US Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Michigan should join 27 other states in a program that lets taxpayers pour money into scholarships for students to attend public or private schools.

I don't know what this is but Republicans surely do not care about education or about benefitting families. If they did, they wouldn't be forcing student borrowers into worse repayment plan options and limiting student loan availability, so whatever this is either benefits the wealthy or suppresses the poor.

It seems like the goal is to funnel money away from public schools into private schools.

Overcomplicated. But I see two things: Will increase spending and enrollment in private schools. Will increase spending on education - from the federal balance sheet.  Other effects are harder to predict.  Probably inefficient / elevated admin costs burn.
