If this drone came directly from Ukraine, it would have to travel through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles and then travel to just 100 km south of Greece's border with Albania. While not impossible, that doesn't seem particularly likely. It's not so much the distance but the route through some heavily used waterways.

Ukraine is conducting special operations to neutralize Russian tankers abroad. I don't remember the name of the country, but Ukraine has an overseas base for special services somewhere on the coast of Africa.

ukraine operates them from Tripoli, capital of Libya. Libya is in a civil war, the rebels are backed by the Russians with Russian "Africa Corps" fighting alongside them. So the Libyan government gleefully accepted an alliance with Ukraine. From there Ukraine operates sea drones to threaten Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Mediterranean, and operates flying drones to hammer Africa Corps and their rebel allies in Libya.

Russia has claimed UK military logistics is assisting them with there multiple small bases on tiny islands all over the world. While I would not take anything Russia said at face value and they like to underplay all Ukrainian achievements, it would explain how they got military hardware all over the world so fast (you can't ship this stuff in normal customs).

Ukraine has a cooperation agreement with Libya, which includes training in the use of drones and the provision of coastal territory.

The long standing comment by the Ministry of Defence when asked about the activities of UK Special Forces is "We do not comment on the activities of UK Special Forces". Leaks from Poland and the US have both said we have UKSF inside Ukraine and while I'm doubtful as to whether they are on the frontline I wouldn't be surprised if some of the actions in Africa actually had UKSF troops operating alongside Ukrainian. Russia is not the only country with "little green men".
4
RCMW181 May 9, 2026 +4
In March 23, 2023 the US discord leaks showed there were more UK special force operating in Ukraine than all other NATO countries combined. Was 50 ish, personal so we're not talking crazy high numbers but the USA only had about 10. Everyone strongly suspected it was an SAS squadron or so. Sure they were just visiting local cathedrals.
4
Xenon009 May 9, 2026 +8
I would be f****** delighted if that were the case.
8
RCMW181 May 9, 2026 +6
They also say that the drone operation when they all launched from shipping containers to attack parked aircraft was completed with UK intelligence support. As in MI6 and GCHQ helped them do it, especially with the long range drone communication and connection. Again I would not trust it just because Russia said it, they want to portray all Ukrainian achievements as less and its less embarrassing for them if the UK did it. But I suspect there is a bit of help/support going on.
6
ramronepal May 9, 2026 -11
If that was the case russians would have retaliated against uk
-11
gracklemancometh May 9, 2026 +10
The UK sees this indirect military support as retaliation for "soft" attacks from Russia. The Salisbury Attack and all the digital attacks have left the UK feeling a need to take a swipe at Russia. Giving Ukraine pre-programmed missiles is a good way to achieve that. The UK doesn't perceive this support as an escalation but as matching Russian aggression. If Russia retaliates against the retaliation then the UK will perceive that as an escalation and will further escalate their own support to match. And yes, that's literally how wars that neither side actually wants start. But at the same time, the UK feels that if they don't retaliate they'll invite further transgressions.
10
RCMW181 May 9, 2026 +7
You fully understand why the don't retaliate when UK gives storm shadow missiles that directly target Russia, but you certain they would if the UK provided communication support? It's not even secret the UK, France and US provide targeting and intelligence constantly. it's not me. But the Russian ambassador saying this: https://news.sky.com/story/russian-ambassador-partly-blames-uk-for-ukrainian-drone-attack-we-perfectly-know-how-much-london-is-involved-13379594

TheSnortIncident May 9, 2026 -1
Yeah you need military clearance or very sophisticated illegal operations (which intelligence agencies set up) even cartels would struggle with that much explosives which are much harder than drugs to smuggle.

Sudan is one of them. That war is a f****** quagmire. You Russians fighting Ukrainians, the arabs, the Africans ... Jahjaweed & Sudan army, other African countries .. Ethiopia & Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda v both the warring factions and or siding with one or the other. It's like a mini world war. In the sahel too. Pretty much where you those Russian mercenaries... Ukrainians are there causing havoc

If my memory is accurate- Ukrainian and Russian Special forces have been training indigenous forces and also directly engaging each other in Mali

Thurak0 May 9, 2026 +66
> If this drone came directly from Ukraine It didn't. Ukraine very, very likely has a ship (or more) or even people on somewhere in the Mediterranean to blow up Russian shadow fleet ships (which they did months ago, for example).

If I had to guess, I’d assume Ukraine would deploy such a sea drone from another ship out in the Mediterranean if I were them. Easiest way to find themselves among the shadow fleets without raising suspicions i suppose

A sea drone like this could hypothetically be launched via a heavy lift airplane or helicopter.

Ukrainian military intelligence has a base Lybia from which it targets Russian oil exports in Mediterranean and also probably tries to counter Russian forces in Africa and Middle East. Russian, Turkish, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Chechen mafia with NATO weaponry and drones in a few years if not sooner. What could go wrong?

Now there's 200kg of explosives and 4 pages of handwritten instructions. The next time you will read that there was a nuclear warhead with swastikas and Zelensky's business card. Russia's playbook never changes.

So detonators the hardest part tomake were left behind really
-31
BoredCop May 9, 2026 +14
Detonators are not hard to obtain in many countries, because they're used in civilian construction projects. You can use the same detonator for TNT or C4 as for civilian dynamite. And there's thousands of small companies all over Europe with permits for obtaining detonators, so having some detonators leak out of that market into Ukrainian hands is almost a given. But civilian-use explosives tend to be less brisant and more bulky for their power than military explosives, and some of them are also more sensitive so they would be more likely to go off if hit by a bullet. TNT doesn't explode if you shoot at it with a rifle, but dynamite can. Since the typical defense against naval drones is to attempt to shoot it with small arms, you really want its payload to be insensitive to small arms fire so it has a greater chance of getting through to the target. My interpretation here, since whoever removed the military grade explosives had the knowledge to do so but left the detonators, is that it was done by someone who specifically needed a military grade high explosive but has no shortage of detonators. Possibly Ukrainian operators salvaging the one component they cannot easily get through customs or obtain illegally in Europe, from a failed drone that they had the GPS coordinates for but not the local vehicle or boat capacity for salvaging in its entirety. Those drones are pretty big, you aren't lifting one into the back of a van.

Why would Ukraine have included 4 pages of handwritten notes on how to operate it? Makes no sense.

I remember one landing on a Turkish beach (if I do remember it correctly) and it has the looks of a Zumwalt, but small so it's basically the Zumwalt's baby
6
LordSoren May 9, 2026 +21
Catch and release. It's far too small to keep at this point. Let it grow up and become a real kamikaze drone. Let it show Russia what it can do.
21
dlebed May 9, 2026 +32
The same news [reported yesterday](https://www.ekathimerini.com/politics/foreign-policy/1303182/ukrainian-magura-v5-naval-drone-found-off-lefkada-sparks-investigation/) claims the drone was not equipped with explosives. The incident happened the same day when Russian drones crashed in Latvia. This could could easily turn to be a false flag operation.

physicsking May 9, 2026 +6
Nice of them to leave the manual. Was the cover page stamped with the phrase "Totally from Ukraine. Don't think anyone else but Ukraine. Ukraine best country in Earth" ? Perhaps a little bit of a false flag, maybe? Unless there is more to the story, I don't think we push out operational stealth equipment with manuals on board.
