God damn, Max Payne 3 had some of the best lines in video games. Soundtrack was banger after banger, too.

Tears by health playing in the airport was so fire when you played for the first time. You could just feel his path of destruction and death going to its peak

Sigh...time to reinstall

oh wow. And I thought it was just a "random" witty remark.

I read this in his voice.

Writers: "how the f*** are we gonna get some Playboy t*** in this movie set in a navy ship in the middle of the ocean" me: bravo

"But she's going to realize the place is empty and everyone's dead before she gets her t*** out!" "Uh, I dunno, have her close her eyes or something!"

mxcn3 Mar 31, 2026 +35
Shockingly that is actually set up. Shortly after they arrive, Jones's character suggests that she do the routine with her eyes closed to help with her nerves. It's still silly, but they at least acknowledge it.

McCabbe Mar 30, 2026 +312
I've never watched that flick. I've seen that scene countless times.

DND_Player_24 Mar 30, 2026 +188
Arguably his only good movie.

biophazer242 Mar 30, 2026 +96
No way! You can not dismiss Above the Law. Under Siege is a fun movie and it really benefits from having Jones and Busey in the movie really hamming it up but Above the Law was a really strong premiere film for Seagal.
96
Ozymandias12 Mar 30, 2026 +53
Executive Decision was also a great popcorn action flick, though I don't know if it counts as a Segal movie because >!he dies like 30 minutes into it!<
53
fozziwoo Mar 30, 2026 +59
the best kinda segal movie
59
filtersweep Mar 30, 2026 +17
That’s why it worked. Who actually wants to see him ‘star’ in a movie?!
17
mGreeneLantern Mar 30, 2026 +11
If Segal had anything to say about it, he would’ve survived. According to John Leguizamo, Segal didn’t want to come out of his trailer to film the scene and suggested that his character could have held the planes together.
11
Eternlgladiator Apr 1, 2026 +3
I still remember how hard they marketed that movie as a Segal flick and it was anything but. My jaw hit the floor so hard when they killed him off. It was a better movie for it though.
3
Ozymandias12 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Agreed. John Leguizamo is leagues better as an actor anyway, and he killed it in that movie

I'll watch anything prior to On Deadly Ground. But the OG's Marked for Death, Hard to Kill, Above the Law, Out For Justice and even both Under Siege movies I'll rewatch when on. "Anybody seen Richie!?"

TwoDramaticc Mar 30, 2026 +7
The DMX movie is fine, it has that early 00s action and style. Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold have a few hilarious scenes
7
slowro Mar 30, 2026 +3
> Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold have a few hilarious scenes They get some good riffs in the Cradle 2 the Grave too lol.
3
crazydave333 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Seagal's initial Hollywood run, culminating in Under Siege, are generally enjoyable action films. Full of cheese, but completely watchable. Under Siege is his pinnacle, absolutely deserving a place in the pantheon of 90's action films. On Deadly Ground is where his ego begins to take over. Decent enough action, but his didactic environmental speech at the end is utterly cringe and his ego begins to become off-putting. Executive Action is a turning point because it's a movie where Seagal's absence from the film elevates it. Exit Wounds is the last Steven Seagal film I consider even remotely watchable, and his filmography afterwards consists of increasingly embarrassing direct-to-dvd dreck, meant to be hate-watched.
2
breaddoughrising Mar 30, 2026 +84
I disagree. His first few movies were very entertaining. Their titles all were able to finish the sentence “Steven Seagal is…”. Steven Seagal is Above the Law. Steven Seagal is Hard to Kill. Steven Seagal is Marked for Death. Steven Seagal is Out for Justice. Steven Seagal is Under Siege. Steven Seagal is On Deadly Ground. But, Steven Seagal is Under Siege 2: Dark Territory doesn’t work, and marked the end of his career, at least for me.

Under Seige 2 had great villains and Katherine Heigl.

It also introduced me to one of my favorite mottos: *Chance favors the prepared mind* However, upon fact checking myself before posting this, I learned today that it's actually a derivation of a famous quote by Louis Pasteur. *In the fields of observation, chance favors only the prepared mind*
3
TheMalibu Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yes, still a good quote. Words to live by.
3
Awkward_Pangolin3254 Mar 30, 2026 +8
On Deadly Ground was where it started to fall apart for me. Considering Seagal directed, it makes sense.
8
el_f3n1x187 Mar 30, 2026 +13
Executive decision was great! Specially because his lard ass is ejected off the plane in the first 20 mins xD
13
Ok_Mixture4917 Mar 31, 2026 +3
John Leguizamo based his character in The Menu on Seagal
3
MDKrouzer Mar 30, 2026 +9
Under Siege 2 is my guilty pleasure. It's nowhere near as good as Under Siege especially without the outstanding Tommy Lee Jones and Garey Busey both seemingly try to prove who can chew the most scenery, but I still have a real soft spot for action films in trains.
9
GiantNinja Mar 30, 2026 +8
Agreed, but maybe I'd say it was his last good movie and the best he ever did, and it was straight down the toilet after that. I did enjoy the 3 word movies he did before under siege, but man did he just keep proving he sucked more and more with every movie that came after... but also, fantastic cake scene :)

thatweirdguyted Mar 30, 2026 +121
This is the ONLY time I will defend Seagal or his character: His whole deal in this movie is that he's a tactical badass who chooses to work as a cook when he could be spec ops. He gets on well with the captain because they think alike, and they both hate surprises. Mild spoilers,  someone used a surprise to compromise the security of the ship, and that put Seagals character in a position where he was the only one who could secure it. At that point, anything like looks like it might be a diversion is subversion, and is treated as such. He doesn't know if she's with the bad guys, but she did come in with them and she definitely doesn't belong on the ship.
121
emelbee923 Mar 30, 2026 +95
>His whole deal in this movie is that he's a tactical badass who chooses to work as a cook when he could be spec ops. He gets on well with the captain because they think alike, and they both hate surprises. Oh, it's much dumber - He didn't *choose* to be a cook. He was demoted because he struck his CO after a botched operation resulted in one of his SEAL teammates getting killed.
95
girafa Mar 30, 2026 +31
Why is that dumber than choosing to be a cook?
31
Rockyrox Mar 30, 2026 +114
Because you don’t get demoted to be a cook. Being a cook is a literal job in the military. It’s not a rank.
114
echocardio Mar 30, 2026 +84
"You're the worst helicopter gunner I've ever seen. You're being demoted to surgeon; maybe after you've sewn up some bladders you'll learn some respect."
84
THUORN Mar 30, 2026 +12
Wasnt that the first episode of M.A.S.H.?
12
thrwaway75132 Mar 30, 2026 +16
What busey says is “and Security Clearance revoked after Panama. That means he couldn't hold any rating except that of a yeoman...or a cook. How little did I know?” I don’t know how many shipboard ratings require a clearance. I don’t think Boatswain’s Mate would.
16
Cartire2 Mar 30, 2026 +7
theres dozen of rates that dont require a security clearance. More on the boat, than air side. A cook is actual rate that requires 'A' school. They wouldn't send him to that. Being this was in the 90's, they used to have whats called "undesignated" rates. You werent given a specific job, but instead were in the line shacks, or worked with the fuel team, or whatever else was shit jobs. When you make rank, you can apply for a specific designation. (note, the navy no longer has undesignated rates)
7
UWO_Throw_Away Mar 30, 2026 +8
“And so the judge decreed he be my butler!” “… Is this customary in your legal system?”
8
Michael_Platson Mar 30, 2026 +5
10 yo me assumed 'being a cook' meant that he was demoted, and no longer eligible to recover his rank, so that the highest ranking position he could hold while still being in the Navy was of a cook. It also put him in a position to no longer be subject to a CO who would make decisions about people's lives.
5
girafa Mar 30, 2026 +3
So he was demoted and made a cook? For movie purposes that isn't an egregious leap of our suspension of disbelief, but if movie world military allowed for demoted servicemen to be cooks, that would be a better story choice than a massively badass special forces fighter to actively choose to be a cook.
3
NeedsToShutUp Mar 30, 2026 +9
Because he’s forced to be a cook. It’s the fallback job in the military that requires no ASVAB score.
9
girafa Mar 30, 2026 +10
Being forced to be a cook is a smarter writing decision than having him choose to be a cook.
10
No_Initial_7545 Mar 30, 2026 +2
A cook is more important than any average soldier. You probably don't want your entire army to get food poisoning the night before a big operation. That's a free tip to Mr. Hegseth if he happens to be reading. Having said that he demonstrates a genuine passion for cooking which would explain how he got the job. He's taking it seriously and not as a punishment.
2
crazydave333 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Being a cook on a ship is important to the morale of the crew and not a job to be dismissed. Being a ship's cook is frontline in the logistical chain, and wars are ultimately won by logistics. It is hard work with hard hours.
2
TwoDramaticc Mar 30, 2026 +6
He was specifically a cook in that ship because he knew the captain personally
6
BeardyAndGingerish Mar 30, 2026 +11
Not sure if that was the charactor or segal just being himself...?
11
girafa Mar 30, 2026 +7
Maybe 92 Seagal, but by 96 he had a "spiritual awakening" and [didn't want to kill people on screen anymore.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cUNU8GkMso)
7
BeardyAndGingerish Mar 30, 2026 +3
Yeah... how long did that last?

Mine was Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I also ended up with a pavlovian response to the opening notes of the Cars' "Moving in Stereo."
2

Same. I lived in a student dorm and before long this part was hardly watchable anymore.

Really, he just doesn’t in the Under Siege movies. My friends and I love to put on Seagal movies and talk over them and joke. I’ve seen every Seagal Movie pre-2000 and he still acts Chinese/Japanese/Italian/Black in several of them.

I told this story before. I was on a first date with a girl at my house and we watched this movie. When this cake scene came on I said to the girl "yea she's a Playboy Playmate." The girl says "I'm bigger than her." She pops out of the cake and the girl says "Never mind." No joke.
35
pickledpeterpiper Mar 30, 2026 +20
Trying to understand this because it sounds funny...your date said "I'm bigger than her" after you mentioned that she was a playmate, but BEFORE she popped out of the cake? Then she pops out of the cake and the date was like, "Never mind..." Was she just really confident about her breast size? lol
20
MakeItHappenSergant Mar 31, 2026 +12
And he mentioned "she's a Playboy Playmate" before she appeared on screen? Actually, back up a bit. He's on a first date, she agrees to go to his house, and he puts on a Steven Seagal movie?
12
el_f3n1x187 Mar 30, 2026 +6
Iguess that is indeed what OPs date said.

Mobile_Pangolin4939 Mar 30, 2026 +4
We only watched these types of movies in the 80s and 90s for action and n*** women. The story is an afterthought often times. I actually love me some of the B movies of the 80s that had horrible acting and story. The 90s weren't bad either, but B movies started to disappear and be replaced with action movies like this one.
4
RumHamComesback Mar 31, 2026 +2
We watched for that plus the ridiculous violence and characters who cursed like sailors. It came with the package with regards to 80s/90s action movies.

I still remember watching this around age 10 or so with my older brother and his friend who were \~13. They had seen it before and were chanting "kick the cake! kick the cake!" and I was so confused. I then quickly realized why they were chanting.

I remember my parents taking me to see this in the theater when I was 11. If we had rented it and watched at home they would force me and my brother to cover my eyes but they held no power over the surprise nudity in the movie theater. This was peak sexually awakening for an 11 year-old.

Supposedly Pamela Anderson was invited to audition for that part. But she turned it down because when they met, Steven Seagal was too sleazy and she didn't want to work with him. There are also stories that he acted inappropriately towards Erica Elaniak during filming.

I really enjoyed this scene when I was younger

GeneticHazard Mar 31, 2026 +1
Note 1: uncomfortable with how Seagal just grabs her, takes her into a room, locks the door, takes off his coat, and hoists her on a bed. Note 2: relieved he was just going to get info from her. Note 3: I can believe she’s an actress, she’s pulling it off better than he is.

This movie is nearly perfect despite one glaring flaw: Segal sucks. As a kid it was easier to see past but as an adult when I rewatch I appreciate the acting of Busey and Jones (and the irony of them playing roles seemingly written for each other). But Segal just sucks. I don’t know what’s worse about him being in this. If it’s that the movie is trying to sell you on him being s***, him being badass, him being funny or him being charming. But still this movie f****** rules despite it.

One of the dumbest scenes in one of the dumbest movies, starring one of the dumbest 'actors' in history. No, not Erika.

If you’ve never seen Chasers with Tom Berenger and Erika Eleniak directed by Dennis Hopper then watch it. Hopper plays a cameo but I would argue this film features one of the greatest scenes of the 90’s. Been in love with Elaniak since she’s a tru beauty.
