There's a good chance that they were doing more than just "mapping" the undersea cables and pipelines. There's quite a bit of speculation that they have been laying limpet mines under the cables so that they can detonate them on demand severing the undersea links.

The Yantar was hanging around a lot above cables fairly recently. It's officially "oceanographic research", but everyone thinks it's a spy ship

my god, when will this stop.
Russia is far more toxic to the world than Iran, let alone Cuba or Venezuela. This country's regime needs to be stopped, before it engulfs everyone in its tentacles. Unfortunately US president is already in there, it seems =// Even when Russia is supplying Iran with weapons and intelligence, Trump says for some reason that Europe is to blame....

Has it ever stopped or is it just too much in the news?
There’s a genocide occurring right now in Darfur.. it’s just not in the news.
There’s stuff always going on

Of course “stuff is always going on” but you have to admit that geopolitics in 2016 vs 2026 has completely changed

When I think about the 90's as being this post-cold-war utopian time, I try to remember also the genocides in Kosovo and Rwanda and plenty of other conflicts like Chechnya that weren't really top of mind here. That if we consider humanity as a whole and not as "western civilization" we are still very much figuring it out and taking steps forward and backward all the time.
And if you believe humans all have inherent rights, how far will you go to defend those rights? I think these are all questions we ultimately will have to answer in the coming years, whether it is during great conflict or great progress (or both)

Yep.. a lot is just perspective.. news headlines don’t have to govern what you think is only state of the world. A lot of good things I’m sure happening too.. it’s just the balance we each choose to consume & filter with perspective.

I remember there was ethnic cleansing in Myanmar and it got maybe a week’s report tops and faded out of news.
Same with the Tigray, mass r*** got a few articles then got shelved as a story.
You’re right there’s always conflict somewhere.

It wont stop. Ruzzia will never stop unless we transition into a "friendly" country. There was a lull from say 1990 to mid 2006(?) ish then it started up again. But during that lull we totally let our defences down... [edit] and decay under the premise the 'cold war was over'

Yes, we know pretty much exactly where every russian submarine is from the point they leave port until they head out into the north Atlantic, I won't give details but a combination of satellites, hydrophones and helicopters between us and mainly the Norwegians means that we have that shit pretty locked down.

Yes, the U.K. military is very modern.
They have multi-role ocean surveillance ships that patrol constantly. They also have autonomous underwater drones, submarines and listening posts. This isn’t the first time they have caught Russians snooping, it happens fairly often, the Russian military equipment is archaic in comparison.
Hollywood has played up the Russian military capabilities for decades which means folk vastly overestimate the rusted Russian USSR era hulks they have deployed.
The military isn’t telling the press about the Russian presence because it’s surprising they caught them. It’s a mild warning, or reminder, that they are being watched.

Why doesn’t the EU apply more decisive responses to Russian actions? Why are they so submissive.
21

The EU is not set up to be a very rapid or decisive body, except in matters related to the single market.
If it was, it would not have members as federation has not been a popular idea in Europe. The EU is very much a collection of individual states, each responsible for its own national security and with shifts in government. Thus, EU treads carefully on such matters, as it has limited authority both politically and legally.
Nor is EU the entirety of Europe, which complicates things even more.

Do you think that was worth it for Turkey? A fake apology for Russia to stop threatening the country. Unless you think that they genuinely decided to change their mind on the events years later and without any new evidence coming to light?

Push back to what extent? Sink a submarine?
1
dahungryfrog1 day ago
+1
Sink a frigate (if they don’t declare themselves and sink anyway if they are escorted sanctioned ships), send drones into their airspace (which they continually do to Europe). I don’t know how Americans have convinced Europeans to be so cowardly on this. Russia is clearly breaking airspace and waters to see the reaction and if the reaction is just “denounce and move on” then they are going to push further until they get a message to stop

Then let them take over Ukraine. Withdraw all support, secure your own borders. That’s the surest way to keep out of conflict. You simply mind your own business to the max.
By the way, I’m 100% pro Ukraine, just before you jump the gun. I’m saying what I’m saying to invoke people to think about what they realistically want to happen.
In my opinion, there is too much weakness on display to deter russia at this time.

Why would we let them take Ukraine when we can test Russian capabilities and our own weapons? It’s a great opportunity from a pragmatic perspective.

Confiscate and find evidence of possible wrong doing.
If they are laying mines to reigger later, the evidence will be there.
Check the ships records and then track its path to see if any damage occurred
