MGS2 was especially prescient.
>Untested truths spun by different interests continue to churn and accumulate in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. Everyone withdraws into their own small gated community, afraid of a larger forum. They stay inside their little ponds, leaking whatever "truth" suits them into the growing cesspool of society at large. The different cardinal truths neither clash nor mesh. No one is invalidated, but nobody is right. Not even natural selection can take place here. The world is being engulfed in "truth." And this is the way the world ends.

This is the true central message of Fallout's "War... War never changes". Obviously we find new and sometimes even fantastical ways to kill one another. To an outside observer, discovering the ability to traverse the sea or the air, or to harness explosions, or to temper metals, and quickly using them to murder others within our species... that's madness. But humanity is so... human. And for humans, war never changes, no matter what tools we invent to wage it.

> The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labor. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent. Even when weapons of war are not actually destroyed, their manufacture is still a convenient way of expending labor power without producing anything that can be consumed.
> The war, therefore, if we judge it by the standards of previous wars, is merely an imposture. It is like the battles between certain ruminant animals whose horns are set at such an angle that they are incapable of hurting one another, but though it is unreal it is not meaningless. It eats up the surplus of consumable goods, and it helps to preserve the mental atmosphere that a hierarchical society needs.

When you're a government profit isn't the goal, it's effectiveness for a given tax base. It's a real problem if we have to outsource a significant part of our military. Except the human shaped robot. The Ukrainians, working from real world experience, are using wheeled platforms. Meanwhile we’ve got high tech companies, one with Eric Trump involved, trying to develop human shaped combat robots. And the Trump involved company will probably get a Pentagon contract.
73
DixonLyraxApr 28, 2026
+61
Human shaped combat robots makes no sense. There's no practical advantage to a humaniform biped. Wheels are cheaper and more efficient. If they need legs then 4 legs are much better for a gun platform.
61
Swarna_KeanuApr 28, 2026
+38
In Terminator they were infiltrators, pretending to be human. (And given how many people treat LLMs as sentient ... ). Non-human shaped robots were around, in that fictional universe, too - but for different purpose.
38
osingranApr 28, 2026
+9
Not really, humanoid combat robots as a concept have some merit too. They can do all the combat roles other humans do: reload canons and mortars, drive or repair armored vehicles, sit in the trenches, they can have similar gear on them and so on. Which means, they are effectively interchageable with other human soldiers and can perform same duties together. Humanoid robots can interact with infrastructure intended for humans: climb vertical ladders, open doors, jump through windows - all of these things which are particularly hard for a wheeled drone or something like that. Wheeled robots can get stuck in the mud, they can't drive through rugged terrain, once they're rolled over - they will need a special mechanism to stand back up.
I won't argue that four legs could be better than two for stability and such. But something like this would also be harder to develop and probably much more expensive to produce. Besides, I think it makes sense to perfect a bipedal form first and only then try to create a quadrupedal platform.
9
Expert_Put_7492Apr 28, 2026
+5
The obvious practical advantage is all our weapons and armor are based on humans.
5
sadriceApr 28, 2026
+6
Our human armor is heavily limited by it having to fit on humans, we could probably readily design a better armored shape (I vote crab), and it’s not exactly difficult to eliminate the grips/stock of a gun and bolt it to a robot with a servo instead of a trigger. Needing a robot to be able to pick up human weapons and use them rather than using its built in weapon systems seems like a sufficiently rare tactical requirement as to not justify humanoid robots for the vast majority of combat applications.
And we should make them crab shaped.

Legs are definitely the way to go, wheels mean your robots are now restricted to roads and relatively flat terrain, and if there's a log or ditch in the way you're out of luck.
Though realistically you'd go with 6 legs for redundancy, that way you can lose up to 2 without being mission killed.
28
crazycakemanfliesApr 28, 2026
+13
A humanoid robot means it can interact with our world easier though. Open doors, climb stairs, hold weapons, use machines.
A 4 or 6 or 8 legged robot would still require some kind of appendage to grasp and manipulate human objects. And even then, it would struggle to sit and operate man-made machines.
There is definitely pros and cons to both designs.

There are ground-up robots and ground-up Russians all over the place already.
More robots. Good plan.

Remember that Ukraine did not choose this war. It was thrust upon them by the genocidal russian regime. Ukraine is fighting for survival. It needs to protect its most valuable resource.... people. And it's doing everything that it can.

The fact we have battle bots now is definitely a sign the big class warfare which would cull most of the population is coming.

It's like Terminator movie, except Skynet are the good guys. It must suck to be a Russian soldier.

This is good for Ukraine but horrendous for what the future may look like.

It's already horrendous.
This is simply countermeasure to not lose massive amount of lives. The zone where death is imminent is like 20-40 km wide, it's massive. When you try to supply your frontline troops you must be on lookout for drone swarms or drone ambushes.

The logistics of operating thousands of these remotely is mind boggling. They aren't autonomous, so humans have to make decisions for them in order to operate, right?
