Unexpected flavour/texture/temperature

Posted by bastet_memphis

Random memory from my childhood popped into my head today, and it got me thinking, what's your worst experience with an unexpected texture or temperature? Like when you sip a coffee (should be hot) and suddenly stone cold hits your tongue (panic) and you realize you've sipped yesterday's coffee. Here's my worst. When I was little my mum would buy really nice chocolate milk occasionally. It was a big treat in our house, and only appeared on Saturdays. I poured myself a cup, took a big sip, and left it on the counter for a bit. I came back, took another sip and my brain panicked, it was... fizzy? Carbonated. Definitely not creamy, but something terrifyingly wrong in my mouth. I spit it out and heard my jerk sister laughing. She had poured fizzy water into my cup when I left it! My other one is I accidentally folded my socks with little gummy foot pads inside out. Putting on a sock (should be soft) and being met with a surprise cold gummy sensation made me gag. So unexpectedly carbonated milk and gummy socks are my worst. What's yours?

biting into what you think is chocolate chip and it’s actually raisins 😭

Haha, I firmly believe that's why so many people hate raisins! Too often disguised as chocolate. I was at a Chinese wedding once and mistook bean paste for chocolate. Shock and disappointment to rival any raisin.

The surprise crunch where there shouldn't be is always alarming.

Being a child and sneaking a sip of red wine thinking it was creaming soda.

Haha, that would be instant regret, especially if it was a particularly dry red.

I don’t remember the dryness, but I remember spitting it all over the table lol

I got very freaked out by a particularly soft piece of kidney from a steak and kidney pie once and have never eaten one again. It's been nearly 30 years 😂

Eugh, that made me shudder and my mouth curl involuntary.

bro, that fizzing chocolate milk story is wild. i’d probably have a meltdown too if i got hit with that. for me, it's definitely biting into what i thought was a soft cookie, but it was actually a hard stale one... like, where’s the love in that?

My husband makes fun of me for smelling everything before I eat it. I think it stems from a deep mistrust borne of my childhood 😅

Hard texture which should be soft definitely makes my brain stall. Like when you're eating something and crunch down on somehing that shouldn't be there (bone fragment, plastic, etc)

Octopus, a lot more rubbery and chewy than expected

Oof, rubbery is never a good texture.

Boiled peanuts. So mushy!

I've never encountered a boiled peanut... mush when you're expecting crunchy is the antithesis of that crunch when you're not expecting it. And yet peanut butter is so good! Our brains are just wired to dislike surprises I guess.

Went to take a sip of my mom's Pepsi. Had no clue she had finished her drink a while ago and had been using it as an ash tray. Got a mouthful of cigarette ashes. 🤢 To this day I cannot understand why people voluntarily smoke.

I work in emergency medicine. Sticking my hand in something warm and wet (liquid) is bad but wet (jelly) is maybe worse

I have this problem with apples: the difference between a hard crisp one and a soft mealy one (yuk). I always cut and core apples before eating them so I can gauge the texture first.
