"My husband lost his record deal, and some - but not all - of his fans!" Holy shit, that was the best part 😂

I chuckled and smiled but Pedolay sent me

“They’ll think he’s a nonce” I love that word. As a North American we don’t get to use it - and every time I hear a Brit use it, it makes me laugh
152
Lloytron Mar 23, 2026 +50
'Nonce' is also a term used in cyber security and cryptography. As a brit getting 'nonce error' warnings, or having meetings to discuss nonce issue will never not be funny to me
50
NuPNua Mar 23, 2026 +26
I remember a Crypto startup called themselves "Nonce" a few years ago and got slated for it on twitter by UK users.
26
nick2k23 Mar 23, 2026 +11
Rightly so, what idiots don't look up the word they're going to name their shit.
11
throw0101a Mar 23, 2026 +4
> 'Nonce' is also a term used in cyber security and cryptography. I.e., > In cryptography, a nonce is an arbitrary number that can be used just once in a cryptographic communication.[1] It is often a random or pseudo-random number issued in an authentication protocol to ensure that each communication session is unique, and therefore that old communications cannot be reused in replay attacks. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_nonce
4
Jimmni Mar 23, 2026 +7
Nonces *do* consider some numbers, such as age, rather arbitrary so that does track I guess.
7
Lloytron Mar 23, 2026 +1
Imagine someone posting that they work in cyber security and you posting them something you looked up off Wikipedia. Lol
1
throw0101a Mar 23, 2026 +1
> Imagine someone posting that they work in cyber security and you posting them something you looked up off Wikipedia. I work in IT and have to deal with cybersecurity (including encryption), and linked to Wikipedia so that people that do not have a convenient way to look up more information on the term that is being discussed. Someone may have had the question "*how is the term nonce used in cyber/crypto?*" and my reply provides an answer. Is trying to be informative a bad thing?

Wikipedia is a free, multilingual online encyclopedia launched in 2001, maintained by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation. It is created and edited by thousands of volunteers worldwide, allowing nearly anyone to contribute and edit articles in a collaborative, consensus-based process, often described as a "work in progress". Key Aspects of Wikipedia: How it Works: It uses MediaWiki software, allowing users to click "edit" and make immediate changes, with a history feature that enables tracking revisions and reverting errors. Who Writes It: Primarily volunteers (Wikipedians) from around the world. Bots are also used to fix vandalism and perform maintenance tasks. Core Principles: The "Five Pillars" govern the site, emphasizing that it is an encyclopedia, written from a neutral point of view, free for anyone to use, respectful in collaboration, and having no firm rules. Accuracy: While it can be very accurate due to the high volume of editors checking content, it is generally considered a tertiary source (providing an overview) and is best used as a starting point for research rather than a final citation. Funding: Primarily funded by donations from users, rather than advertising. History: Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in 2001 to complement the peer-reviewed Nupedia project. https://www.wikipedia.org/ Just being informative for those who may not know what Wikipedia is. Or Google.

Lol which particular tism would that be?

My ex was American but came to uni here and he thought nonce was short for nonsense and used it in a sentence once in a lecture. That was great learning day for him
32
nick2k23 Mar 23, 2026 +1
We give you permission, you can use it!
1
natguy2016 Mar 23, 2026 -6
I never say “nonce” only because it would sound “interesting” in my Southern accent
-6
QueezyF Mar 24, 2026 +1
I don’t get it
1
TurgidGravitas Mar 23, 2026 -11
I don't like it because it shows how British culture tolerates pedophiles. They're not a pedophile, they're just a nonce. They're not rapists, they're sex pests. Britain loves to make cute little nicknames for people who hurt kids. It's how Saville was able to do what he did despite everyone knowing exactly what he was.
-11
AnalbolicHazelnut Mar 23, 2026 +5
I invite you to visit the UK and introduce yourself as a nonce. Just to see how tolerable they are.

This was a great sketch! I did think the first half of the show was a bit naff, but the rest of the show really picked up and I was pleasantly surprised by how good some of the sketches were. They're always going to be hit or miss so you just hope that at least a few will be worth a watch. The Weekend Update was particularly good as it is on the US version. The Shakespeare sketch was funny, too.
14
MeasurementNo0 Mar 23, 2026 +224
Im old enough to remember when this show was funny. Edit: this is a joke.  Its a new show.
224
Klamageddon Mar 23, 2026 +15
What you may not realise (as well as it being a common US lamentation) is that there was a SNL UK that was very good 40 odd years ago with Ben Elton.
15
Jaxxlack Mar 23, 2026 -72
Edit .. this comment upset people because a Brit didn't know a joke from America.. about an American show...
-72
MeasurementNo0 Mar 23, 2026 +26
Yes the comment that has been made about snl for decades is that it used to be funny.  It has always been funny but never perfect.  I was getting in the comment early on this show so I can be cool.
26
Jaxxlack Mar 23, 2026 +9
Aww sorry mate. Lol genuinely only just began so that went totally over my head! My bad!
9
MeasurementNo0 Mar 23, 2026 +5
Yes I am sorry as I made this stupid joke.  You are a good person and dont know that it is common to remember thr old days of snl fondly.
5
Jaxxlack Mar 23, 2026 +5
Hahaha it's cool man not on you.. apparently I SHOULD KNOW!!:🫶🏻🇬🇧

THEMIKEPATERSON Mar 23, 2026 +92
In the few of the sketches I've seen, they're actually cooking way harder than I, or anyone else, would have ever imagined they were capable of.
92
Notmymain2639 Mar 23, 2026 +59
"45 seconds with Fouracres" left me really happy to see more of the show. It was cracked out Monty Python energy.
59
THEMIKEPATERSON Mar 23, 2026 +17
Haha yeah so far that sketch is the peak I've seen, for sure. I'm actually Irish too, and the guy really nailed the subtlety in the "types" of Irish grand da. But yeah, my expectations were so low, they have absolutely shattered them.
17
Cypher1492 Mar 23, 2026 +15
"What kind of Irish is your grandad" has been stuck in my head ever since.
15
Raptorpicklezz Mar 23, 2026 +5
That’s often the energy of the last sketch of the night in SNL USA. I’m glad the concept of the “10-to-1” sketch (I.e. airing at 12:50 AM) seems to have made it across the pond. Those kinds of sketches oftentimes make an entire slog of an episode worthwhile, and Will Forte was the king of those sketches in his day

They’re also allowed to swear in this version, unlike in the original SNL, which made some punchlines land better with the use.
18
Lloytron Mar 23, 2026 +3
I wasn't aware they couldn't swear in the US version, they properly leant into the swearing in this episode!
3
Sage296 Mar 23, 2026 +12
The FCC won’t let them be

I did enjoy hearing “cunty little earring” in the Hamnet sketch
1
Myopic_Cat Mar 23, 2026 +96
Yes, the pilot cooked harder than most US SNL episodes. Here's one from Weekend Update: "Feuding father and son David and Brooklyn Beckham narrowly missed each other whilst at the same Beverly Hills hotel. The feud began when Victoria was, quote, ‘inappropriately’ close with her son at his wedding, and escalated after Brooklyn accidentally yelled out his wife’s name during sex with his mum."

SleveBonzalez Mar 23, 2026 +14
Oh my god!

LarBrd33 Mar 23, 2026 +12
Speak for yourself.  There’s a strong improv scene in England.  I had no reason to believe they couldn’t find some talented sketch comedy performers and writers.
12
RosbergThe8th Mar 23, 2026 +6
I have more faith in UK comedians than US ones.
6
JayPetey Mar 23, 2026 +11
It’s one thing to have months of prep for a show to make it good, it’s another to do it week after week. Hopefully they can keep it up.
11
kugglaw Mar 23, 2026 -7
Yeah did not expect it to be this good. Its funnier than that shitty Mitchel and Webb sketch show that came out recently.

The good thing is, half of their parliament doesn't even need elections.

[They're doing away with that.](https://www.npr.org/2026/03/21/nx-s1-5137843/uk-parliament-abolishes-hereditary-lords) While the House of Lords won't be directly elected, hereditary peers are going away.

This was hilarious The US SNL needs more skits like this.
3
ScramItVancity Mar 23, 2026 +1
SNL Korea has really good pre-taped MMORPG parodied clearly written, directed and performed by fans of the game genre.
1
chefdangerdagger Mar 23, 2026 +2
This was easily the best sketch of the night.
2
confusing_roundabout Mar 23, 2026
The laugh track kills it.
0
Khal_Zhako Mar 23, 2026 +2
It's not a laugh track it's a live audience
2
confusing_roundabout Mar 24, 2026 +1
It's all the same when it comes out of a tv speaker.
1
GagOnMacaque Mar 23, 2026 -7
Wow, something that's actually funny from snl.
-7
aresef Mar 23, 2026 -1
This was so out of pocket. Imagine how this would fly in the states lol
-1

Their President is a rapist so...
2
ReedOnlyAccess Mar 23, 2026 -7
Why did they feel the need to specify the pedo hunters were "right-wing"? Edit: So many downvotes, yet no one can explain it.
-7
TruthFlavor Mar 23, 2026 -16
The thing is, perfume commercials aren't like this any more...It's like a parody from the 90's..
-16
Ill_Ad_791 Mar 23, 2026 +3
And?
3
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -47
I guarantee more Americans have watched this show and are commenting on it than brits, most of us don’t care about this format and the laugh track was so forced
-47
Disastrous_Wing7084 Mar 23, 2026 +29
You can literally see the audience in the studio laughing at it, how did you still manage to think it was a laugh track
29
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -19
Fruedian slip I mean the laughter is overly forced
-19
burdnt_out Mar 23, 2026 +7
Do you know what Freudian slip means? You’re def not using it correctly.
7
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -1
In psychoanalysis, a Freudian slip, also called parapraxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that occurs due to the interference of an unconscious subdued wish or internal train of thought - Wikipedia In this case an error in physical action (typing) due to inference of an unconscious internal train of thought: forced laughter = laugh tracks
-1
burdnt_out Mar 23, 2026 +2
Nope. Still not correct. Mixing two concepts up is not a Freudian slip. Freudian slips are when the mistype or misspeaking unintentionally exposes an internal thought or bias. “Are you concerned about the upcoming erection… I mean election” Forced laughter/laugh tracks are essential the same thing.
2
mnimatt Mar 24, 2026 +1
That's what he described with the "unconscious subdued wish or internal train of thought" part of the copy and pasted text from wikipedia. It's still weird, though, because the definition is correct but it's not what happed. A regular mix up would just be a slip, not a Freudian slip, so you're right about that part.
1
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -1
Very confidently incorrect but that’s okay I’ll let you reddit While your here though, look up the meaning of pedantic
-1
AdrianW3 Mar 23, 2026 -14
The laugh track on that cold open was bloody terrible though. And if that had an audience then the sound editor managed to make them sound like a laugh track. (Although maybe the cold open was pre-recorded)
-14
fallenmonk Mar 23, 2026 +12
Dunno how to make this any clear, they absolutely do not use a laugh track!
12
AdrianW3 Mar 23, 2026 -3
OK, OK, I believe you. But the laughing on the cold open seemed forced like someone was holding up "laugh now" and "stop laughing now" signs. It didn't help that the cold open went on way too long as well. Worst sketch of the night IMO.
-3
Chataboutgames Mar 23, 2026 +8
Are y'all okay over there? Every mention of this show has self-identified brits in the comment section acting like the cast personally railed their mom then made her pay for her own Uber home.
8
radda Mar 23, 2026 +3
They're just still mad that Ania Magliano got ripped off on Taskmaster and are taking it out on her new job.
3
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -3
Yeah we’re okay, we just have our own comedy formats that don’t usually align with SNL It’s also okay to have opinions here, I know you guys might not understand that- also us “self identified Brits” say Mum.
-3
Chataboutgames Mar 23, 2026 +6
> Yeah we’re okay, we just have our own comedy formats that don’t usually align with SNL I get that, I just don't generally make it an issue of national pride every time someone makes a TV show that doesn't interest me.
6
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -2
Did I make it a matter of national pride or did I just say it sucked, the laughter felt forced, and most people I know also thought the same? There’s a difference Classic turning a fairly innocuous point into a much bigger thing than it needs to be
-2
Chataboutgames Mar 23, 2026 +4
> Did I make it a matter of national pride or did I just say it sucked, the laughter felt forced, and most people I know also thought the same? There’s a difference Actually what you did is frame the whole thing in terms of "Americans watched this, no one here cares about it." If you'd just said "I don't think it's funny" no one would have given a shit. So...yeah.
4
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026
Ohh my god it’s the problem with reddit and the wider world that Americans clearly never learned to read or contextualise things < argue about that No I didn’t frame as it as that, I said more Americans watched it than Brits as it’s most likely true - and as I live here yes most people I know don’t care for it and wonder why it’s here other than tabloids as previously mentioned. You can’t really talk about SNL without bringing up the difference in the audiences especially from the US because it’s a flagship US show. If I wanted to say what you think I said, I would’ve phrased it that way.
0
Chataboutgames Mar 23, 2026 +6
> at Americans clearly never learned to read or contextualise things < argue about that "Why do people keep accusing me of framing things in nationalistic terms!?"
6
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 +1
If you don’t see the irony in me making that comment I’m truly lost for words, thank you for proving my point
1
Chataboutgames Mar 23, 2026 +4
No, the irony isn't there. I'm plenty aware of what I'm doing, I'm just honest about it. Not sure why you're pretending otherwise when your comment is right there, visibly identifying you as full of shit to anyone who bothers to read it.
4
chalwar Mar 24, 2026
Are…you drunk?
0
RPDRNick Mar 23, 2026 +4
That would stand to reason, seeing that more than half of all Reddit's traffic is from the US; six times more than the UK.
4
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -6
Exactly which is why the shows reception is skewed because every bit I know that’s seen it doesn’t get why they’re doing this or even watch sky tv anymore
-6
bfsfan101 Mar 23, 2026 +7
It got solid reviews from all the major broadsheet papers and comedy reviewers. And it beat at least two of the main channels in the ratings, so early some people in the UK have responded to it. What you’re mixing up is that most of the negativity came BEFORE it had aired, when seemingly everyone rooted for it to fail.
7
everythingisunknown Mar 23, 2026 -3
I mean getting praise from the broadsheet and other actors who either want to be in it or don’t want to disparage it isn’t exactly a surprise… Audiences matter more than critics
-3
bfsfan101 Mar 23, 2026 +2
And I have seen very few negative posts about it since it came out, only before. The majority of people have said, “it’s like any sketch show, hits and misses”.
