Ukraine accuses Russia of breaking unilateral ceasefire
The Russian strikes came just hours before a unilaterally proposed Ukrainian ceasefire and days before Russia itself intends to observe a ceasefire. Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned "cynical, vile" attacks by Russia.

Some people in the comments don't seem to have the full context. This is about the unilateral ceasefire Russia declared for May 9th. It's silly to have Russia be able to declare timeout whenever it feels like it, so this is allowing Ukraine to say "we declared a unilateral ceasefire and you kept firing at us so don't expect us to follow your unilateral ceasefires".
3117
ollervo100 May 6, 2026 +854
Exactly. There has not been a ceasefire negotiated by both parties.
854
CasinoNdnOk May 6, 2026 +154
Yea thats what the word unilateral would let us know.

Try to understand the context of the thread. They’re explaining it to those who don’t get it.

Why help people understand when you can be rude to strangers instead?

Niblolkik 6 days ago +5
Russia can say whatever it wants. If it declares a ceasefire it can expect Ukraine to abide by it, but at the same time Russia will violate it without consequence.
5
Dangaard May 6, 2026 +328
This is even funnier. It's not the Russian unilateral ceasefire. It is planned for May 8-9 and hasn't started yet. What is being broken is the Ukrainian preventive unilateral counter-ceasefire declared for May 5-6. The reason it's done is clearly to say "you didn't respect our unilateral ceasefire back then, and we aren't going to be bound by yours" some time later.

vkarabut May 6, 2026 +175
In theory, Russia could simply agree to a four-day ceasefire and hold its parade. But apparently, going four days without committing war crimes is too much to ask.
175
dw82 May 6, 2026 +69
In theory Russia could remove all its troops and civilians from temporality occupied Ukraine and achieve a permanent ceasefire.
69
A_Poor_Miser 6 days ago +6
Yeah but then they'd have to deal with all the ethnic minorities they hate that won't stop having children.
6
BigBenStl May 6, 2026 +97
Holy c***, that is actually brilliant. Smart move by Ukraine to be able to keep the moral high ground.
97
Quazimojojojo May 6, 2026 +64
They've been taking hits and giving up opportunities in order to maintain the high ground pretty much from day 1.  They're very, very good at it after 4 years of practice
64
frickindeal May 6, 2026 +24
I'm continuously amazed just how competently their government has handled a full invasion by what was ostensibly the second most powerful military in the world. I realize they've had a lot of help, but to be at essentially a standstill after four years is remarkable and they seem to make the smart decisions again and again.
24
Lucky_Platypus341 May 6, 2026 +27
They had very little help the first weeks when the world was expecting Russia to roll over them -- that was all Ukraine grit. Also impressed with managing the frustration of fighting an asymmetric war with their hands tied (primarily by the US) saying they couldn't attack Russian soil or risk losing support. Now that they are free to target Russia, the game has changed.
27
b3nz3n 6 days ago +4
Keeping the moral high ground against russia is near impossible to fail.
4
Wise-Jury-4037 May 6, 2026 +40
It is even more funnier than that. The other party cannot "break" unilateral ceasefire, it's just a blame game. "I decided to quit smoking, but your smoking made me smoke again!"
40
Bitter_Tea442 May 6, 2026 +24
It is going to be even funnier when Putin's body double is shitting bricks when drones are attacking the tank-less Moscow military parade in a couple of days.
24
Dragonyte May 6, 2026 +5
All you did was reword OP's comment... Actually, your post and your history look suspiciously like AI.
5
FaderJockey2600 May 6, 2026 +7
The Ukrainian ceasefire wasn’t for May 5-6; it started in the night of 5-6th May and was meant to last until the 9th at least.
7
CmdrJonen 6 days ago +1
I mean, Ukraine could just have pointed to Russias unilateral Easter ceasefire, which Russia broke at more than seven and a half thousand separate instances. But hey did give them a chance: Respect our ceasefire, we'll respect yours.
1
paintress420 May 6, 2026 +29
Hijacking’s to say the ruzzian terrorists struck a KINDERGARTEN!!!!! Last night. Killed children. After demanding the ceasefire so their deflated parade is safe for the war criminals in red square. 🟥
29
WLCLINAJQZY May 6, 2026 +1
From what I’m understanding they’re basically giving karma to Russia for never keeping there word ?

Russia is just begging to get that military parade bombed...
1055
Vassortflam May 6, 2026 +387
I think Ukraine will hit completely different targets because all of Russias air defence/focus will be on Moscow.
387
Ok_Turnover_1235 May 6, 2026 +176
Yeah, hitting the parade would be a tactical blunder, no point making a show when you could cripple their future war efforts instead.
176
Impossible-Dealer421 May 6, 2026 +129
I would beg to differ, it would be a huge hit on morale in moscow. If I was a staunch Putin lover in Moscow and we were being bombed on Victory day, I would take my government heavily in question
129
Revierez May 6, 2026 +189
No. If you were a staunch Putin lover and got bombed on Victory Day, you'd be angry at Ukraine and call for immediate escalation. Terror bombing never works. Long-term wars with no end in sight damage morale. Direct attack just strengthens it.
189
CptMcDickButt69 May 6, 2026 +80
If i'd be ukraine i'd go for 3 flys with one clap: "bomb" the parade with drones dropping hundreds of thousands of leaflets. \- Show them Ukraine is able to bomb (but chooses not to) \- Show Ukraine is fighting against the government and not the people \- Make russia waste nerves and AA on striking some of those drones down which dont even pose a threat and even help getting those leaflets everywhere while disrupting the parade. For more military genius, zelensky can call me anytime <3

Hello fellow generals I have arrived to partake in our high level discussion regarding strategy and warfare for Ukraine
51
FireTyme May 6, 2026 +19
my armchair is the biggest therefore you all should listen to me
19
BOIBOIMAD May 6, 2026 +10
True, if it works, it'd be amazing, but it'd be difficult to pull off. If you send a large amount of drones at the parade, Russia will shoot at least some down, and the debris is still going to do some damage. It'd be hard to have a completely harmless stunt. In the meantime, Ukraine absolutely should keep threatening to bomb the parade, while actually attacking other militarily more relevant targets on the day. I think that's what they did in previous years anyway.
10
Jeovah_Attorney May 6, 2026 +12
How do you escalate from a total war where you happily bomb civilians and civilian infrastructures nonstop? Like what’s the step beyond that?
12
Harnellas 6 days ago +5
I think they meant it might generate more support for the war, which would mean maybe more enlistment and less headaches for Putin.
5
Technical-Phrase-690 May 6, 2026 +7
Escalate how? Mobilization, perhaps. But that would probably be the domino that collapses the Russian home support hence why putin has been reticent to call for a full mobilization. Bomb the parade make putin look weak, its a military target.
7
StaysAwakeAllWeek May 6, 2026 +6
They are already doing that and have been for years. Russia has already escalated to the maximum they are capable of escalating to **and there is nothing further they can do** Let them b**** and whine and talk about escalating as much as they like. The only way this war ends is with putin's removal or death, and the only way that happens is by making the population so fed up with the war that they finally stand up for themselves for once. Repeatedly embarrassing Russia on the world stage is a good way to make progress.
6
Impossible-Dealer421 May 6, 2026 +11
They are the ones to violate their own ceasefire to have their parade right?
11
Revierez May 6, 2026 +9
I'm not arguing the ethics of it. I'm just telling you that's not how human psychology works.
9
Old_Leopard1844 May 6, 2026 +10
Escalate with what and what army? What, you think they're gonna nuke Ukraine over it?
10
Tier0001 May 6, 2026 +16
The whole premise makes no sense tbh. "Staunch Putin lovers will only get more mad at Ukraine!" and what? They're already in a war with Ukraine, what are they gonna do? Declare war 2.0? Attack more civilians? Attack more civilian infrastructure? They're already doing all that nonstop. General mobilization isn't going to magically become popular because Putin's little parade got bombed. At most what will happen is his little parade will be cut short, he'll mouth off some more nuclear threats, and everyone will move on. All this nonsense the last 4 years with "if Ukraine did this, it just gives Putin a reason to escalate", like they've already escalated, Ukraine didn't do anything to make that happen and they escalated anyway. It's already there. If Ukraine bombing a good chunk of their oil infrastructure didn't do it, bombing their parade won't either.
16
Trisa133 May 6, 2026 +2
Escalate with a much larger draft. That'll change their minds real quick.
2
Zandonus May 6, 2026 +3
The civilians seem to be only mildly discontent with their entire military-industrial complex being dismantled one facility by one. You're right- doing anything in the Moscow area in these days would be a silly move.
3
JaVelin-X- May 6, 2026 +7
"morale in moscow" yes but that has little value among people who are complacent and enabling the government
7
Ok_Turnover_1235 May 6, 2026 +11
That sort of egotistical thinking is what resulted in Stalingrad. Morale amongst russians is already crazy low. It's ingrained in their culture, it's called toska. You would have to be an idiot to try and damage their morale instead of their infrastructure.
11
Idiot_Savant_13 May 6, 2026 +3
Best bet, fly within earshot ***of*** Moscow while hitting military targets beyond it, during the parade. What at first may sound like a victory day flyover becomes part of an attack that isn't hitting civilians, yet directly disproves Russia's theme of the war & the day. If Russia tries to intercept... well, no one can control where debris falls or projectiles end up. Simple, ethical, potentially effective while still being tactically defensible. Just my guess, tho - there's tons of factors I don't know about.
3
Reasonable_Gas_2498 May 6, 2026 +2
Just look at the bombings of London or German cities in WW2. All they did is to make people rally against the bombers.
2
GrynaiTaip May 6, 2026 +2
They wouldn't question the government, they would cry "Why is Ukraine attacking such an important parade? They hate it that we defeated the Nazis!"
2
Altruistic-Key-3355 May 6, 2026 +3
could send single drone
3
ashurbanipal420 May 6, 2026 +2
Better to let them enjoy it while a half dozen more refineries start to burn because their air defenses are now protecting a parade.
2
BalodyaMan May 6, 2026 +5
Exactly. If Ukraine will fire swarms of drones to every oil refinery Russia has imagine the headlines: Putin welcomes a parade while the thick black smoke of fires at oil facilities covers Russia.
5
SpiroG May 6, 2026 +3
Exactly, just ignore Moscow entirely and absolutely smash all their oil and ports and factories. Not "we launched 100 drones and shit's on fire, yo". No, launch 500, launch 1000. Leave only craters and rubble, completely annihilate their means of production and make them sweat.

Ukraine can't afford to hit civilian targets. It would significantly impact their ability to raise funds internationally. They would have to be pretty clever with how they do it
7
-drunk_russian- May 6, 2026 +1
I hope Ukraine demolishes more Russian refineries.
1
Benur21 6 days ago +1
Or maybe Moscow knows this and won't put their air defense/focus there.
1

They already did, almost all their pantsir systems are in and around Moscow right now. They are not taking chances with this one. Propaganda is most important.

142

He already is. Most likely one of his body doubles will attend the event while he stays in bunker
48
forestNargacuga May 6, 2026 +29
They should let a bunch of drones with Ukrainian flags attached to them fly in cycles above the parade
29
Muted-Tradition-1234 May 6, 2026 +10
Best would be to fire lots of dummy drones at Moscow: the Russians will "over-defend" Moscow (who wants to face an unhappy Putin?)- so will fire everything they have /waste missiles on incoming drones.
10
diabloenfuego May 6, 2026 +2
Shit on his parade until he shits himself. This shit's gonna be good!
2
cyclinator May 6, 2026 +12
They cancelled to show the military equipment right? They dont have enough.
12
Quazimojojojo May 6, 2026 +2
Last year they rolled out literally a single T34 if I remember correctly. This year, is actually just no military vehicles.  They're basically all gone. 50 years of Soviet stockpiling, spent in less than 5 years of war.  There's a few scraps here and there of course, but it's a pittance compared to the pre war stockpiles. And everything that was considered "good enough to keep and fix instead of scrap" by any county not desperate, has been gone for a year or 2 now.
2
Additional_Dog2750 May 6, 2026 +6
The biggest PR win for Ukraine would be to just drop manure on the parade without any civilian casualties. The embarrassment for the regime would be monumental while Ukraine still displayed humanity in their actions (unlike Russia).
6
Quazimojojojo May 6, 2026 +1
Or paint.  If they could hit Putin with a paintball gun drone, that would be the ultimate power move.
1
Jordan_Jackson May 6, 2026 +3
Except Ukraine won't bomb the parade because that serves zero purpose. They will probably hit other targets that do serve a purpose however.
3
GruuMasterofMinions May 6, 2026 +3
we need a go-fund-me just for that
3
Bale_Fire May 6, 2026 +2
In previous years Russia has displayed prisoners of war at some of these parades, probably to dissuade against Ukraine performing any airstrikes. I wouldn't be surprised if they do that again (assuming they still have any captives left)
2
janck1000 May 6, 2026 +1
Of course they are. They said that if UA dusrupts the parade, the centre of Kiev will be heavily bombed. And that's what Russia, as a terrorist state, wants.
1
bernheavy May 6, 2026 +1
Do it
1
hildenborg May 6, 2026 +1
There is no valuable strategic target in that parade. The only valuable target there is Putin, but that is probably just a body double.
1
verticon1234 May 6, 2026 +1
Fingers crossed!
1
frenzyguy May 6, 2026 +1
They should not, russia will jam pack the parade with civilians.
1
Cellari May 6, 2026 +1
There is no strategic reason to attack the parade, other than attacking morale. BUT if Ukraine attacks key points before and during the parade non-stop, it will be both a strategic and moral win. Assuming people in Moscow will hear about the attacks and losses, watching the parade wondering where this is all going.
1
woodpaulusgnome May 6, 2026 +295
Let’s hope that the parade is covered by so many Russian anti aircraft batteries that Ukraine can pick and choose what targets they will turn into rubble.
295
Puzzleheaded-Pen4413 May 6, 2026 +69
I think it actually will, can't wait for some more refinery hits!
69
WorgenDeath May 6, 2026 +25
Yup, it's what they did last year, make Russia scared they'll hit the parade, then hit a bunch of much more valueable military and energy targets instead while they are lightly defended.
25
Zhukov-74 May 6, 2026 +16
Holding a military parade during a war is absolutely insane on so many levels. Every piece of equipment that is present at the parade is one less on the frontline.
16
Lucky_Platypus341 May 6, 2026 +7
Reportedly they're not using much equipment in the parade. I wonder if that is also to make the parade less of a valid military target.
7
WorgenDeath May 6, 2026 +6
Probably why it's being reported that there will be bo tanks or missiles in the parade this year.
6
Zantej 6 days ago +2
Probably because there are no tanks or missiles in Russia anymore.
2

mahayanah May 6, 2026 +4
I don’t think they reasonably have the time now to redeploy any significant quantities antimissile/drone defences that they hadn’t intended to move already. It’s either already open season on recently undefended targets (less likely), or Russia simply hasn’t redeployed their assets to Moscow and by declaring their unilateral ceasefire/threatening retaliation on Kiev, are hoping Ukraine abstains from targeting the parade (more likely IMO). Both sides have so far avoided striking their capital cities iconic, historic cultural buildings and centres, and considering the VD Parade passes right through the heart of Moscow, I personally belive Ukraine should abstain from attacking it directly, because the response on Kiev‘s cultural centres could be devestating. Instead Ukraine should target positions around Moscow, on all sides. The message is the same - Russians are not protected by Putin’s regime - but it avoids damaging each nations heritage.
4
paranoidindeed 6 days ago +1
Didn’t Russia bomb Lviv city center?
1
mahayanah 6 days ago +1
I honestly don’t know what they’ve hit. But I haven’t heard much about either side striking culturally-significant targets. Hospitals, schools, nuclear power plants are all fair game to Russia, but they draw the line at kremlins and cathedrals.

Russia currently threatens a rocket barage over kyiv if anything happens on the 9th, but seeing as Russia's threats are usually hollow I'll give it a 50/50 Ukraine would just use the occasion to make a point.
41
NecessarySudden May 6, 2026 +105
There will be missiles flying at Kyiv no matter what, its russians. They'll coming up with excuses why they had to "retaliate" afterwards. You're not retaliating if you attacking first, dumbass
105
Shockkdiamondss May 6, 2026 +39
Russia has been on full power against Ukraie for years now. Their threats mean nothing now. The question is if Ukraine will go for trolling the parade or attacking valuable targets elsewhere, while air defence is moved to Moscow.
39
LojZza88 May 6, 2026 +10
I hope they do. Blowig up a refinery is great to bleed Russias finances, but I am willing to bet that if you dont live close enough, you wont even know about those due to the censorship. Doing a stunt over an event this public is a good way to erode Putins propaganda.. There will be news, articles, videos, witnesses... No way they could hide all of this from their own population.
10
BasKabelas May 6, 2026 +3
Seeing as its russia I doubt there will be news, articles or even public videos that arent taken down quickly. I think Telegram still works well in Russia so at least people can share videos there.
3
Shockkdiamondss May 6, 2026 +4
Russia has been cracking down on Telegram for few months I think? Everything is supposed to migrate to heavily state controlled MAX app. ...to the point that military communications and civilian support organising itsef on Telegram were hurt. This coinciding with loss of access to Starlink. Censorship and control over the war effort.
4
No_Conversation_9325 May 6, 2026 +17

Prediction: Spend all week threatening to rain on the parade, watch all the air defense get moved to the parade, instead attack every bit of military and oil infrastructure that is now undefended, and maybe that troublesome bridge.
52
Wuhblam May 6, 2026 +14
I mean, if multiple comments are saying this would be a good tactic, wouldn't it also be obvious to the strategists?
14
Blbe-Check-42069 May 6, 2026 +7
If it is and thus they leave the parade undefended, attack the parade. Just make the enemy scatter the defense and strike the least defended bit. Simple as.
7

"don't give your enemy a problem, give them a dilemma" So now Russia has to chose what to protect and there's an associated downtime in moving AA systems where they're not a position to defend anything useful and are potentially themselves vulnerable in transit. So if you were in charge of providing air defense under an egomaniacal dictator how you allocate air defences to minimise the chances of falling out of a window with a self inflicted firearm injuries to the back of the head?

Sending drones dropping pictures of dismembered russian soldiers and maimed Ukrainian children would be a better move. Firstly, it'd show that Ukraine *could* do far worse, but *hasn't*. Secondly it would show what russians are paying (dead countrymen) and what it buys them (dead children)

1
WorgenDeath May 6, 2026 +3
I doubt they will, why try to hit the most heavily defended place in Russia with little to no actual material value when you can hit loads of more lightly defended targets of higher value instead.
3
AskMeAboutMyHermoids May 6, 2026 +4
There’s a ton of value actually. Mostly psychological. If the rumors about Putin fearing assassinations and rebellions are true this would feed into not only that but also my the generally comfortable populace feel a little pain.
4
Top_Tomatillo_4261 May 6, 2026 +3
Yes, and no. The economic and military targets are best because the focus of repositioning air defense batteries for the parade leaves an opening. The psych war can only do so much until the people are motivated to be in the street, and even then there is the risk of an iran-type of violent feedback from the regime. Letting russia break their 'ceasefire' gave the excuse, and the threat, and the unknown outcome. I doubt kiev wants the reverb of screwing with the parade, but suspect other juicy targets may find drone swarms if they continue the long game - russia is trying to do a siege when ukraine has their fingers on the triggers of russian economy. Lifting of sanctions by usa hasn't done as much as folks think, when zelenski rebuts with 'ok, kinetic sanctions then'... those infrastructure projects take time to get things back to prior production levels after taking serious hits.
3

With most of the Russian AA now concentrated around Moscow, it's a perfect time to wipe out a few more refineries and production facilities.

Got a JDAM to spare for red square? But realistically, sounds like oil refinery day to me

Ukraine needs a swarm of drones for Putins parade! There is no respect either way. A swarm would let the Russians know that they're in a war with someone who fights back.

ants5678 6 days ago +1
It's a bad idea because it would turn more russians against Ukraine. Instead, Ukraine should focus more on valuable targets and liberating the homeland.
1
Bullfrog_Paradox May 6, 2026 +5
It's gonna be RAINING drones during the parade.
5
Mekdinosaur May 6, 2026 +5
They will not stop. They will continue until Putin is dead. This war is the only reason Putin is still the leader of Russia.

shockedpikachuface.jpg We all called it as soon as Russia announced it lol, the 3d chess move from Ukraine was also very impressive by calling for a ceasefire before the 2 day Russia announced

Sneaky sneaky

adds102 May 6, 2026 +4
Ukraine should absolutely send a whole load of drones to Putins pathetic little parade.
4
One-Bit5717 May 6, 2026 +4
RuZZians will make a surprised Pikachu face when drones rain on their parade in a few days

DahliaSkarigal 6 days ago +4
Russia **did** break the ceasefire. Fixed the title.

Spare-Pace4283 May 6, 2026 +6
First sentence in the article: “strikes came just hours before a unilaterally proposed Ukrainian ceasefire”. My head hurts trying to keep up with the media
6
chanchan_iceman May 6, 2026 +7
Are we surprised by that
7
Top-Confidence-7281 May 6, 2026 +3
Who could’ve predicted this?
3
StandardHyena4587 May 6, 2026 +3
Russian doesn't communicate with its troops very well, its no surprise. Many of the groups killed have found like one com device on them for like every 100 people

Unilateral ceasefires are not ceasefires. We call those "reloading".

What did you expect from those motherfuckers

BusinessBadgerDE May 6, 2026 +2
Russia either wants Ukraine to attack during the victory parade in Moscow or could be planning a false flag operation to justify mass mobilization. Lets see how it goes.
2
Yalrain May 6, 2026 +2
How am I not surprised.

JustChillFFS May 6, 2026 +2
Here we go

Niceguy955 May 6, 2026 +2
What is a "unilateral" ceasefire? Doesn't sound like any agreement was made. Otoh this sounds like permission from Putin to Ukraine to rain on his parade.
2
tortillazaur May 6, 2026 +1
That's the meaning of the word unilateral? That the decision concerning both parties was done without the agreement of one of the sides.
1
Niceguy955 May 6, 2026 +1
I'd argue that in the case of a ceasefire, "unilateral" means there wasn't one.

JackhusChanhus May 6, 2026 +2
I really hope they pound those factories and refineries on May 9th

Time to crash a parade baby

auroriasolaris May 6, 2026 +5
To all people who wants bombing of parade: it makes little sense to do so. It will be guarded, parade will have little to none military targets worth destroying and it will not even affect morale and propaganda beliefs that much since it's below low already. It will make much more sense to just allow Russia to keep their eyes on fasade parade and bomb more infrastructure inside Russia to cripple their economy even more.
5
MajesticArticle May 6, 2026 +10
1) you can strike Russian troops as they're packed togheter and unprepared 2) you can give russia the greatest propaganda blow in history (precisely hitting a parade in the middle of the capital)
10
GrandmasBoyToy69 May 6, 2026 +9
Nah, f*** russia. Bomb them
9
Standard-Contest-949 May 6, 2026 +3
Not to be a doomsdayer. But you can’t trust Russia, Iran or America when it comes to a “ceasefire”.
