His name was James Joseph Bulger Jr. His nickname was "Whitey", his middle name was not Whitney.

Drunkgummybear1 May 12, 2026 +85
That’s a name with a bit of [baggage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_James_Bulger) here in the UK. Proper double take when I saw that.

kms2547 May 12, 2026 +22
Oof, that's terrible.
22
Drunkgummybear1 May 12, 2026 +36
Yeah, crops up in the news every couple of years when Jon Venables commits yet another crime and has to be given a new identity again.
36
ABritishCynic May 13, 2026 +1
He has't commited once since he got recalled back to prison.
1
Drunkgummybear1 May 13, 2026 +1
I keep forgetting that 2017 wasn’t 3 years ago.

I was so worried my memory wasnt serving me well and i had to read the comments to see if its the same person and the death all them years ago was fake or something.😬

“…die in a bathtub”

sephjnr May 12, 2026 +1
I read up on how he went out. He'd have preferred the Cracktub.
1
-Dixieflatline May 12, 2026 -5
It's also not "Whitney", but I suspect that was just a simple mistake from OP, as well as not putting it in quotes. I don't think anyone actually believes his middle name to be "whitey".

Whatdoesthibattahndo May 12, 2026 +55
50 thousands, to be more specific. Wonder what the billable hours were to get it done
55
KingSwank May 12, 2026 +12
The Brits found that he had bank accounts there so hopefully probably not that many hours.
12
Whatdoesthibattahndo May 12, 2026 +3
"Yeah, looks solid, but let us just take one more look before you send it out"

Mad how long some of these criminal cases carry on for even after the person is dead Whitey Bulger was basically treated like a ghost story in Boston for years and theyre still recovering money connected to him now. Shows how much organised crime money gets buried away through property and assets rather than just cash under a mattress

mrlolloran May 12, 2026 +34
I could not believe when they found him. No more jokes about him being wherever they keep Jimmy Hoffa
34
sharrrper May 12, 2026 +17
He was 81 when they finally caught him. I had assumed for years he was probably dead, just from age if nothing else, given showing he'd been on the run.
17
PaddyMcGeezus May 12, 2026 +4
I remember visiting South Boston and my dad's stepmom would joke to him about going to down the street to hang out with his friend whitey bulger. Had no idea what she was talking about at the time n

Naturenick17 May 12, 2026 +3
I bet they had some stories!
3
Salute-Major-Echidna May 12, 2026 +2
Not just organized crime. My husband hid assets from me from our company in oddball countries like Liechtenstein and a couple Caribbean countries that I'm not even sure of the names even now. Regular laundromat.
2
tobbig May 12, 2026 +2
Ex-husband, right?
2
LiftedWanderer May 12, 2026 +10
I feel like you should have just kept this comment to yourself lol
10
Salute-Major-Echidna May 12, 2026 +3
Are you even aware how common this is?
3
FireDownBelow69 May 12, 2026 +1
James Whitey Bulger.
1
ThinCrusts May 12, 2026 +14
> most wanted. > 50k. Genuinely thought it'd be a few hundred thousands or a million
14
bpnc33 May 12, 2026 +9
How can you seize money from a man that's been dead for a decade?
9
Salute-Major-Echidna May 12, 2026 +5
He left accounts in a lot of places.
5
comfortably_nuumb May 12, 2026 +2
Spare change found under the sofa cushions.
2
jdflyer May 12, 2026 +13
Taxpayers of the metro boston area would like some of their money back
13
ThinCrusts May 12, 2026 +10
Its 50k, you'll each get 25 cents

steaklovingdude May 12, 2026 +11
Black Mass was an exceptional movie, I recommend it to everyone
11
blooztune May 12, 2026 +8
Of all the “Southie” movies, I think this movie captured it the best (I owned a liquor store in Southie 2004-2016 and had many of his former guys as customers.)

Naturenick17 May 12, 2026 +3
I had one of the authors of the book, D*** Lehr as one of my professors. Dude is an absolute badass.
3
Ganbazuroi May 12, 2026 +3
I watched it on a flight and holy shit it caught me off guard, hardass movie lmao Also what made me smile when I saw what happened to him, godawful a****** of a human being this c*** was
3
Total_Drongo_Moron May 12, 2026 +5
If only an equivalent modern day sequel could be published to follow the theme of Curt Gentry's J Edgar Hoover - The Man and his Secrets. Something like The FBI's John Connolly - The Man and his Secret Associates (including Whitey Bulger).
5
WolfCola723 May 12, 2026 +3
Oh man, he’s gonna hate this!
3
MrDundee666 May 12, 2026 +1
Pretty sure he brutally beaten to death in prison.
1
VaguelyArtistic May 12, 2026 +13
He lived in my neighborhood, it was pretty exciting.
13
moose098 May 12, 2026 +3
In Santa Monica or Boston?
3
HowWierd May 12, 2026 +9
I lived in Santa Monica at the time. I was shocked, because I was familiar with his story. But I dont know about being "excited."
9
moose098 May 12, 2026 +3
It was a weird story. I think he got turned in by an animal rescue lady who befriended his girlfriend.
3
Salute-Major-Echidna May 12, 2026 +1
Since he was an informer for the Feds, he never really had any punishment for his significant crimes
1
VaguelyArtistic May 12, 2026 +1
Santa Monica.
1
fenwayb May 12, 2026 +2
he was detained across from my high school
2
SinisterPaige May 12, 2026 +1
Did you ever interact with him?
1
VaguelyArtistic May 12, 2026 +5
Oh, no, it was just amazing that he’s been living right here for all these years. I definitely walked by his apartment a few times, though!
5
Ecstatic-Suit100 May 12, 2026
How so?
0
TurtlePoeticA May 12, 2026 +9
GASP! Thousands?!?! Too bad it took millions, over the years, to bring him to justice.
9
throwaway11229887 May 12, 2026 +15
I think all the money they spent was more about the murders than the 50k
15
TurtlePoeticA May 12, 2026
I know, but I find it a ridiculous article title. I'm happy that POS is off the streets, but isn't that infinitely more important than any $ recovered.
0
nuisible May 12, 2026 +9
> I'm happy that POS is off the streets He died almost 8 years ago at age 89 after being in hiding for 17 years and in custody since 2012. I don't think he's had an influence in the streets since I was a child and I'm 42.
9
throwaway11229887 May 12, 2026
Huh? I mean yeah but only one of those things actually happened recently. Are you saying you wish they made this article about capturing him (in 2011)?

matiakicoo May 12, 2026 +2
UK taxman finally caught up to Whitey Bulger's miniame
2
510Goodhands May 12, 2026 +1
No this is Whitney, his little known cousin! /s
1
WARxxPIGG May 12, 2026 +2
that dude died like ten years ago?
2
drfunkenstien014 May 12, 2026 +2
They should update the end of Black Mass to include how he died, because it was pretty notable.
2
Ganbazuroi May 12, 2026 +1
Those mob guys don't forget shit it seems lmao
1
JMDeutsch May 12, 2026 +2
UK must be hard up for money if £50,000 seizure is a headline.
2

Automatic-Echidna870 May 12, 2026 +5
Time to go after the billionaires please
5
PigFarmer1 May 12, 2026 +1
Has anyone informed the FBI that Bulger died years ago? lol
1
rightwingcrimespree May 12, 2026 +1
Maybe read the article? If that's too much to ask, then just read the first two letters of the title.
1
FixerQuick May 12, 2026 +1
Hopefully they meant thousands of millions or some shit, because otherwise this headline is comical, LOL. "Authorities have retrieved $2,590.23 from Whitey Bulger."
1
TheRamblerX May 12, 2026 -2
Are they going to put it in the museum along with everything else they "seized"?
-2
GodsBicep May 12, 2026 -2
Just like all the museums in the US with stolen artifacts? Give it a rest lmao
