>*Nearly 500 unruly-passenger reports have been filed so far this year; FAA data shows 110 of those came in April alone.* At least some, like the current guy, have seen too many movies.
469
railker May 3, 2026 +298
2017 had 544 reports filed for the entire year. Post-COVID return to travel saw that spike to **5,973** in 2021, and then stayed above 2,000/year for the next 3 years. I feel for flight crews that have to deal with the brunt of it. Need more rolls of duct tape in the cabin.
298
Blubbolo May 3, 2026 +68
Is there some scientific on why it spiked so much?
68
kinglouie493 May 3, 2026 +243
Probably coincides with people losing their filters. People seem to be more intolerant of others and more vocal about it. I have a theory on the cause but I'm no scientist so I'll keep it to myself.

In 2021? People going apeshit about needing to wear a mask….
70
stoic_spaghetti May 3, 2026 +162
Republicans telling people to go apeshit about wearing masks. It didn’t come from thin air. People were fine with masking and vaccines until republicans in congress started making it a political issue for the sole purpose of creating division.

I vote Republican and I totally agree with you. Everyone hated me during Covid, all my Dem friends and all my Rep friends. I got vaxxed and like whatever put your mask so you don’t get sick 😂

I'd like to hear your theory. We are adults here, we don't have to assume it's fact.
3
kinglouie493 6 days ago +10
I believe it started with Trump and the maga movement. I realize that every president isn't a saint, but I liken it to you dating my sister. I realize you're doing it, but don't f*** her on the couch while I'm watching tv. As a leader, there should be some sense of decorum. Not mocking disabled people, mocking senators and spouses, mocking former presidents. Late night tweets riling people up. Then we have the whole social media and conspiracy podcasts where disinformation and outright hate is spewed. Let's just take Covid for example. We knew there were a lot of deaths in China. You had government officials dumping stock after the initial closed door briefing because the prognosis was so bad. Yet getting behind wearing a mask was somehow infringing on people's rights, and somehow you wearing one totally infuriated the next guy. How do Asian countries wear masks during flu season without an uproar? But somehow it was the democrats shutting the country down. Never mind that the whole world was going through the same pandemic and shut down, it's my right to stand right in your face. So now with the anonymity of the internet people feel emboldened to say what they want. Truth, lies, bigotry, hatred it doesn't matter because the president says the same things. So now after being used to saying and believing what ever I want on the internet that's my persona in real life because nobody is going to tell me what to do. Stickers on gas pumps showing Biden saying "I did that", when the fuel prices rose because of the Russian Ukraine war but not a f****** peep now that I'm paying $5 for regular and $6 a gallon for diesel. From a war we have no clue what the objective is, at least nothing that was conveyed to the public. We've normalized hatred, when grade school teachers are "woke" because there is a "be kind" banner in their room, is this really where we are at in life? Where drawing a rainbow is frowned upon, hell that was the easiest picture for me to draw as a kid. I guess in short we've normalized hatred, we want to divide everyone. My beliefs are right and there is no place for yours if they differ. This is just my personal observation, it wasn't that long ago that I thought we all got along. I might have been naive and not realizing what was actually happening below the surface but I thought most everyone just wanted to get along and just live their lives in peace and quiet.

Could you dm your theory I’m curious to get someone else’s take on this bc it’s a very real thing that’s happened but there’s nothing “official” that states what that thing is
-4
sergius64 May 3, 2026 -130
Weren't everyone forced to wear face masks while conspiracy theories about COVID and vaccines were running rampant?
-130
Chicken_Chaser_420 May 3, 2026 +115
"forced to wear face masks" is a weird way of spinning the most basic pandemic public safety protocol since pandemics have been a thing. I swear, right-wing propaganda has done permanent damage to this country's general intelligence.
115
sergius64 May 3, 2026 -52
What is factually wrong about what I said? Were people forced to wear masks everywhere? Yes - they were. Therefore there is no spin: simply sad reality. I vote the same way you do, doesn't mean I enjoyed the experience of wearing the damned things everywhere.
-52
ohlookahipster May 3, 2026 +25
It really wasn’t that bad… it’s a basic mask, man. Providers wear them everyday.
25
Morat20 May 4, 2026 +3
I do enjoy the people hyperventilating about how they can't breathe and it's scientifically proven that they can't breathe and like every medical practitioner in America was like "Today I learned I can hold my breath for an entire 12 hours shift". I'm just over here wondering if they imagine surgical masks having little air lines, like they're scuba diving as they're reassembling someone's ankle bones.
3
ActivatingInfinity May 3, 2026 +34
Sorry, I'm not understanding what's sad about having to wear a mask to prevent the spread of illness?
34
sergius64 May 4, 2026 -35
Well, it hurt my ears for one. Then there was all the side effects it had on the economy and the political fallout. The isolation... heck one of leading theories as to why Putin invaded Ukraine is that he became so isolated that he got no good advice. Are we all just pretending the entire thing was a marvelous learning experience in caring for your fellow man now? Because as far as I can tell things going downhill dramatically accelerated around then - and running around with masks on was a gigantic part of that whole experience.
-35
projectkingston May 4, 2026 +18
And you think it's the masks' fault??
18
railker May 3, 2026 +104
Not directly, but when you click on 2021 on the FAA's [Unruly Passenger Statistics](https://www.faa.gov/unruly) page, a new data box pops up on the left: "Mask-related incidents reported: 4,290" That makes about 72% of the unruly passenger reports for that year.
104
hirudoredo May 3, 2026 +56
I was gonna say, I distinctly remember a lot of "freakout" videos after air traveled resumed regarding people who refused to follow mask mandates and that's where my mind immediately went when I saw the figure.
56
ohlookahipster May 3, 2026 +18
Omfg those grifters who made $$$ selling those useless “ADA mask exemption” cards. I remember seeing a few of these unhinged people at the airport claiming they had some disability and couldn’t wear a mask.
18
Guilty_Cattle_5165 May 4, 2026 +3
Sounds the wheelchair crowd, too. Or the people bringing random animals on the plane.
3
trying_to_adult_here May 3, 2026 +17
I work in aviation and that matches my recollection. Some people *really* didn’t like to wear masks and would make a scene about it. Also, for a while at the beginning some companies were being very, very strict to the point of being a little ridiculous. Like if you were served a meal you were supposed to take a bite, then put the mask back on while you chewed. Which was a lot, and I’m generally in favor of masks. Or I had a crew ask me to get a manager to meet a flight for “mask noncompliance” because a parent didn’t force their autistic three-year-old child to wear a mask because he hated it and had a meltdown when they tried to put one on him. I asked them if that was really the hill they wanted to die on. It was, so I got the manager.
17
MrMichaelJames May 3, 2026 +43
Without getting the thread locked I’m assuming a lot has to do with the political environment that was telling people they can do whatever they want now without any repercussions.
43
ailish May 3, 2026 +26
I think COVID broke people. People in general have been so mean ever since. They seem a lot more road ragey, they're a lot more mean to service workers, the divide between people in politics has gotten _even worse_, if you can believe it. Something about COVID just broke people.
26
meatball402 May 3, 2026 +12
Covid drove a shitload of people crazy.
12
sacredblasphemies May 3, 2026 +7
Some of it, I think, was mask-related. Also, I think there has been cognitive damage post-COVID that our country still hasn't dealt with.
7
TimTom8921 May 4, 2026 +7
100% there is a massive hike in mental illness incidents in this country post 2021. I have nothing to back this up but it just seems like people are crashing out way more than before
7
rygo796 May 3, 2026 +12
A good chunk can be chalked up to sleeping pills. Some of the clips you see are people having what looks like a full on mental break, which can be a side effect of taking a sleeping pill then not going to sleep.
12
mothandravenstudio May 3, 2026 +14
And being allowed to drink crazy amounts of alcohol in the terminal.
14
Gold-Kaleidoscope537 May 3, 2026 +3
I never knew that. Is it all pills or certain ones?
3
rygo796 May 3, 2026 +9
Ambien-type pills, which I think is the most popular, definitely does it and I know people who use it specifically to travel. My friend personally told me he had to lock up his phone when he took it because he was texting people wild things, but I forget the specifics.

> Depending on the severity of the behavior, passengers may face FAA fines of up to $43,658 per violation, federal criminal charges, or both. For about 10% of that fine, they could take a private charter instead (domestic only) and skip all the hassles. Affordable private plane charters is the next travel trend I would like to see.

There have been 4 months in the year. 500 / 4 is 125. Fantastic reporting there.
24
railker May 3, 2026 -9
"Nearly 500" isn't 500, and what does dividing by 4 have to do with it? We have exact month-by-month statistics.
-9
Luniticus May 3, 2026 +27
"*FAA data shows 110 of those came in April alone."* That makes it sound like April had more than the others, when, statistically, we should expect it to have around 125. So it's actually less than at least one of the other months.
27
railker May 3, 2026 +5
Ohhhhhhhh k, I get it. Thanks!

1
DC2SEA_ May 3, 2026 +28
"110 of those came in April alone" That's not significant. That's less than 1/4 of 500 reports in 1/4 months and reported. It could he higher than normal, like I'd assume a large part of the yearly total happens around New Year's or something.
28
NotTheBotUrLookngFor May 3, 2026 +2

2
Narrow-Chef-4341 May 4, 2026 +2
Don’t try to confuse people with your fancy statistics. There were 110 cases in April. One hundred and TEN for Pete’s sake! That’s like… like… more than 108. LOTS MORE. Trust me that’s serious. I should know, I got my degree in clickbait from an online university last week! (Seriously: how sad that you have to point that out, no? *\*sigh\*)*

3
Kevin686766 May 3, 2026 +2
That doesn't seem to bad. I would have expected a much higher number.  It seems safer to fly for six hours then to spend the same amount of time in any bar that's near a airport. Probably less fun on the plane though.

130
dancingbriefcase May 3, 2026 +25
You know, it's actually poetic. The last time I flew Spirit airlines, they had a mix-up and I got upgraded to the front large seat. Which came with unlimited drinks and snacks. And a big comfy seat. So, that was the only time I ever flew Spirit. And I guess I'm happy that I had a good experience haha
25

Spirit was awesome. People just love to b**** is all. The FAs were always nice, and the rides were always smooth.
12
sugaratc May 3, 2026 +27
The problem with Spirit wasn't the company or planes themselves, it was the other passengers and their tendency to cause problems. It was the Walmart/Waffle House of the skies.
27
OU7C4ST May 3, 2026
I never had 1 problem with anyone on Spirit over the years. I've seen more shit go down on my fair share of Delta flights though.

I feel post-COVID travelers have lost their f****** minds. I used to travel a lot for work before it and while it wasn’t perfect, it’s not even close to what it’s like today. The entitlement is insane by travelers. With that said, all the carriers are trying to get as lean as possible at the expense of the traveler. Status means little nowadays as well so when they do inevitably f*** up, they don’t really care or you have to escalate countless times in the hopes they throw you some sky pesos(Delta) at you. I don’t see it getting better as the enshitification of everything continues. Even flying first class is different.
216
Bizarrebazaars May 3, 2026 +61
More rude as f*** too for sure. Zero regard or respect for others. If you so much as politely with a smile ask the child behind you or their parents for them to stop kicking your seat, the response is unbelievably not empathetic nor apologetic. They look at you like the spawn of Satan. Then they leave their row a complete mess.
61
2_Spicy_2_Impeach May 3, 2026 +10
I travel less now but know folks that still do and that has been a common theme. Maybe only a couple times back then where there'd be an unruly kid with checked out parents. Once was in first class when I was heading home for Christmas. I thought a grown adult(that looked like a former pro-NFL player in Seahawks gear) was going to fight them in the first row. Also, noise cancelling headphones but that doesn't stop a restless kicker. After traveling so much I'm usually asleep before the plane takes off (unless traveling with folks that want to chat). It's everywhere now though. Just sucks on a plane because you can't really go anywhere to get away. Everyone off in their own little world and f*** everyone else.

AggressiveSkywriting 6 days ago +1
It's so bizarre. If my toddler was kicking a seat I'd be mortified. People in general seem to have lost their notions for personal space, general spatial awareness (groups just blocking walkways, full sidewalks, etc), and have zero patience/temper control.

UNaidworker May 3, 2026 +16
Was boarding a flight to the East Coast and boarding abruptly stopped for like 10 minutes...then a cop brushes past us and then an Indian couple deboards followed by said cop and flight attendants. Apparently they pitched a fit over not being able to stuff a carry on bag under their seat like a backpack and point blank refused to put it in the overhead bin despite there being room or even gate checking the bag for free. Was that worth it to get literally booted off of your flight, possibly arrested and put on a no fly list? Like...I just don't understand

Disagree. Delta is still one of the better choices. More expensive, but they do put in effort.
-2
DaddyBison May 3, 2026 +6
thats entirely based on personal experience and your departure/arrival destinations. Delta is better flying around the south, but some of my worst experiences have been going to Chicago on Delta. Ive had equally good and bad experiences with united and american But theyre all significantly worse stress and annoyance than just taking extra days to drive somewhere
6
Mormanades May 4, 2026 +1
Gas and cars are expensive as hell right now, who can afford to drive across the country right now?
1
DaddyBison May 4, 2026 +3
Airfair is also expensive as hell right now and it's only going to get worse with spirit going under. Still cheaper to drive cross country than buy plane tickets if your traveling with at least 1 passenger
3
shwarma_heaven May 3, 2026 -2
That's true. I don't fly in your shoes.. Just have my own personal experience. But I know every time I have flown another airline it has been significantly worse. To each their own, I guess.
-2
2_Spicy_2_Impeach May 3, 2026 +2
They're turning to shit. They used to be my go to. They're a joke of what they were even a couple years ago (pre-Pandemic). It's just that less and less competition means you have less choices. Just check the Delta sub. Still a decline from the 90s where status was slightly more of a thing. I sat next to a 10MM and heard him complain about being in coach for a cross country flight because they couldn't bump someone. There's a reason Delta miles are called Sky Pesos and have been for a bit. Also spike in cancellations from Delta due to them wanting to not hire staff(gotta keep it lean for shareholders). Once summer storms hit, it's going to be a disaster. And I've not read anything saying they're hiring a bunch of people. https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/05/03/delta-cancels-nearly-400-flights-in-two-days-over-crew-scheduling-crisis/
2
shwarma_heaven May 3, 2026
I've never had an issue. The few times I got bumped, they put me in a nice hotel. I just got bumped up to 1C at least 3 times last month. Sky Club is the nicest one I've been in. And you walk in free if you sat 1C - unlike United. As for service decades ago not being as good - that is across the board. Hard to look down at one airline when they still have the best service, even if it is less than what was offered by all airlines 20 years ago. Shoot, I've got bumped up to first class on a flight across the Pacific... it felt like staying at a 5-Star hotel... (And I'm not a Million Miler - I'm at 700k the last time I checked.)

I haven’t stepped foot in a Sky Club in years despite having a card or status that allows it lol. Highly dependent on airport but the places I traveled were meh and folks on calls on speaker phone or loud ass laptop(no headphones). They’re bumping less folks up because they want folks to pay for them and a lot are. Even with higher status I rarely got bumped up. I had a FC ticket I paid for coast to coast heading home after a vacation. Go to check in and an error. Next day I call and I have no ticket. I was bumped for someone else in FC and never rebooked. They bumped that person back off the flight and gave me my seat back. Otherwise I’d have been fucked waiting and have to find a new flight. Like I said they’re in a race to the bottom right now with their current leadership. Their reliability is down to sixth of carriers and unless they magically hire pilots and crew, the summer is gonna suck.

I fly with them at least twice a month. I've never had an issue like that. They were even very accommodating during the shutdown. I don't know what to tell you.

Luck of the draw I guess. I flew multiple times a month sometimes multiple times a week and was great for the first year. Thought my coworkers were crazy with their stories. Then just random shit. Did get to play CS in an airport lounge with friends though when our flight was cancelled. An impromptu LAN tournament at DIA. Hoping they get their shit together for summer storms like I mentioned. Their scheduling software is shit, they short pay pilots, refuse to hire FA crew, laid off IT folks, and it continues.
