I dunno this seems to be a problem for the west. to sit and watch these rogue states plan and start to execute their plans against us and not act as soon as they are discovered. you end up not fighting back until they are in your living room

Mate we've been playing cat and mouse with the russians since the cold war. Especially with submarine activity. The russians are constantly testing the navy in how far it can impede and every time we respond with e****** because we cannot start a world war. Most of these submarines have nuclear capability.

Did a World War start when Turkey shot down a Russian aircraft that violated its airspace?

That was a very clear violation though. Russia has never violated UK sovereign airspace: much like the submarines here they've always been caught on approach. They've been caught in areas that the UK does not consider meet the standard of a sovereign violation. This is an important distinction for a country like the UK that was a key founding member of the international legal framework that governs much of the interactions between states. It has a very strict set of rules of engagement and Russia hasn't yet met that bar to get an airplane shot down or - on this case - a torpedo fired at a submarine. I appreciate that this may seem a subtle (and possibly meaningless) distinction for some but the rules based international order is being tested by countries like Russia and only the US has managed to take the bait in a profound way so far. Even Iraq had a multi year process of getting a UN resolution (for example). The point being that there is a clearly defined process that allows time for belligerents to have a second thought and perhaps at least round the edges off warlike actions. It's important to the UK that this stays the case as its government believes it's at the nexus of the relative peace and stability that's defined the world since the 1940s. Losing sight of that is exactly what Russia is hoping for: a lawless planet where it can possibly carve out concessions from smaller nations (more likely in my opinion Russia gets its shit pushed in like on Ukraine but hey). There may well be a point where a line is actually crossed, and ironically perhaps it's the competence of the UK's armed forces that's meant these possibly legitimate (more likely bait) incursions by Russia have been interdicted every single time.

And that's why we went backing Ukraine the hardest before other EU countries joined in.

The Russians listen to strength and decisiveness whether they are Vladimir Putin engaging in brinkmanship or the average person on the street going about their daily business. They do not care about these wishy washy 'we see you and there will be consequences' soundbites and Putin does not care for international law. If you don't stand up for yourself you get trodden all over in Russian culture. Shithousing without forceful consequences will only lead to further shithousing.  The UK is sleeping in the bed it has made.

Guys like you are always sporting your ideas without the consequences. Using big words for what is sending your young people to get killed, means having people killed on home soil, too.

We did this exact same stuff to them in the cold war and we're definitely still doing it now, it just doesn't get reported on because it's all classified.

None of us were in an open war on the continent while doing this shit, you can trivialize it because they did it at peacetime.

You mean like when we were in open war in Vietnam?

Were we in an active war in Europe? Cause that’s what I asked.

What would acting mean here beside what they did? Sink the submarine and start a nuclear war?

"There has been a terrible accident. One of our depth charges hit a Russian submarine that was underneath our ship at the time. Um... Sorry". No, it wouldn't start a nuclear war, because both sides have nukes. There's not a human being on Earth that would order a nuclear strike, and see everyone they've ever known and loved obliterated in nuclear retaliation, just because a submarine filled with a few dozen strangers who knew what they signed up for died. Get a grip. I mean for Christ's sake, Ukraine has sunk numerous Russian warships far more expensive with far more crew dying. Remember the Moskva???
