A guy who built a following by screaming racial slurs and flashing guns online just shot someone in front of a courthouse. The internet's toxicity has real world consequences.

Eatherly has made a name for himself locally trying to get social media attention by taking video of himself using racial slurs against Black people, challenging them to fight back. District Attorney General Robert Nash said Eatherly was the one who opened fire, and Eatherly appears to have shot himself in the arm in the process. Eatherly was taken into custody and removed from the scene by ambulance. The victim was going to be flown by LifeFlight. His condition has not been released.

I wonder if the state is going to bring him up on attempted murder charges. He has a history of intentionally trying to provoke confrontations by spouting racial slurs, and went out armed into the community seeking confrontation. I would not be at all surprised if he was trying to create the circumstances under which he could shoot someone, because he feels that would enhance his popularity in the far-right spaces that like him. I was very obviously pissed to the point I was ready to fight. I said if one more m*********** says anything racist, get ready to throw down, 'cause you're about to get punched in the f****** mouth. It was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever experienced, and sadly I had to leave shortly thereafter since I had ousted myself and my threat had no effect on 'popular opinion'. In a better country/world, the legislation would have caught up with the 2020s and classified these asshats instigating violence on social media as the clear and present danger they are attempting to instigate calculated, pre-meditated violence/murder.

From the article and the charges against him, it appears that the cops do not believe this was a legal use of force to defend one’s self. Hope he has the book thrown at him.  He’s a bad example of a gun owner and people who behave like this give bad names to all the responsible gun owners.

Don't know the situation. But to be clear you are allowed to say racist things and not be attacked for it physically. That is certainly not okay. Hurt feelings should not lead to the right to do violence. If we allow them for one thing we need to potentially allow them for other things. Then suddenly every assault becomes potentially legal or any assault could be defended in court by the attacker claiming 'they said so and so, which justified my assault'. And unless it is proven they didn't, saying that they did may be enough for reasonable doubt of their guilt.
