Underdiscussed prestige TV?

Posted by WillNeighbor

Hey all, I want to open a discussion about some of the more under discussed or lesser known examples of absolutely great TV out there. I feel like I’m running out of stuff to watch. Tried Ozark and the first season was relatively boring (to me) so I’m in search of some good shows. My top 5 for reference (not lesser known) 1. Halt and Catch Fire 2. Dark 3. Game of Thrones 4. The Americans 5. Andor Notable mentions - Breaking Bad/BCS, Justified, The Good Place, The Knick, i could go on but i’ll stop there

HBO's Rome. It's got a pretty big cult following but I think it's generally overshadowed by the success of GOT, which is kind of a spiritual successor

Also John Adams. HBO has a lot of great historical shows.

If you like historical shows, check out TURN: Washington's Spies

wwj 3 days ago +20
This is the real answer for this thread. I feel like it was completely under the radar. You have people in here saying The Wire and Barry, which everyone was talking about. No one talks about Turn. I am rewatching it right now and noticed that a few members of the crew and production team are from Star Trek DS9, which makes sense why I enjoy it so much.

Man the way Rome ended is not okay. They were doing so well and then got played off the stage due to budget.

Hollow_Rant 4 days ago +39
Rome and Deadwood died so Game of Thrones could thrive.
39
HankIsMoody 4 days ago +26
But Rome and Deadwood were so much better than GoT
26
Hollow_Rant 4 days ago +7
Yeah but they didn't have the reasons that HBO wanted. So instead of two expensive shows, they went with one expensive show that became a juggernaut.
7
OperationMobocracy 4 days ago +33
As I understand it the sets burned down. But there’s also the general problem of “ending” a serial about Rome 400 years before Rome itself fell (in the west).
33
labhamster2 4 days ago +32
“The show ended because Rome burnt down” is a pretty ironic way to go about it
32
sludge_dragon 4 days ago +11
Yes, the cast and crew of a subsequently-cancelled Netflix production, *The Visigoths*, rampaged through and burned everything. /s
11
OperationMobocracy 3 days ago +4
That would have been even later. The Visigoths fought with Rome against the Huns in 451.
4
IncapableKakistocrat 3 days ago +4
>But there’s also the general problem of “ending” a serial about Rome 400 years before Rome itself fell (in the west). I vaguely recall an interview with one of the creators saying they had a 5 series arc for it with the final season focusing on the rise of the messiah. The Egypt stuff they crammed into season 2 is what they wanted to focus seasons 3 and 4 on more.

Spartacus would technically come first chronologically.

> HBO's Rome. And I'll give *"I, Claudius"* (1976) an honorable mention. Dated now, but it was prestige TV in its long-ago time. IMDb users' rating: 8.8, not bad for such an old (and old-fashioned) show.

You'd think with all the Margaret Qualley hubbub the show would have seen an explosion of popularity since then. But no. The book it's based on is great but very different. It's basically just season one of the show with a different ending to The Guilty Remnants story.

15
Kindarelevanttoo 4 days ago +5
Does Black Sails fit here as under-discussed though? I haven’t even heard of those other 2, but I feel like Black Sails gets/got quite a bit of hype from pretty much its first season onwards.
5
RBlomax38 4 days ago +10
I think it just depends where you tend to go online bc most of the people I talk to have never heard of Black Sails. I mean it was on Stars as opposed to HBO and Amazon like the other two lol
10
zaminDDH 4 days ago +4
Yeah, I know like 1 other person that's ever even heard of it.
4
BearWrangler 4 days ago +5
I've seen that 90% of the time Black Sails gets mentioned, it's usually in a "this show did not get the right amount of attention it deserved" type of way. And I'd know cuz I'm a huge culprit of this lol. But irl I've seen that most people either never heard of it or never gave it a look because it was on Starz, tho I managed to convince quite a few to give it a try once it was on Netflix.

I can believe how good it is. I thought it would be a show about low intelligence secret agents, so I never bothered watching. And it is… but it’s also a show with very engaging mysteries and intelligent plot lines. The quality hasn’t dipped at all either. I hope they keep it going for many more seasons.
49
NatureTrailToHell3D 4 days ago +25
Well, according to the guy running Slough House in the show, it is full of low intelligence secret agents.

Interview with the Vampire! It's an absolutely mesmerizing show and such a brilliant adaptation of Anne Rice's novels (with a few good changes). And the two lead actors, Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid, are stealing every scene they are in.  It also feels like the series tops almost every list of underrated TV shows for the past few years. The first two seasons cover the first book. The third season comes out this summer and adapts the second book, The Vampire Lestat (with the series changing its name alongside that).
44
Vikkio92 3 days ago +4

It’s not like it’s obscure or something, but considering it’s really one of the best shows of all time, it doesn’t get discussed nearly enough.
74
MomThinksImHandsome 4 days ago +11
Some of that is how long ago it came out. Prestige TV was still pretty uncommon and definitely not available to casually stream. Most people just missed it and with so much coming out these days you just aren't going to hear much about a show from 20 years ago
11
brainlightning 4 days ago +69
For my money, Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is the greatest television performance of all time. Magnus opus work from one of the greats.
69
Cervical_Plumber 4 days ago +30
Such a good take. Maybe my favorite goddamn character of all time. He's objectively evil and violent, but you can't help but like him. The way Ian McShane plays him is incredible.
30
caligaris_cabinet 4 days ago +8
Honestly one of the best villain protagonists. Tony Soprano is often cited as the best but Swearangen might be better. Like you said objectively evil and violent but he has a noble goal to bring civilization to his corner of the world. His goals are bigger than himself and I find that more interesting than Tony.
8
ShortyBoyds 3 days ago +8
Swearengen has considerably more depth, and is self aware of his trauma and insecurities, as opposed to Tony who is completely blind to his narcissism. Hes one of the best characters of all time.

mistersmith22 4 days ago +7
It's simultaneously Shakespeare 2.0 and an almost comedic approach to the use of profanity, using modern words instead of what the people of Deadwood would have actually said...but the irony is what passed for profanity then would be comical to us now, so, for all their commitment to the sets, costuming, etc. being so accurate, they *had* to change history to make it land with modern audiences.

Oz deserves so much attention. It came out before Sopranos and The Wire. It really kicked off the golden age of HBO dominance in dramas.
4
Schiavona77 4 days ago +10
Maybe it’s been too long, but I couldn’t finish Oz. It was just too fucked up in too many ways, it always felt to me like it was the prestige TV show that took it too far and showed everyone else (Sopranos) where the line actually was.
10
justthistwicenomore 4 days ago +13
I think that's a very fair critique, especially in the later seasons it hit a level of over the top that left it feeling much less grounded and approachable. But it also had some incredible performances and arcs that---especially at the time---were unlike anything else on TV.

Station Eleven! Miniseries on HBO, wildly under discussed I think because of the timing. It came out 2021, and takes place post a massive airborne disease that wipes out most of the population. The first episode is the play by play of the outbreak and it was tough to sit through at the time but the whole thing is just incredible and moving and heartbreaking and beautiful.

It's this. Everybody else is talking about Emmy nominated shows. The fact the leads haven't gotten noms for this show is insane.
31
jadingg 4 days ago +6
Well AMC doesn't seem to believe in it's ability to win for whatever reason, they apparently pushed season 3's release date back 2 months so it wouldn't qualify for this year's Emmys in favour of one of their new shows that they seem to believe has a better shot. And of course season 2 missed the 2024 Emmys cutoffs by one episode/week, so it seems like they just don't have faith in it's ability to win awards, despite the rave reviews from critics.

It was a good follow-up to the comic continuity. They found a few loose threads in the original, pulled them gently, and wove them into a new story. Very clever.
22
Gofunkiertti 3 days ago +9
Yeah Watchman is stunning in how it actually improved the original story to me by adding in a new context for me. It almost perfectly s**** into the original story whilst the racial themes massively improve some context missing from the original story. Watchmen is fantastic but it mostly sidesteps the obvious racial undertones that exist in a lot of early superhero stories. Honestly the only thing that didn't work was Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias. Something about his performance felt off to me.

If Black Sails were the exact same show scene for scene and word for word, but aired on HBO instead, it would be heralded alongside early GoT, Sopranos, Oz, and etc as one of the greatest shows of all time. And guys like Luke Arnold, Toby Stephens, and Zack McGowen would be household names with much larger resumes in the time since. It is a genuinely fantastic show and as good as anything else in its genre or any other ‘prestige’ shows, imo.

Boardwalk Empire. Richard Harrow is one of my all-time favorite television characters.

Legion was truly incredible. Three seasons but they are brilliant. Written by the same guy behind Fargo and Alien: Earth

One I feel like I rarely see talked about is Bates Motel. It’s got a few quirks, but it’s a great show I’d put up there in the prestige TV category

The Night of (one season miniseries) Mr Inbetween The Leftovers Sharp Obiects I also think The Shield is an all timer on par with the best, and is lesser watched because of its age

Huff. Only lasted two seasons but was one of my favorite shows while it was on.

Spooks It's a UK MI5 show, it's gritty. First few seasons are good, then it gets great.  Was before it's time in terms of removing plot armour from major characters and key cast members.  You're like, "oh I wonder how they good guy will get out of this one, looks like the bad guys got him. Oh the bad guy killed him exactly how a competent bad guy would."

The last kingdom. It's a slow burn as they solidify the cast.
