I imagine that with the parade being a perfect target, and with the Russian military therefore focusing on defending it, it’d be a perfect time for Ukraine to blow up a whole lot of other Russian infrastructure.
Whatever is defending the high visibility parade isn’t defending an oil refinery.
263
Flatus_Diabolic6 days ago
+104
Exactly. That’s my bet.
The parade is crawling with civilians and foreign dignitaries and the only target of value is Putin’s pride. Much as I like seeing that guy made a fool of, it’s not worth the risk.
Although my bet is they won’t go after oil - they’ve been doing that for months already, and it’s because refineries are squishy and it only takes one or two drones getting through the AA screen to make a major boom, and also because the cheeto’s Operation Epic Fail was driving oil prices up and giving the Russian economy a lifeline.
Now would be the time to hit hardened targets like airfields, military bases, and critical military manufacturing.

Fair is fair, Zelensky was *very clear* in his message. All Russia had to do was not be a d*** for 48 hours and they would've had their ceasefire.
For those who didn't see his message: *"As of today, there has been no official appeal to Ukraine regarding the modality of a cessation of hostilities that is being claimed on Russian social media. We believe that human life is far more valuable than any anniversary “celebration”. In this regard, we are announcing a ceasefire regime starting at 00:00 on the night of May 5–6. In the time left until that moment, it is realistic to ensure that silence takes effect. We will act reciprocally starting from that moment. It is time for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war, especially since Russia’s Defense Ministry believes it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine’s goodwill."* \- Zelenesky on Twitter

Yeah, I think it's kind of sad that geopolitics has sort of defaulted to being announced for the public on Twitter, but it's the unfortunate reality we are in. Zelensky handled this as well as anyone could possibly be expected to given the circumstances. Russia made this bed, now they lie in it and if they complain they'll look even more like fools than they already do. What little credibility and goodwill they might have had should disappear with this move, whether it will however is another matter.

Using social media ie tech is nothing new for geopolitics though. They once used radio and pamphlets to demoralise the enemy.
I think what's sad is the further rise of Orwellian doublespeak so that politicians and leaders get away with even more lies.

Attacking the parade itself? Considering it’s the most important day in Russia and Putin is in his weakest public position in over a decade… it would risk creating a unifying moment of solidarity. Could they pull it off? Sure, but it wouldn’t be worth it.

Yeah, you can play “we know that they know that we know that they know that ..” all you like, but it’ll get you nowhere.
Instead, we can look at the facts on the ground: all the coverage of the war that I follow - including the more reputable Russian sources - is saying that Russia **has** moved and **is** moving some of their AA systems to bolster the air defence around Moscow.
I don’t know which specific systems have been moved or where the gaps now are, but the Ukrainians likely have a pretty good idea because of the intelligence sharing they’re still receiving from the US.
Given that, what would the best counter-move for the Ukrainians be?
1
TheAngryGoat6 days ago

They should certainly launch several in that direction in time for the parade, to then divert to the real targets elsewhere. Just to scare the shit out of them, maybe even get them to evacuate their parade and their bowels. If putin dares to show his face there it would be great to see him run and hide too.
As much as russia deserves to have the streets of moscow run red with blood, Ukraine are better served taking out military/oil targets.

Russia has no real incentive to do this. If Ukraine strikes it they will say:
We asked them nicely but they didnt listen because they are Nazi's and attempt to use that to drive up volunteer rates.
If they dont strike it, then they say:
Look how strong we are, Ukraine is bowing to our will because they stand no chance against us, and dont want to strike their brotherly people.

Receuitment is still at full swing, but it is lower then for example during the Crocus attack.
They blamed it on Ukraine, and even though ISIS actively claimed it, there was a huge spike in volunteers for the war effort.
An attack on a parade which marks a significant cultural scar on Russians will absolutely get some more angry people rushing to join.

From what I read, there is an AA mass-up in Moscow during the parade, and Ukraine intentionally built up the paranoia by hitting Moscow a few days ago. Now the rest of the regions are less defended, so likely the drones and rockets will fly everywhere, but not at Moscow. What is even to strike there? No rocket launchers on parade, only meat that can be killed with far the cheaper FPVs in the following weeks.
12

Yup.
And striking a parade teeming with civilian spectators is unquestionably an act of terror too.
But that doesn’t mean the Ukrainians can’t strike elsewhere. This would be the perfect time to capitalise on the fact that Russia will bolster Moscow’s AA screen by stripping it from elsewhere.
If this is a parade celebrating Russias military pride, then blow Engels the f*** up instead.

> And striking a parade teeming with civilian spectators is unquestionably an act of terror too.
Not as long as there are valid military targets present. Then it becomes a judgement call as to whether the probable civilian casualties are justified by the potential tactical or strategic advantage. The laws of war never say or even suggest that one cannot blow up civvies, it says the **intended goal** can't be to blow up civvies. If it happens as a side effect of targeting the enemy however then that's merely unfortunate, but not illegal as per international law.

Uh huh.
Because Russia’s been fighting this war only one handed up until now and they’ve *tooootaly* got stores and stores of missiles just waiting in reserve that Russia could have unleashed anytime they want to totally flatten Ukraine.
Putin *wants* his glorious 2 week lightning war to keep stretching on without end because he’s well known to have a humiliation kink and he *loves* looking weak and incompetent on the global stage as his economy sinks further into recession and one ally after another (Syria, Venezuela, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Mali) collapses or turns away from him (and coming soon: Cuba, Kazakhstan, and probably Azerbaijan and a lot of Africa) while he sits impotently and watches it happen (but he’s not really impotent: he’s got all that military and soft power in reserve, right?)
But if you f*** with his parade, well, that’s just one step too far and the kid gloves will finally have to come off. Maybe he’ll do something really devastating like pay some more teenagers to burn a warehouse down.

Don't kill the messenger so to say, but it seems like that they are not bluffing now 🤷⚡️ Russian Defence Ministry:
💬 In accordance with the decision of Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire is declared on 8–9 May 2026 in honour of the celebration of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.
We expect the Ukrainian side to follow this example.
At the same time, we have taken note of the statement made by the head of the Kiev regime in Yerevan at the European Political Community Summit, which contains threats to strike Moscow on 9 May.
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the festive events.
Should the Kiev regime attempt to carry out its criminal plans aimed at disrupting the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will launch a retaliatory, massive missile strike on the centre of Kiev.
❗️ Despite the capabilities at its disposal, Russia has previously refrained from such actions for humanitarian reasons.
We warn the civilian population of Kiev and the staff of foreign diplomatic missions to leave the city in a timely manner.
