them in October, I'm on episode 1055 right now. Gotta say, it's a pretty f****** incredible show. I put it off for so long because I had the exact same thought as you about episode count but it honestly doesn't feel very long after all these months later. Granted I haven't been watching every single day or anything but the storylines keep you hooked and going back to watch more.

Either read it or look up One Pace if you want to dive in. I promise it doesn't feel as dragged out as it looks

Worthyness Apr 7, 2026 +7
Can also read the manga. Cuts out all the fat for the most part.

LimerickJim Apr 7, 2026 +3
Apparently if you push through the first 25 episodes it gets amazing. They're remaking the anime to remove all the filler too so you might prefer that.

DemythologizedDie Apr 7, 2026 +4
Except for the part where the voices of the main lead make me want to stick needles in my eardrums.

Oh there's two official dubs.

I'm pretty sure even the one piece fans hate the anime. So I guess it's manga or live action (or, I think they're working on a "one piece anime but good" too but I don't know much about that)
1
dotcha Apr 7, 2026
Oh is the live action..."normal"? I also hate animeness, but most live actions I see from Japan and Korea still employ the animeness bullshit

Both the live action One Piece (as someone who isn't into anime at all) and Our Flag Means Death are great shows

Netflix has Sandokan The Pirate Prince, that is more Asia. There's also a documentary series on Netflix called The Lost Pirate Kingdom. It is basically Black Sails with expert commentary.

The other comments hit all the ones I can think of. One Piece really is worth it, and the live action is excellent stand alone or as an entry point. If you’re into table top rpgs, check out Pirate Borg, hands down the coolest and best pirate rpg out there. Their discord is lively and they have a spreadsheet of pirate media

1955 TV series *The Adventures of Long John Silver*. Has Robert Newton in the title role - the man who gave the world the "pirate accent." 26 episodes. Loved that shit when I was a kid. Edit: You can see him in 1950's Treasure Island on Disney Plus

Shogun……. Kinda pirate like

rahkinto Apr 7, 2026 +7
Pirate adjacent 💯 basically pirate.
7
GatorStealth Apr 7, 2026 +4
Pirate ships having all black sails wouldn’t make any sense. Part of their whole ruse was to try to be able to mimic a commercial ship to potentially sneak up on a merchant vessel and take her by surprise. Why advertise you‘re pirates in advance? “Raise The Black” however, meant the statement flag, and also meant the cargo ship crew were about to have a bad day.
4
HomicidalTeddybear Apr 7, 2026 +6
Not... pirates... per se. But If you just want to get a swagger under your legs and a nice tight mainsheet or three, have you seen all of Hornblower?
6
ebola_flakes_II Apr 7, 2026 +4
The Horatio Hornblower series is really good, and while the focus is a British Naval Officer during the Napoleonic wars, if i remember correctly there were some pirate encounters.

The Bluff isn’t a show but it was pretty good.

Apprehensive_War173 Apr 7, 2026 +5
Black Sails kind of sets the bar annoyingly high for this, so everything else feels a bit different tonally. Our Flag Means Death is worth trying if you’re okay with something lighter and more comedic. It’s almost the opposite vibe, but it still plays with pirate life and characters in a fun way. If you’re open to non traditional stuff, The Terror (season 1) scratched a similar itch for me, even though it’s more Arctic exploration than pirates. It still has that isolated crew, tension, and slow descent into something darker.

Fena: Pirate Princess is another...should be a shorter watch than One Piece 😁 Edit - jeez, I wasn't saying it was better 😂 must've pissed off the fans

Are smugglers and bounty hunters sufficiently pirate adjacent to count? Or "rag tag group of people on a ship evading the law/military"? Salvage hunting? In space? The Mandalorian, Firefly, Farscape, Dark Matter (the 2015 series, not the current one), Killjoys. The Expanse has some piracy going on, and salvage hunters. Privateers too, I think.

been_mackin Apr 7, 2026 +8
I just crushed the live action One Piece, it’s pretty solid but very much in tune with being an anime. Our Flag Means Death was good too, wish we got more of that.
8
Creative-Painter3911 Apr 7, 2026 +1
wait, is Our Flag Means Death cancelled?
1

Yeah like two years ago, there was talks of Netflix scooping it up but I think it’s dead in the water

There are most certainly black sails in “Black Sails”
6
Suspicious-Pickle151 Apr 7, 2026 +5
wait really? i watched whole thing twice and never noticed any actual black sails on the ships maybe i was too focused in the drama parts lol now i feel like i need to go back and look for them specifically
5
CrimDS Apr 7, 2026 +1
I want to say Vane and Blackbeard used them at one point
1
BMonad Apr 7, 2026 -10
There absolutely are, there’s even a scene where they introduce their new jolly roger flag. Several times as they approach an unsuspecting ship the captain yells something like “fly the black!” They wouldn’t be sailing around with it at all times and give themselves away to military ships, it was used strategically.

One piece live action or anime

Black Sails finished rather well. I can't think of any show that's gonna hold up after that.

dating_derp Apr 7, 2026 +2
The most notable pirate shows have already been seen by you or mentioned here. So I'll say something pirate adjacent is Vikings. They sail around, pillage, and sail away. And between pillaging they have their own problems to deal with. The first few seasons are especially good.
2
Underwater_Karma Apr 7, 2026 +2
vikings totally slipped my mind, I even started watching it a while back. good call.

There is NO WAY there is not a black sail in Black Sails. Guess I'll have to rewatch it all to prove you wrong. Oh well.

Shogun is piratey - pirate adjacent, as someone mentioned, and so is The North Water. I mean okay it's not at all but it's about a whaling expedition in the 1900s and stars Colin Ferrell and is a miniseries produced by BBC. It's wild.

For a very non traditional pirate show, Shogun
1
HorizontalBob Apr 7, 2026 +1
Jack of All Trades is pirate adjacent. Bruce Campbell is a secret agent and sometimes a swashbuckling Zorro-type hero in the 1800's in the East Indies.

Content_Geologist420 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Shogun. Not exactly a pirate show but the pirates are integral to the story.

Captain Butler - British sitcom about pirates. Galavant - not about pirates but features them prominently. People Just do Nothing - about guys who run a pirate radio station. Also, a shout out to Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists! which is a great pirate movie
