I'm imagining the plane hit the pole with a wheel and the then detached wheel hit the bakery truck.
42
Deshes011 May 4, 2026 +40
The wheel didn’t even detach. The wheel hit the lamp post, then the lamp post flew into the truck. The wheel stayed on the plane I’m pretty sure

androshalforc1 May 4, 2026 +28
From the article > The New Jersey State Police said a landing tire and the underside of the plane also hit a truck, and the light pole then struck a Jeep that was on the highway. So the plane hit a light pole and truck, the light pole hit a jeep

Nope, the wheel struck the windshield of the truck. It didn't detach, the plane was just that low.
14
PurpleSailor May 4, 2026 +7
The lights there are only about 10 ft off the ground, pretty much the same height as the truck was. They're *extra* low there because of the runway starting about 70 feet from the road.

Incredibly badly designed infrastructure where the elevated highway is right in front of the sunken *short* runway which has an approach path that requires a [hard right turn at the last second](https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=aa6c50&lat=40.697&lon=-74.146&zoom=14.5&showTrace=2026-05-03&leg=2&trackLabels)... oh and [it was extremely windy](https://www.listnook.com/r/aviation/comments/1t2ydg1/united_airlines_flight_169_hits_bakery_truck/ojriqy8/). [There's been close calls before](https://www.listnook.com/r/dashcams/comments/1kqtbsu/united_plane_gets_close_in_nj/) so this is a textbook case of an accident waiting to happen.
28

Honestly though, a little red light on top would make sense if they don't already have that. They do have that, don't they?

Same! Used to live in Jersey and every time I drove on the Turnpike by EWR, I would try to see if a plane is about to land.

Delta 191 got hit by a microburst and crashed at D/FW in 1985. One of the fatalities was a guy (William Mayberry) in his car on the highway right outside the airport. Just minding his own business. I've never felt the same driving under the landing approach ever since then.

I flew into Newark from Rome yesterday on a 777. It was f****** ROUGH. The wind was really bad for landing, I was just telling my pilot buddy that our plane was literally sideways until 1k feet.

If you can draw a line from the Secretary of Transportation to this crew dipping low on the glideslope - buddy I am all ears.
38
Rugby562 May 4, 2026 +15
Buddy you won't believe it, he not only was flying the plane and working the ATC, but he also was the one that scheduled the bakery truck route and installed the light post.
15
notathr0waway1 May 4, 2026 +3
Sean Duffy is a piece of work in some respects, but if you think that the skies are LESS safe because he is now the transportation secretary, I respectfully disagree
3

The safety of air travel is literally part of his job - which he is not qualified for.
8

Based on hard data on commercial airline accidents this is a pretty rough case to make.

anonymouswan1 May 4, 2026 +6
I think there's more flights every day than there has ever been. I don't hate flying honestly, but it's the most ridiculous form of travel to be so fully invested in. We're sending tin can tubes up into the sky thousands of times a day, and probably millions of times a year domestically. Of course bad shit is going to happen. Most domestic travel should be on trains, but we lack that infrastructure.

Nothing good happens on the Jersey turnpike. It is a forsaken land.
22

I refuse to take the turn pike. Tbh, depending on where you’re going taking the back roads is just as fast and more scenic when you incorporate all the traffic on the turnpike
5
wolf397d May 4, 2026 +6
The turnpike is vastly superior to the parkway through north jersey

Was there an Operational red beacon on the top of that light pole?? Pilots union wants to know.
4
spiritofjosh May 4, 2026 +3
I’m on the turnpike almost daily and have said a few times I’m surprised none of these planes clipped anything landing. Some of them hover over the turnpike like they’re looking to land on it

Had a blast with my toddler after we dropped my mom off at EWR last month (which is 2 hours away for us)--my car has a full moon roof, so I opened up the shad and he just sat in the car seat shouting at each plane that flew over the car, lol. Plus a stop at the Paramus IKEA on the way home for dinner and stretching his legs in the kids' shopping section, and it was 10/10 would recommend, despite the long car time.

Both cities I’ve lived in where the runway starts right next to a freeway, the light poles are much shorter than normal on that stretch of freeway. Was they not the case here?
1
PurpleSailor May 4, 2026 +1
The light polls there are only like 10 off the ground. Crazy that they hit a truck too, glad the driver is okay.
1
GeekFurious May 4, 2026 +1
Have driven past the airport hundreds of times and seen many low landings, but never one low enough to clip a light pole.
1
lemmylemonlemming May 4, 2026 +1
Damn. I've driven box trucks and watched how low those planes fly over and thought they were pretty damn low.

Bakery truck driver just set up his family with generational wealth and will never work a job again all while not suffering any significant injuries.
-3
GeekFurious May 4, 2026 +3
Not even a million dollars would do that... and no one gets even a million dollars from these things without a fatality.
3
fleemfleemfleemfleem May 4, 2026 +2
The driver looks pretty young. Say he got a million dollars and kept working until retirement age while a payout was invested earning an average of say 9% returns. He could retire while living off interest alone and still growing the principal and eventually leave behind tens of millions.
2
GeekFurious May 4, 2026 +2
Bro said "generational wealth," which is what I was referring to. 1 million is something you might get in a settlement if someone died. You could get more if you go to trial, but you could also get less.
2
WithRoyalBlood May 4, 2026 +2
Gotta love that every time something like this happens, people think that “near death experience” is a multi-million dollar cause of action.
2
BigBoyDrewAllar_15 May 4, 2026
I don’t think you understand how much debt lawyers are in they’ll cash out on this big time and he’s getting more than a million it’s New Jersey not some 3rd world state like Pennsylvania or Ohio where upper middle class is 35k
0
WithRoyalBlood May 4, 2026 +3
I don’t really know what the relevance of the weirdPA/Ohio/NJ comparison is but it really doesn’t affect the fundamental aspects of tort law. Suggesting this guy is getting a million dollar settlement for cuts and bruises is as ignorant as suggesting some large penalty for breaching a contract. It’s just a dead giveaway someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

-10
LGWalkway May 4, 2026 -9
I’ve honestly never understood why airports are so close to everything.
-9
JunkReallyMatters May 4, 2026 +10
They often build airports someplace and everything gradually creeps up close to them.
10
teachem4 May 4, 2026 +1
How do you think people get to the airport? You’ll never guess - roads!
1
LGWalkway May 4, 2026 -4
I think you’re misunderstanding. An airport shouldn’t be right next to a turnpike. The glide path shouldn’t be remotely close to roads like that. You could space things back a half mile away.
-4
sayn3ver May 4, 2026 +2
More often than not the airport existed previously. South Jersey has several small recreational airports. Almost all of them existed in remote rural areas when initially sited. And then developers have decided to build developments around them. No different than those who built homes around south jersey pig farms and then complained about the smell.
2
LGWalkway May 4, 2026 +1
But that’s the issue is most of these cases. You build things around them and make situations like this even possible. I’m not saying the airport was built close to everything, but like you mentioned, everything crept up to them.
1
CharacterSchedule700 May 4, 2026 +1
I also suspect that this particular road was established long before that particular runway ran right up to it. Maybe the issue is that we invest in our country's infrastructure as if a one-size fits all approach will work. These airports get overloaded with various flights - private jets, commercial passenger airlines, commercial freight companies, etc. If we were to take a more holistic approach and consider train travel (both freight and passenger) as a higher priority investment, the DOT could specific what types of planes are allowed in each airport and reduce the traffic demands & need for additional runways for those airports. These large urban airports should be almost exclusively large passenger planes flying in and out. There is no specific reason to have all the commercial freight traffic or smaller private jet traffic coming in as well - there are plenty of small airports in NJ, NY, PA, CT to handle the smaller planes. There is no specific reason to have commercial freight traffic flying in to EWR either. Specifically looking at NJ, the freight train network seems to be very weak or underutilized. They should be able to bring freight into the tri-state area through existing networks without needing to rely on Newark, JFK, or LGA for any freight. As another example, the airport in the small town I grew up in has a 10,000 foot runway. It's mostly used for the air force, but FedEx also uses it. There was not enough demand for passenger flights. However, it's pretty strange that there hasn't been any investment to hook the freight train network to the airport to take stress off other airports in the region. The town has great weather for flying: clear skies, no window, consistent temperatures, etc. But the US makes it so difficult to improve existing rail infrastructure that it just sits empty most of the time.

You seem to have no idea just how much cargo goes through those terminals on an hourly basis.
1
LGWalkway 6 days ago +1
I’m not saying build airports in the middle of nowhere. A plane shouldn’t be descending right above a turnpike to land. The videos show planes flying like 30 feet above the turnpike and this one flew lower and hit a light pole. Imagine if the airport had 1/4 more of a mile of space. This incident wouldn’t have occurred.
