Ukraine expects American guarantees for prisoner exchange with Russia
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine and Russia are preparing a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange that “must be carried out,” with the United States having assumed guarantees for the process. Zelenskyy made the statement during his evening video address on May 10.

Sorry, but American guarantees are currently worth about 2 cents.

true, but it doesn't hurt to call trump out for letting putin humiliate him.

calling this out gives big Z leverage to refuse shitty deals in the future.

That valuation is still higher than Russia's valuation of one of their soldiers.

Less, really.

Well when you factor in the nationwide penny shortage…

Few-Sheepherder-1655 2 days ago +1
So in the world of today, worth nothing because there is a national penny shortage.

The only American guarantee worth a damn is the guarantee that Trump will ignore any promise the second he can get away with it.

When does a Russian lie? If his eyes blink, it means he's lying.

Wait… they did the ceasefire w/o the exchange? Ouch.

It doesn't really matter what Putin agrees to given how blatantly dishonest he is. Same with the Iranians.

I'm pretty sure Ukraine knows that there's almost a zero chance of it happening. However, this works in favor of Ukraine. If the US can't pressure Russia on the prisoner exchange, Putin can't use Trump as effectively as before on stopping Ukraine on whatever major operation they're doing.

>I'm pretty sure Ukraine knows that there's almost a zero chance of it happening. Why do you think that? They have already exchanged thousand of prisoners before this. For example. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-russia-swap-193-prisoners-war-each-us-uae-facilitated-exchange-2026-04-24/

Its an invite to U.S. to continue peace mediation process they had committed in. Without U.S. involvement Russia only spams a blocking demand to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Ukrainian territory which will never be a part of any agreement signed.
2
bullintheheather 2 days ago +2
Ah so there won't be a prisoner exchange then.

Kumimono 2 days ago +1
Like, what kind of guarantees could they give? Putin doesn't work for the US...

Spare-Pace4283 1 day ago +1
Ukraine and Russia have done 1:1 prisoner swaps a dozen times already, without mediation or guarantees by third parties I don't even understand what US's involvement in 1000 for 1000 exchange is supposed to be? Why don't they just... do it?

It was the largest one by far. Ukraine asked for it as part of consideration for the Parade cease fire.

I'm sorry but Ukraine, unfortunately, got played again. No way US will go against their master.

Fredderov 2 days ago +25
Not so much getting played as that they are gathering receipts. It's been clear to see that the US has become a less and less reliable partner to its allies. But without moments like these and openly pointing at them the behaviour will just get worse faster. Now there will be a spotlight.

Burning refineries etc. would be more useful than receipts. The air defense was all in Moscow for the parade, now Russia had three days to move it back.
1
Aedeus 2 days ago +8
How'd they get played exactly? POW exchange or not, Russia looks incredibly weak after having to make a deal and get "permission" to have the celebration.

They sucked up being bombed on the European Victory day (May 8), yet allowed Putin to have his f****** kink parade on the 9th in hope of prisoners exchange (promised by the USA); and today Putin said that "Ukraine is not ready for prisoners exchange", broke the ceasefire and killed Ukrainians.
12
Aedeus 2 days ago +5
The fact that Putin was "allowed" to do anything is a massive win unto itself. They also appear to have known that they were never going to accept the prisoner exchange, which sets up their ability to wholly reject future attempts by the U.S. to get them to stop bombing Russian oil infrastructure.

They didn't get to exploit targets that were exposed due to air defense being moved from those potential targets to Moscow to watch the "parade". Now Russia had time to move it back without risking attacks. Edit: Also, the "permission" is easier to dismiss as "enemy propaganda" than an air raid alert or (turns out there *was* an actual parade, just without tanks) a drone crashing into tightly packed groups of soldiers.

It's hilarious that this happens over and over again! But, will they ever learn?

No_Conversation_9325 2 days ago +8
Ukraine? They know it all. this time it was the courtesy to the USA that they sucked it up. Still sucks.

They know much better than you and I that Russian statements mean little.

I don't understand the angle on this - America is the least trustworthy it has ever been, it can't be trusted at all What benefit to him is there to say this/want this?
1
xmuskorx 2 days ago +10
the angle is that Zelensky is trying to build the case for refusing Russian requests via America later. Now he can always point to the broken promise.

Yes, twisting the knofe. All parties know there won't be an exchange.

You never know. Trump may feel humiliated to call and berate Pupu. Not super likely, but even if the odds are like 5% you have to try to rescue Ukrainian heroes

Was Putin out of office in April when Ukraine and Russia exchanged prisoners? https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-russia-swap-193-prisoners-war-each-us-uae-facilitated-exchange-2026-04-24/
1
Werftflammen 2 days ago +1
There have been 65 completed prisoner exchanges, but an equal number have failed since late 2023, the June 2025 Istanbul negotiations, and several ceasefire-linked swaps in 2026.
1
kurQl 2 days ago +1
How does that show this exchange won't happen?
1
Werftflammen 2 days ago +2
Why hasn't it happened yet? Trump is not mentioning it anymore. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the exchange would occur during the ceasefire period. That was last week.
2
kurQl 2 days ago +1
>Why hasn't it happened yet? Ukraine sent it's list of PoW to returned yesterday. How fast do you think this things happen? Not sure if Russians have sent their list yet. >Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the exchange would occur during the ceasefire period. That was last week.  Also Putin's comment of this are worrying but all this has been less than a week. You are talking about last week on Monday...
1
Werftflammen 2 days ago +1
The ceasefire was a talking point for months. Who waits to pack untill you leave for travel? I hope for the prisoners it wll still happen, but doubt it seriously. Putin is like that, his word has no value.

Why does Trump call on all the mediators Biden was using on the Russian-Ukraine War-didn’t they get a settlement negotiated that the war has to go on until Ukraine burns threw our $367 billion gift to them??

Just ignore.. MAGA. Trump could shit down these guys throats and call it chocolate ice cream, and these dumbasses would ask for sprinkles on top.

What would American guarantees have to do with prisoners exchange? Really seriously as much as if love to finally see Ukraine win and their war to end, please do not cross the line. Expects, huh!

xmuskorx 2 days ago +5
Putin asked for ceasefire for his parade via USA. Ukraine asked for 1000 for 1000 exchange as part of the ceasefire that USA Mediated. Putin them backed out. so Ukraine is asking USA to pressure Russia to abide by the deal USA Mediated.
