It isn't just the people they've put in charge. It's the entire "let's go back to the 1300s" movement taking root in the US. It is fundamentally, inherently, corrupt and has aims to eliminate democracy and freedom in Europe as well.
Until literally every single member of every right wing organization, and every millionaire and billionaire that funds them are in prison for life, the threat remains, and if I were any European country, I would start actively sharing disinformation with the US, while establishing a more robust spy program in the US to better monitor the likes of the Heritage Foundation, AIPAC, and similar.

>Mr Trump was asked if he would reconsider the US’s membership of Nato after the conflict. He replied: “Oh yes, I would say \[it’s\] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by Nato. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”
He is a Russian asset now. As he was a Russian asset when calling for Bush's impeachment in 2008, after Putin-oriented oligarch Rybolovlev paid Trump $90 million for a Miami villa worth fractions of that (which he never visitied). As he was a Russian asset when in 1987 he took out a double-page spread in the NYT to attack US foreign policy after returning from Moscow.
Trump is every inch the Russian stooge that Orban is. The question is whether US Midterms will stand the democratic test of leashing him. Sadly doubtful, as they will have planned for this eventuality.

There are exchange programmes. We share staff with our allies for experience.
The UK will have plenty of foreign military staff working throughout the various headquarters. It's a key aspect of NATO/AUKUS. They learn how the UK military (sometimes) functions and visa versa.
For it's many flaws, the US military has a logistics wrap that would give Napoleon the biggest stiffy of his life. Plenty to learn, and a lack of a language barrier makes that even easier.

Also not like it's already been shown that feeding US sensitive information now results in it being leaked to the wrong people.
Ukraine in particular had long since stopped sharing intel on their war with Russia purely because of it.
Ukraine was concerned one of their allies was leaking their intelligence to Russia based on how they were reacting in the war. And lo and behold, after feeding allies with false information for a time, they found the Russians were reacting to then now fake information they were giving to the US. And subsequently cut the US out from their intelligence.

I wouldn't even say ally any more, given Trump's many statements hinting at leaving NATO, or at minimum not wanting to honour commitments, which would be as good as leaving. 6
LaunchTransientApr 1, 2026

The UK has been very tolerant of US abuse for years. Lest we forget, the Tizard mission opened collaboration on the nuclear bomb project, which rolled the UK's nuclear program, Project Tube Alloys, into the fledgling Manhattan project - with the understanding that the US would share the technology once it was finished.
The US slammed the door shut and ended information sharing once they had a nuke, and only reopened collaboration in 1958 after the UK proved they didn't need the US to develop their own nukes and could even keep pace in terms of technology.
And this is not the only case of America pulling a fast one on the UK.

Frankly, I can't think of a single time the "special relationship" we supposedly share with the United States has benefitted us in any way. It's always seemed to be the thing to trot out whenever the US wants a favour, and conveniently forgotten again once the US might be expected to reciprocate in any way.
Lest we forget, the USA made us pay back the cost for men and material used in World War 2, and gave us significantly worse repayment terms than Germany.

33
blackstone17Apr 1, 2026
+17
Yep. They've internally destroyed the elements of the United States of America, which is evident how they treat red states as opposed to blue states because red states are, to them, a part of the Confederate nation. They are birthing the Confederate nation in the womb of America's political offices like a teratoma, half-baked and fully incompetent. January 6th was them crossing the Rubicon. When they let Trump run again, I knew from day one that King Robert Baratheon was dead and King Joffrey would reign. And if you think about it, Russia and Israel would absolutely have a vested interest in aiding the transmogrification of the USA into the Confederacy as we see this morning this regime announced they are considering leaving NATO. This is also why the Epstein files have seen no consequences, the Confederate nation has deemed it a nationally protected secret and the cost of establishing a revival of a nation. This is also why they don't uphold the constitution because they don't agree that it applies to their Neo Confederacy. This regime is a trojan horse who used "patriotism" to invade and lay siege to the USA in hopes of the Confederacy rising from its ashes. Sorry for ranting
17
Lurking_nerdApr 1, 2026
+1
It’s not a rant. You’re just seeing the cold, hard, reality of what is going on. The Confederacy using the Constitution, with its powers & limitations, to morph the United States into the Confederate States.
It’s exactly what Hitler & the Nazis did after their failed insurrection. Came back, voted back into power, and the rest is history. It’s happening again & the inertia is too much to stop or slow down on its own.
Unfortunately, Americans at large would most likely go along with it all as long as their day to day is mostly uninterrupted or not inconvenienced. I would be more surprised if actual minutemen groups formed and began fighting back against the fascists government & its partners.

21
YaaaaarrrrrrrrrApr 1, 2026
+20
The whole universal healthcare argument is nonsense anyway.
European countries pay a larger proportion of their income in tax. That’s what pays for things. Something like 13% points more than average than in the US.
And we spend less per person on healthcare that Americans do. It’s not the US supporting our healthcare, it’s just our system doesn’t have a massive middle man routinely f****** over and bankrupting families.
All America has to do is have an adult conversation with itself, realises socialised healthcare is no different than private insurance, and that it is more efficient per dollar spent - because there’s no insurance companies taking the crème - all money gets spent on the healthcare.
Bonus points for realising you can still go private, just as you can in Europe!
The average American would be better off with socialised healthcare. But the right has vilified any public spending for so long, that you think the original anti-communist Cold War was still at its height.

I'm a Brit living in Texas, so I have first hand experience of both systems.
I would argue that taxation is a red herring. It's common in the US to be paying for health insurance, which isn't a tax per se, but when it's $800 a month, and you have no option whether or not to pay, then let's be honest, it's effectively a tax.
I much prefer the UK system of paying "more tax," but actually having a higher standard of living, and free healthcare.

What is hilarious is that MAGA wanted no more wars, yet hate the fact that Europe are not helping in the new war. Pulling out of Europe won't massively impact European security, it might impact local businesses near the bases but who it'll impact the most is the US.
Firstly, they'd have to base and house all the extra troops, that is going to cost quite a bit but what is going to hurt the most is that it'll severely impact US power projection.
At the moment, US strike aircraft can be kept much further away and air to air refuel from tankers based in Europe to attack the middle east. If those bases go away, the US would have to base their aircraft in theatre, that has already gone sideways in the Iran war with a bunch of tankers and an AWACS being lost. The fact the three carriers are no where near Iran also shows the US military doesn't like the risk.
Be interesting to see what the US military says about this

The point of UK diplomacy is to get the best possible outcome for the UK. If the King and Queen going to Washington to make nice with a urine-scented madman gets the UK better treatment from that madman, then they go. That's their job. And the job of the diplomatic service is to judge what actions will best serve our country. If the diplomatic service reckons that Trump's official bottom-wiper will get his country an extra £10 billion of trade, then it's King Charles' job to turn up with the Andrex and the moist towelettes, and service the madman with a smile.
Insults are words. Diplomacy is about actions, and their long term consequences. Insults are shouted by losers; wise diplomatic actions are taken by winners.

Well put. Questions about the whole Monarchy thing aside, it's times like this (dealing with distateful regimes in the national interest) when it comes in handy.
I'm sure Charles will be biting his lip and faking a smile the whole time, but if that's what the UK Government has told him is required, then that's what he'll do.
Perhaps behind closed doors he'll try to educate the orange moron, but I think we all know by now that's a complete waste of breath!

The "tit for tat" response from UK intelligence makes complete sense given Trump's America First approach that shows no regard for allied partnerships. When you have a president who publicly threatens military action against Greenland and tells longstanding allies they need to "learn how to fight for yourself," this is the natural consequence. Trust takes decades to build and moments to destroy.

The US National Security Strategy released in December 2025, influenced by Trump, labeled Europe a bigger threat than Russia and China. How are our allies supposed to respond to that very bold lie? Lambasting our closest allies isn’t smart, but is obviously what Putin wants from Trump.

Understandable. The UK and the EU should get back together. In the EU they can have a seat at the table among equals, while their status in a relationship with the US will always be that of an underling. If rejoining isn't possible for whatever reason, then we should at least return to a closer relationship through other treaties.

I am not happy for the USA to be arrogant about the illegal war they started against Iran, and then tell allies to go get oil through the Strait of Hormuz. We must sideline them from our intelligence gathering. Remove US presence from all Australian bases, including Canberra Deep Space. The USA has given us grief with increased fuel costs, inflation and their stupid tariffs.

“Loose lips sink ships” was drilled into our Vietnam/Cold War era military brain for good reason. But his need to show off and impress others what he knows like a 7yo kid isn’t the only issue for our former allies, they also have to contend with the 7yo genius’s permanent breakup with the truth in any form that doesn’t correspond with his personal perception of reality. A lifelong boldface liar and embellisher, whose cognitive deficiencies are now being compounded by an aging brain frolicking in the dementia’s playground, was never trustworthy but allowing him access to sensitive information now would be fatally irresponsible.

Everyone is blaming this on Trump, but it's not just Trump.
The quote I heard on a Canadian politics show described it better. America is not the way it is because of Trump, Trump is the way he is because of America.
I know that not all voters voted for Trump, but enough did, and the fact that those people are Americans and think like they do is something that all of America needs to own. 77 Million people voted a known felon and liar. Those people will exist in America even past when Trump is president. The culture in America that allow those people to exist in society is toxic, and it's not ending with Trump's presidency either.
The way American democracy is structured at its most foundational levels is dysfunctional. Separation of powers does not work in a world with powerful political parties.
