At this rate, the Strait of Hormuz is getting so crowded they're going to need the Royal Navy just to enforce a proper queue.

France and UK said they will intervene only when war is over, correct ?

Basically yes. Peacekeeping operation once the war is over.

It's a sufficient pretense
The goal is opening the Strait or securing passage for ships
But why would they send military ships if Iran permits passage?
Unless they want to have their ships in position, just in case

It’s very much a just in case. The dragon can control airspace very well. They are perfect for controlling an area like that. You would be hard pushed to sink a ship with a missile with a type45 sat there.

To sink the US warships blocking the strait

Is the war really over if you are sending your navy to enforce free passage. It’s just a new military operation when the US decides to throw up its hands.

I didn’t say it was over. I’m implying that they’re aren’t sending ships to help with the war.

I’m not suggesting you did. My point is the war won’t end until the strait is open. France and the UK are going to get pulled into cleaning up the mess. We can pretend there is an end, but Iranian hostility towards non US aligned vessels is a continuation of the current war.

KelynillMay 9, 2026

We can pretend that this doesn’t end with Iranian control of the strait if we want but that wont be the case without a ground invasion.
2
FedBathroomInspectorMay 9, 2026

It could probably be accomplished with a coalition blockade and pressure on Pakistan and others to choke oil exports.
The problem is no one wants to partner with Trump and I don’t blame them. Blindsiding your allies with an epic quagmire is shitty diplomacy, but at the end of the day letting Iran control the strait is a bad precedent.

Preparing for peace by deploying the warships is a pretty on-brand way to keep the Strait of Hormuz calm these days.

I absolutely hate the terms warship and warplane. A warship could mean the HMS Astute attack submarine, the 8.500 tonne HMS Daring destroyer, 4.900 tonne HMS Iron Duke frigate or the 80.000 tonne HMS Prince of Wales carrier.
A warplane could mean a C-130 military cargo aircraft, the F-35 JSF, or B-2 strategic stealth bombers.
The """warship""" in question is the HMS Dragon, Daring-class air-defence destroyer. That detail clarifies its mission.

Are they sending more than the HMS Dragon? France is sending a carrier strike group and this is all the UK can muster? I’m sure it will be effective, I guess I just expected more if they plan on operations in the straight.

The uk has two aircraft carriers, one is by Greenland (an operation with denmark agreed to send a message)now and the other is at home.
There's no reason to send them. We have airbases in the area.

That’s true, but the article was about the UK participation in operations in the straight, I would have assumed they would send more.

I don't think there is anything more that they can send right now other than the specialised mine clearing vessels, which I think are currently in UK waters.
We are basically down to 5 frigates, until the new ones finish fitting out, and they are needed in the Atlantic for Anti-Submarine work and as for destroyers there is now one with a NATO group in the Atlantic and probably one other that could be brought out of maintenance in a reasonable time frame but yeah things are really not great for the Royal Navy.
As an interesting side note we did give Ukraine two of our mine clearance vessels a few years back and as they can't get into the Black Sea they have been based in the UK so I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up going if it means they get more support back home.

the royal navy is relatively small to how big it was in the past, only a handful of destroyers and I think 3 of the 6 are in for refit and maintenance

UK is now getting suckered in. The usual pattern of Nato entering illegal wars is now emerging again. Uk is the first usually followed by France...
