Or blue, yellow and white streamers from the drones and banner in Ukraine 'Victory!' 'перемога!' I'm not joking when I say if something like this was done right, it could be enough of a domino to start the collapse of Putin's regime . Illusion / propaganda shattering.

Leafleting campaign. Send a few drones down the parade route dropping little balls of cotton or paper that says "Boom" Murders morale without killing civilians and makes a mockery of the regime.

Britain (likely) did that during WW2. Germany made fake runways to give British bombers false targets, but they knew they were fake so dropped a fake wooden bomb on one. https://www.warhistoryonline.com/instant-articles/myth-real-wooden-bombs-fool-allies.html It isn't proven as far as I can tell but it's regarded as likely to have happened.

They should spray the entire parade down with concentrated moose piss and blue and yellow glitter (the piss will help it stick to everything). Nobody gets hurt, the parade is ruined, and they go home knowing they could be covered in guts and brain matter instead if Ukraine acted like them. Meanwhile send the real birds to wreck as many refineries, airfields and any other important infrastructure they can get at while all the AA assets are busy around Moscow.

There's little to be gained from actually bombing the parade itself though. Showing you COULD have hit it but didn't would be a massive international PR success for Ukraine, while targetting foreign dignitaries and all would still help Russian propaganda. Ruining the parade without killing civilians/foreign dignitaries would absolutely ridicule Russia without giving it ammo for its own propaganda. I wouldn't put it past Russia to plan a false flag operation on their own parade 'in case' Ukraine pulls such a stunt though.
24

"For the duration of the parade (beginning at 10:00 a.m. Kyiv time on May 9, 2026), the area of Red Square shall be excluded from the plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons," the [declaration](https://president.gov.ua/documents/3742026-59389) reads, including precise coordinates for Red Square. So clearly everything else in Moscow is still fair game.

GAdvance 5 days ago +43
Yep, classic military dilemma building, air defense keeps getting thinner and thinner fir the Russians and Ukraine is making it clear that they could attack the parade, but there's many many targets now Russia has to choose between prioritising.
43
ReggieCorneus 5 days ago +8
The most effective they are the closer to the border they are. Russia needs about one per 30km. The closer they are the more vulnerable they are to HIMARs, ATACMS, all the other missiles, artillery, drones.... The further away they have to put them, the more gaps there are. The only way to hold that parade is to put as much as you can around Moscow, and it is actually quite impressive amount of AA they have. We are in WWII numbers, except these aren't just flaks but missile systems... So, better than Hanoi, better than any city ever. The problem being that it is still not enough for low flying tiny drones because there still is no solution that is guaranteed to not let any of them thru. And Ukraine really needs only one to go thru. Note, i don't think they would ever target the parade, that is way too reckless. It would be one of those operations where you have no error margins. Now... Ukraine is NOT the only threat... There is also a domestic threat, and of course, Ukraine clandestine operations working with Russians, so the drone can come from inside Moscow.
8
marwynn 5 days ago +18
They should still strike. The recriminations and accusations and so on would be worth it, even if it does no damage.
18
TheScrote1 5 days ago +28
I’m just a dumb listnookor but it seems like sending these drones into Moscow right now is a setup to draw in more air defenses for this very strategy
28
socialistrob 5 days ago +9
There's also the question of what Russia is using to shoot down the drones. If you absolutely do not want to allow a drone to get through the air defense at any cost then it makes sense to use munitions that cost hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars per shot even on c**** drones. It might be a case where Ukraine is fine having their c**** drones shot down as a way to deplete Russian air defense munitions. If Ukraine was targeting Russian infantry in the Donbas the Russians would probably be more willing to save their good missiles and sacrifice a few troops.

they also take very little to become unusable because of structural integrity
15
TrainDestroyer 4 days ago +9
Exactly. Too many people think "Oh for this bridge to be destroyed it has to be rubble in the river!" If you can't safely send trucks across it under risk that it falls down, that Bridge is effectively destroyed, and possibly for longer than if you had completely collapsed it, because it both blocks a very good crossing point, and because you don't know what equipment you'll need to fix it (or possibly demolish and rebuild it)
9
socialistrob 5 days ago +7
Russia has already built a railway on the land linking the Russian mainland to Crimea so taking out the bridge currently wouldn't serve that much military utility. Russia also knows the bridge is a prime target so they keep a lot of air defense nearby which both makes a strike harder while also pinning air defense down in that area. I think if Ukraine were able to cut the land bridge between Crimea and Russia then actual bridge would become a prime target but until that happens there's not that much point in striking it.

Blunt552 5 days ago +503
Striking the parade would be an absolute disaster for Russia on many levels. 1.) People get aware that there is a war and that Ukraine is not exactly incapable of defending themselves. 2.) Scares the hell out of the little left they have for potential military draft. 3.) Brainwashed people getting a hint that the state media told a bit to many lies.

4) Many soldiers and high grades are free targets for drones.
19
jesjimher 5 days ago +30
But the line is pretty thin. If you ridiculize Putin, it's a success. But if a drone explodes and kills/mutilates 40 bystanders, people in Russia may support Putin because of the outrage, asking for vengeance. The smartest choice is hinting at the parade, but hitting all those actually sensitive installations that will be unprotected because of the fear.
30
socialistrob 5 days ago +11
> eople in Russia may support Putin People in Russia already do support Putin. There is no notable anti war movement and every day about 1,000 Russians voluntarily sign up to go fight in Ukraine. I don't believe Ukraine should intentionally strike civilians and I do think Ukrainian strikes should be based on military value which probably means soldiers in a parade isn't the highest value strike that said I think the idea of Ukraine fighting with one hand tied behind their back "so as not to offend the Russian people" is a losing strategy. Russia is already doing everything they can to win a conventional war and there is no resistance from the Russian people. If the Russian people get mad at Ukraine so what? They already think Ukrainians are Nazis trying to exterminate all Russians and spread homosexuality. This is a real war for Ukraine. They should strike the targets that enable them to hurt the Russian military and the Russian economy the most. Ukraine should also follow the laws of war as laid out in the Geneva conventions but accidental civilian deaths while targeting legitimate military targets is not a war crime.

All their air defence is around Moscow. While they can sneak a few in, it's hard and a lot get shot down. What they are doing instead, is hitting all the military/infrastructure targets in the rest of the country that is essentially undefended, and degrades russia's warfighting capability.

Yep. Making up the number, but the approach seems to be: If you have 10 000 missiles do you send them all at Moscow with a 90% interception rate, or do you attack targets all over Russia with a 10% interception rate

Recently Ukraine has been targeting Russia’s oil infrastructure. It is highly visible and is hurting the cash flow Putin needs to fund the war.

There was a video like a year or so ago of a Ukrainian drone flying over the Kremlin.

Ukraine is very aware of the 'Rally around the flag' effect. Every attack on something that isn't a military target needs to be carefully calculated to be worth the risk of a potential rise of morale. Remember that Bucha massacre was one of the reasons why Ukraine did not surrender in the first days of the war. Seeing civilians being slaughtered by the hundreds did wonders in sparking a will to fight and getting people to pick up guns. Its much easier to just keep focusing on russian oil targets and military facilities and let the economy self-destruct.

Ukraine wouldn't surrender regardless of the events in Bucha happening or not. It was the West who refused to believe in the atrocities the Russians were capable of. Ukraine warned about it for 8 years, but everyone just turned a blind eye. Source: am Ukrainian.

Who am I to tell a ukrainian what has happened in his country? Sure, you might be right on that. I still think that Bucha was the final nail in the coffin for early negotiations, though.

For what it's worth. I've spoken to quite a few Ukrainians about this conflict over the last few years and I don't think a single one has ever expressed a belief that those early talks could ever have succeeded. I think the person you're responding to is correct, Bucha signaled to people outside of Ukraine that the Russians were ready to commit atrocities to win. The people of Ukraine have known that for a very long time. Russia has been an existential threat to them since the formation of their nation.

An interesting dichotomy though is that when there have been Ukrainian drones shot down over the wealthy Russian suburbs the reaction from Russians on telegram seems to be "lol" or "now the rich know what it's like to be in a warzone too." There's a lot of schadenfreude from Russians aimed at their wealthy. Bucha was a relatively wealthy Ukrainian suburb and when people were massacred there Ukrainians at every income level were absolutely horrified and wanted vengeance I know it's kind of mixed comparison looking at telegram reactions to drones being shot down in Russia versus massacres of civilians in Ukraine but I also think it's worth remembering that Russians seem to hold much less empathy for the plight of other Russians.

Its for this reason (among others) that Ukraine should NOT strike Moscow this weekend. They should capitalize on all the exposed infrastructure this disttaction has created, imo!

That’s probably why they’re sending drones to Moscow now. They’re trying to make the threat to Moscow as credible as possible ahead of the parade so that everything else is as undefended as possible. While also reducing the sense of security during the parade itself.

Let's just hope they got enough for both and then some.

It’s remarkably similar to of all strategies, the one in the US Civil War, where a substantial amount of the Confederate army was protecting the capital of Richmond (why they chose their capital to be so close to Washington was dumb but that’s neither here nor there).  The Union under Grant decided to use that to its advantage and avoid Richmond while destroying the Confederate ability to make money and wage war where the army wasn’t, hitting plantations and the like rather than attack a fortified position.

> why they chose their capital to be so close to Washington was dumb but that’s neither here nor there Virginia was the economic, cultural, and population heavyweight of the south. Not just the south. Virginia was by a large margin the most populous colony when the US became independent. Of the fifteen US Presidents that preceded Lincoln, half were Virginians. By the Civil War it had fallen to fifth place as the north experienced more population growth, but it was still quite a bit larger than all of the other Confederate states.

Fascinating.  This didn't sound right to me, I thought that they had their capital somewhere in the deep South.  And they did, but apparently moved it to Richmond fairly early in the war.  Google says it was to ensure Virginia's allegiance and get the government closer to the war.  Maybe they had communication problems being far from the front?

they are not going to strike the parade, they are going to strike actual important targets that will likely have less awareness because of the parade

It would be great if on the day the just send a single drone that drops a stick with a Bang! Flag on it.

Dropping a few hundred Ukrainian flags over the parade would be kind of funny... or Pride flags.

They should hammer and collapse the Kerch Strait Bridge while Russia is focused on Moscow airspace. How glorious would it be to see that bridge come down at the very moment Putin is holding his “victory” parade.

Didn’t Putin threaten to use nukes if anything happened to his parade?
3
okhi2u 4 days ago +8
yup, if you threaten nukes 400 times in the past few years, and none resulted in nukes, how likely is the threat of nukes going to actually work this time?

Would be kinda funny if Ukraine used the drones to destroy the areas the parade is going to go across and they had to cancel it.

They should have asked Ukraine first for permission to do parade stuff. Ukraine is the one who decides.
