On one hand the Iran war pumped the prices up for Putin; on the other hand it seems Ukraine is finally able to get away with the systematic destruction of Russia's export capabilities. Hard to say who the net w***** of the Iran war is going to be in the UA vs RU conflict, but fingers crossed for the people of Ukraine.

No one. Everyone is losing.

Thats why he said net winners, or whoever loses less. Russia was selling their oil at a loss, but this crisis turned it profitable for them. However, Ukraine has managed to hamper their ability to actually export the oil.

It's great for the transition to renewables tbh. After years of Greenies demanding an immediate cease of use of fossil fuels and being told by "certain circles of politics/corporate/government" in response "Don't be absurd, that would result in a collapse of the world order, we will need to transition gracefully away from fossil fuels over time." sure is popcorn worthy to watch folks mostly from those same circles happily blowing up all the oil production facilities with missiles and drones and shutting down 1/5 of the planet's oil shipping.  Watching Donald "big beautiful coal" Trump cause one of the sharpest upticks in the adoption of solar and wind power, and of EVs, and probably putting nails in the coffin of fossil fuels, is kinda funny when you think about it.

Said exactly this to my wife last night. We should all thank DJT for being so stupid that he helped the very thing he hates.

Probably oil companies. They just raise prices at the pump to compensate. Trump said the oil price going up will make the US money, it will make *us oil companies* money, consumers be damned. We'll find out a little while down the line that companies like Chevron are raking in record profits.

US. Higher prices for oil and overflowing order books for weapons

Even without Ukrainian strikes, the rising oil prices are not a pure profit for Putin. Yes, they are getting larger tax income from oil producers, but it will destroy more of their economy due to rising fuel prices. Their economy was always extractive, but now they genuinely only have oil and gas to export. So the rest of their production is internal, and shrinking - they import more and more from China, from produce to cars. Ukraine strikes compound on that, making not only tax income lower, but also fuel prices even higher.

The kicker is Trump telling everyone to buy Russian oil but then Ukraine blows everything up. And they say Trump doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Greenhouse gasses I'm okay with

Imagine how prosperous we’d be if there was no war and we were all trading with each other without blowing up our resources.

Well then gee wiz we wouldn't be human beings then!!(Honestly though, it's in our damn making)

It stops more greenhouse gasses from being emitted. Want to keep driving a 15 mile-per-gallon truck? Enjoy your sky high fuel costs.

Captain_Alaska Apr 9, 2026 +5
No, it doesn’t, the fuel is being burnt either way but vehicle fuel goes through emission systems.

This is what I was referring to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demand_destruction > In economics, demand destruction refers to a permanent or sustained decline in the demand for a certain good in response to persistent high prices or limited supply. Because of persistent high prices, consumers may decide that it is not worth purchasing as much of that good, or seek out alternatives as substitutes. My parents bit the bullet to buy a used EV and purchase a rooftop solar + battery storage to utilize with their EV. That means they're never going to be buying gasoline for driving again (except for rentals) and they will also be less dependent on the electrical grid that is largely fed by natural gas turbines. Electricity rates in their area has already gone up by over 50% in the past two years. The high gas price was the final straw.

Captain_Alaska Apr 9, 2026 +1
Right, but you seem to he forgetting that the demand destruction is created by setting the stuff on fire, which dumps all of those greenhouse gases straight into the atmosphere. It’s not that the fuel isn’t being used, it’s that it has been used to create a massive fire. If that had gone into a car instead of being set alight it would have gone through an emissions system, which is much cleaner than burning it raw.

Targeting energy infrastructure shows how much of this war is about logistics, not just territory.

LeFishTits Apr 9, 2026 +38
War has been about logistics since war was invented

Ukraine tried grabbing Russian territory a while ago, didn't work too well for them. Now there's drones everywhere the front is basically a stalemate and the only way to win is to knock the other sides' economy out.

Ukraine managed to grab a lot of high value POWs in Kursk, and they diverted Russia forces away from other areas of the front lines. But its difficult to say how successful or unsuccessful the operation was, because the fog of war is still at play.

Kind of an insane point to be at a war where we're fighting to destroy the others economies rather than soldiers.

MessMaximum5493 Apr 9, 2026 +12
Oh the destroying of soldiers is still in full swing, it's just that the territory stays the same more or less because it takes a lot of casualties to advance

Was WWI not a race to see who's economy crashed first?

Lugbor Apr 9, 2026 +2
Russia can keep replacing their soldiers far longer than Ukraine can. Targeting infrastructure wrecks Russian industry and degrades their ability to go on the offensive. If they can't pay for the war, they can't keep fighting.

Delicious_Friend_321 Apr 9, 2026 +5
Well that turnover is being put to the test Russians are dying faster than they are being replaced

Easter’s over. Plus it was an ask from Trump I believe, so promptly ignored no doubt.
