Who knew giving the very rich a huge tax breaks then starting a $1B/day foreign war would have an adverse effect on the economy?

“Hey man I’m a GOP voter, I’m like super smart! You guys remember those dudes who told us trickle down economics was going to usher the middle class into a new era of economic prosperity, far better than we had it in the 1980s? Remember that, how it was a huge scam and all? Well those exact same eighty year olds in Congress NOW say they’re going to make us ‘Great’. I mean, when have they ever lied to me, except for that one time every day for forty years straight. And also for that middle eastern war that cost us 1.1 Trillion dollars over two decades that was started under false pretenses and achieved absolutely nothing. Could have had Cheney walk a pallet of money out onto the White House lawn and set it on fire every single morning for twenty years for all the good it did for Americans. Thank god none of that cash went to healthcare, social security longevity, Medicaid, or any of the other things they now pretend we can’t afford, am I right? We really dodged a bullet there. Boy thank god nobody will be dumb enough to do anything like THAT again. Anyway, this time those people, those exact same ones? They’re gonna make us ‘great again’, despite dedicating their entire careers to doing the opposite! I know, crazy right? My god I’m so f****** smart. I’ll race you to the polls!” - Conservatives

These people know this (or rather, conveniently forget it) when it comes time to vote, because the Republicans are "protecting" them against the Demoncraps who "Want us all dead(TM)". This is why if you pin them down with this, they will always come back with lies about how the liberals want completely open borders and destroy the police. They will state that Bill Clinton was friends with Jeffery Epstein, and that therefore the Democrats are no better, and at least the Republicans are trying to keep them safe. If you *really* pin them down, their response is that both sides are bad. They really believe that they are supporting the best side that they can.

Reminder that in 1984, endless war fighting was used as a means to expend resources **without improving the lives of citizens.** Remember that every time we remember how often the U.S. has been at war.

It's amazing that they won't spend $1B a day on health care They're SOOoooo obsessed with people working and productivity for profitability but they don't want people to be healthy enough to work
86
ohlookahipster Apr 10, 2026 +67
$1B a day could send an army of doctors and nurses through school *for free…* we would never have a shortage of providers again.
67

Historical-Bake2005 Apr 10, 2026 +7
The US spends around $6B a day on healthcare, and spends more on healthcare per person than most other developed nations. Not that it’s not money better spent than another new war, but the issue at this point isn’t really funding it’s the insurance racket and increased drug prices in the US vs. foreign countries.
7
dshookowsky Apr 11, 2026 +7
I expect to be down-voted for this, but I was AMAZED that I was able to get 3 months of my heart medicine (ticagrelor 90mg) shipped from costplusdrugs (owned by Mark Cuban) for $30 WITHOUT insurance. The previous month's supply was $300 WITH insurance (United Healthcare naturally). There are middle-men all the way through the system taking their cut and the insurance companies love it and encourage it because it increases how much they can collect.

For the longest time, they needed people to run the machines, do the paperwork, and to be active consumers participating in the economy. In this fucked up reality where nobody makes anything anymore and money sits in a stock market in the interest of speculative bullshit instead of circulating around to build and buy real things, and in an emerging reality where the things you do need to build can/will be automated without the need of people... what do you need people for exactly? The amount of people that are in line to be thrown out of work thanks to AI and automation is massive. What are you going to do with all of these people? What are they needed for? You need their money to buy things? Well yeah, but if everybody's operating costs go down because AI and machines don't draw paychecks, then you can take in less money too and still come out ahead. If you're a cashier and they no longer need you to be a cashier and no longer need you buying things either... then why do they want you around at all?

Well, it’s happened before and the proponents assured us that it was their opponents fault for not letting them go as far as they wanted to, so they went further doubling down this time with the knowledge that even more class warfare would usher in the golden age of prosperity.

Every Republican elected in my lifetime has crashed the economy and gone to war in the Middle East, but somehow convinces dipshits every 4 years that they're good for the economy and Democrats are the real warmongers.
2840
poopship462 Apr 10, 2026 +962
And when the next Dem gets elected and doesn’t fix EVERYTHING in a year or 2, they’ll turn around and vote Republican thinking they’ll fix everything.
962
VagrantShadow Apr 10, 2026 +526
It goes even deeper than that. If we do get a democrat in and they eventually fix our financial burdens, by the time re-election comes up and if a new republican gets in office. they'll claim all the victories that the democrat has done was really their own doing and they'll finally f*** our nation over again. It's like this neverending shitty ass cycle.

I like repubs talking about the roaring Bidenflation during Covid, when the checks thrown out to everyone literally had trumps signature on it. But it was some….Biden fault?
14
ChaosPheonix11 Apr 10, 2026 +5
Yup. I constantly heard about how Biden was ruining our economy meanwhile almost everything could be easily and conveniently explained by the tax and trade policies Cheeto Benito put in place that went into effect in 2019-2021. People don’t realize a new president (especially one that actually cares or appears to care about the processes and limits of the Executive Branch) can’t just snap his fingers and undo the damage a previous president did. It can take years to undo damage that takes days to cause when a bad leader is in power and doesn’t care about anyone but himself and the further consolidation of that power.

Elendel19 Apr 10, 2026 +261
Because democrats are really bad at messaging and focus too much on shit that no one actually sees in their life. Look at Mamdani. Fixing m massive numbers of potholes in a week, people see that every day. Free childcare, parents see that big time. And he’s f****** LOUD about it. He’s on the street talking to people and making constant streams of short form video showing it.
261
speakertothedamned Apr 10, 2026 +156
> Because democrats are really bad at messaging and focus too much on shit that no one actually sees in their life. Uh nah, Republicans and their corporate masters spend billions of dollars on propaganda campaigns. Universal health care and other things that Dems support and run on are actually WILDLY popular. It's not about the messaging, it's about the entire corporate system working against anyone that wants actual change.
156
Silver-Bread4668 Apr 10, 2026 +42
> It's not about the messaging, it's about the entire corporate system working against anyone that wants actual change. Oh it absolutely is about messaging but you are, otherwise, right - Republicans and their corporate masters spend billions of dollars on propaganda campaigns. It's profitable for the wealthy which makes it self-sustaining. It's hard to compete with that much money no matter how good or bad you are at messaging you are. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that the concept that "Democrats are bad at messaging" is directly the result of Republican messaging.
42
Elendel19 Apr 10, 2026 +18
Very few democrats support universal health care and no president has done it. No voters believe a democrat (or republican) will actually do it. We’re talking about what they actually DO while in power. The IRA and chips and sciences act were REALLY good, but 99.9% of voters have no idea what they are or have any clue how they will help in their own lives. Fixing potholes is better for your popularity than a generational project to take back advanced manufacturing from china.
18
speakertothedamned Apr 10, 2026 +62
> Very few democrats support universal health care This is objectively false. 90% of Democrats support universal healthcare. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/12/10/most-americans-say-government-has-a-responsibility-to-ensure-health-care-coverage/ Unless you're talking about Democratic politicians in which case over 100 house Dems cosponsored a universal healthcare bill literally just last year. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/3069/cosponsors Healthcare, housing, education, Dems have great ideas for all of them. Corporations and conservative interest groups hate all of their ideas though and fund Political Action Committees that spend billions of dollars on propaganda each year specifically designed to misinform Americans. Like the problem isn't "Dems suck at messaging," the problem is that Republicans get billions in free advertising while corpos work to suppress the left as hard as they can.
62
Knyfe-Wrench Apr 10, 2026 +12
>focus too much on shit that no one actually sees in their life That shit matters. Everyone should know after this past year that when you start hearing a lot about programs you've never heard of before that things are about to go bad. The democrats just need to be more vocal about the wins. If Trump can claim he stopped a thousand wars, the dems can at least brag about shit they *actually* did.
12
out_of_shape_hiker Apr 10, 2026 +11
Destroying education and villifying intelligence and experts was the long-con. It's easier to dupe uneducated, overly religous folk. This cycle won't stop till we have education reform and ensure everyone receives a quality education, atleast one good enough to instill the most basic form of critical thinking.
11
EndDangerous1308 Apr 10, 2026 +9
Not only that both Biden and Obama fixed our economy and Trump nuked them back immediately. Biden got us down to a 2.3% inflation rate AFTER the world economy collapsed in 3 years. Trump nuked it in 6 months
9
Politicsboringagain Apr 11, 2026 +5
Republicans voted against the infrastructure bill, then went home to their districts and took credit for the money coming in.
5
DrPorkchopES Apr 10, 2026 +5
It’s a shitty cycle but also sums up exactly how educated the average voter is. They basically look at their gas or grocery bill and give the credit/blame to whoever’s in office
5
PurpleSailor Apr 11, 2026 +4
The Republicans go back to their districts during recess and tout all the publicly funded projects that they themselves actually voted against but their stupid constituents are none the wiser. Works every goddamn time.
4
naptown-hooly Apr 10, 2026 +62
Don't forget the Democratic President has to raise taxes to cover the debt incurred by the Republican President and now raising taxes and debt are the problem caused by Democrats.
62

Lets tax the rich.
6
CranberryLast4683 Apr 10, 2026 +26
And it’s crazy that republicans will bake in poison pills into legislation such that things expire at the right time so that Dems get blamed (e.g Trump tax cuts expiring) and then dumbass Americans fall for it.
26
CardinalM1 Apr 10, 2026 +11
They'll also point to some random government expense like $1 million for research to prevent suicide in LGBT teens and use that to claim Democrats spend recklessly, meanwhile forgetting the $1 billion Republicans spent per day to bomb Iran. Americans are terrible with math so they fall for it every single time.
11
Saneless Apr 10, 2026 +28
We're what, 4/4 for the last 4 Republicans starting a war in the middle east? Even further back?
28
eeyore134 Apr 10, 2026 +25
They have a base who consistently votes for them no matter what. The problem is they're good at fracturing Democrats who actually care who they're voting for. And when that started not being enough, well they've also been really good at gerrymandering and fighting close elections until the other side gives in. And when that started not being enough, well they just started to outright cheat.
25
flirtmcdudes Apr 10, 2026 +6
it’s because US media all supports republicans and enables them. Trump made it obvious how differently they covered Biden’s mental health to trumps.

Dust601 Apr 10, 2026 +64
Yup, we’ve all seen this play out over, and over again at this point. There’s a reason they scheduled the worst of the Medicare cuts in that big ugly bill until after the midterms. If all the plans to rig the elections fail they wanna make sure they can blame something on the dems if they take over.
64
ohlookahipster Apr 10, 2026 +33
Yep. Just watch. When Dems sweep the midterms, SUDDENLY it’s all about the deficit and excessive spending. There’s also foamers and copers on Insta saying “it was worse under Biden.”

smexypelican Apr 10, 2026 +6
I know you didn't ask for advice, but may I gently suggest learning to cook some basics to save money. Learn from youtube! Spaghetti sauce for example, or however you use that pasta sauce. You can cook a big pot of spaghetti sauce for maybe $10 worth of ingredients. Another example, chicken legs have been selling for $0.69/lb for several years now at a local grocery store. That can translate to a lot of protein on the table for very little money if you know what to do with it. Cooking is a great life skill that makes you healthier and saves you a lot of money in the long run. Plus you'll be able to impress people.

10 years into this cult and it's still wild to me how they can instantly 180 "their opinion" without any ill effects or questions. I'm old enough to remember a year and a half ago when god emperor Trump was promising to lower prices on day one, and Joe Biden was evil because inflation. Now paying more patriotic, the word affordability is a democrat hoax, and also it's all Joe Biden's fault.

0.9% month-over-month is 11.3% on an annualized basis. Compare that to a 2% annual target.
161
skibum888 Apr 10, 2026 +24
The article is pay walled. What's the metric? 0.9% MoM Cpi, Ppi, or Pce?
24
True-Industry-4057 Apr 10, 2026 +38
0.9% MoM CPI, +3.3% YoY CPI. PCE is +0.2% MoM (+2.4% annualized), +2.6% YoY.

12
True-Industry-4057 Apr 10, 2026 +9
No problem!
9
userhwon Apr 10, 2026 +5
Annualized it's 10.8%. Compounded it's more, depending on how often you compound it.
5
True-Industry-4057 Apr 10, 2026 +3
Isn't annualization of a monthly percentage growth figure compounded monthly by definition?
3
userhwon Apr 10, 2026 +4
No. APR is "annualized" rather than "annual". You divide APR by the number of periods, then compound it on that period for unpaid principal. Credit cards compound monthly. The IRS compounds daily. I can't at the moment think of anybody who compounds continuously in practice. It's a weird system, but it avoids having to take the Nth root, which for a lot of reasons is too complicated for a lot of people. People who can do it can also deal with annualized vs annual.

I wish chicken was that c**** over here *(Canada)*, I'm looking at like $16 for eight drumsticks essentially. I only buy pork sausages or ground pork now, it's literally the only meat I can afford around here.
18
naked_as_a_jaybird Apr 10, 2026 +10
It's the deli counter chicken that the store cuts up themselves. The Purdue and packaged chicken remains insanely priced like everything else here (US/MX border).
10
exoriparian Apr 10, 2026 +6
That must be HEAVILY region dependant.  Sliced chicken is like $14 a pound here, and it's been high for years.  Turkey is always far cheaper.
6
dead_dw4rf Apr 10, 2026 +8
Salmon is cheaper than beef now
8
jomofro39 Apr 10, 2026 +8
Yeah don’t eat beef it’s the least economic protein widely available.
8
Thebazilly Apr 10, 2026 +4
Beef prices are absurd right now. I'm not buying it any more.

Dazzling-Slide8288 Apr 10, 2026 +248
I don't really have an issue with the headline, but trying to imagine the worldwide shitstorm that would occur if a Democratic president started a pointless, idiotic war (that he lost, totally and immediately) that destroyed the economy more than his other actions already have. I somehow doubt "Prices surge as expected" would be the categorization.

Not to mention if his wife went onstage press conference unasked and said that she did not sleep with Epstein. Imagine Michelle doing that ...

matt-er-of-fact Apr 10, 2026 +15
They tariffed raw materials US companies use to manufacture their products. They made the best option to engineer around the restrictions and import assembled or semi-finished goods. It’s ok tho, *real* American companies will buy an exemption.

I haven’t gotten a raise at all in almost 3 years and my pay is expected to be *cut* somewhere between 8 and 25% next month because of AI costs. Makes my blood boil.

Bro what. Quit that shit and find a different job
14
matt-er-of-fact Apr 10, 2026 +19
Hiring has slowed or stalled for many companies and tech is straight up firing thousands. Others are doing shit like this because they know it’s hard to find jobs right now.
19
Worthyness Apr 10, 2026 +9
Yesh there arent any of those new jobs either depending on sector. Pretty sure the only industry actively growing is health, which has some qualifications that others may not have.

So much for those egg prices going down.
26
RepublicHistorical23 Apr 10, 2026 +6
Isn't it funny that, at least around where I live, egg prices have come down and stayed down. MAGA probably thought they really won with that one, while everything else went way up. Art of the deal to them I guess. Gee maybe there was something to the Bird Flu and Covid causing egg prices to go up. Nah. Must have been a Biden conspiracy all along, right MAGA ?
6
cybah Apr 10, 2026 +3
Yeah I just bought a dozen last week and paid a pretty nominal price.

My company had a huge layoff and are in the milddle of of a cost cutting spree. Our group had two buildings and now we are getting rid of one and will have to squeeze everyone into one building. We has so much equipment that we have put in a request for carts so we can move it around when needed because we no longer have space to have it all out at once. We can only have it out when in use and then have to wheel it into a warehouse so that other instruments can be used

41
Adinnieken Apr 10, 2026 +17
Of course it is. Joe Biden and the Democrats' shadow government is behind all of this. The deep state is well hidden from the glare of even the brightest spotlight. Like cochroaches, Democrats scatter and hide, but when the light on them fades they come out. Trump had no intention of going to war, he's a peace loving leader. It was the Democrats that push Trump to war. Not only encouraging him to do so, but by encouraging the Iranians to build stockpiles of nuclear weapons. The level to which Joe Biden personally has gone, the lengths to which he seems to insist on going to undermine Trump is only made more incidious by his complete lack of silence. Trump and his administration is simply helpless and incapable of doing anything to counter the diabolical nature of Biden and his shadow government as they work to undermine and decapitate his efforts. /S

This Trumpflation and the Trump/Epstein tax is worse than it was when he shut down the economy during the Pandemic and ignored the supply chain crisis in 2020.

>Both core CPI and PCE inflation have been driven by businesses passing on some of Trump's broad tariffs to consumers, offsetting the disinflationary trend in rents. lol. Thanks tRump. Btw, oil shock effects in CPI and PCE is expected to show in the broader global economy starting from the April data. The current deterioration in the economy is just due to the plain idiocratic governance of Trump and his goons.

It's strange that they of appear to be using a lot of photos from Costco which tends to keep their prices relatively stable during inflation/ crisis

if inflation hits 4% then we may see a rate increase. then the economy is truly fucked. meanwhile growth was revised down to 0.5% last quarter. Welcome to Trump Stagflation. Even doctored numbers can't hide it.

Oh, I sure hope our politicians give themselves a healthy cost of living raise! They work so hard with all the social media posting and being told how to think and letting grandpa run rampant. Thank the gods they never have to worry about health insurance.

*"The White House on Friday sought to shift focus from gasoline prices, posting on social media that "prices of eggs, beef, prescription drugs, dairy and other household essentials are falling or remain stable thanks to President Trump's policies."* Beef prices have *not* fallen, when ground beef is $7 a pound.
