Let's not forget that Republicans in Congress are all on record supporting the war and last year, in the midst of an affordability crisis, voted to gut Medicaid, SNAP, health care and energy tax credits to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. Gas is up and so is everything else, shocking...

Here's my deranged conspiracy theory (as a foreign observer of US politics; previously out of curiosity, now as a sick f*****): f*** things up so badly now that Congress goes completely blue, Congress blocks further "progress" but everything gets tied up in the Supreme Court and spend two years blaming house Dems for a worsening situation enough to cause a Republican backlash at the 2028 presidential election, just in time for phase 3 of the dictatorship project.

That's not a conspiracy theory, that's how it's historically worked *every time*.
Rs run up debt, Ds come in and have to cut things or raise taxes to fix the damage done and try to implement new policies. Rs hold things hostage until the Ds new policies are a shell of the original plan.
Rs run on Ds raising prices and not getting anything useful done. Win. Once back in, they cut those programs to give out more tax breaks, cut protections to 'stimulate business', and run up the debt giving out tax breaks again. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Trump said the deficit was horrible and Biden was responsible (only part of it) and we HAD to lower it and tariffs would be great for it, along with massive gov cuts, mainly to social programs. Now he wants to massively jack up defense spending. This goes along with tax cuts for the wealthy who don't need them. So much for the deficit.

So come in and raise taxes on the top 2%, and tax capital gains beyond principal housing at 100% of regular income. Stop letting corporations defer taxation and call in their outstanding year over year deferrals. Create a sovereign wealth fund funded by carbon taxation that invests in green energy infrastructure projects.

Yeah everyone who ever asked why they tied themselves to Trump, "the courts" is the answer. They saw an opportunity to remake the entire judiciary so that no matter what might happen with voting patterns over the next couple decades they still have power. And, as ever, the electorate will always blame Democrats for not being able to unfuck the mess fast enough so they'll bring back the mess makers to teach them a lesson and the whole process will begin again from an even worse starting point. Dems think in cycles; GOP thinks in decades.

Republicans love sales taxes (and tariffs are a sales tax) because it passes the burden onto the lower and middle class. They hate income taxes because the upper class has to pay more. Also, sales taxes are spread out so you don't notice them as much as income taxes that are an annual lump sum.

Six of the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies are on track to make almost $3,000 in profits every single second this year, according to a new report, as households across the world grapple with soaring energy prices and inflation, which are driving a cost-of-living crisis.
Chevron, Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips, Exxon and TotalEnergies will make $2,967 a second in profits in 2026, an analysis from the non-profit Oxfam International has found. It marks an increase of nearly $37 million a day compared to their 2025 profits.
The total projected fossil fuel profits for 2026 for all six companies stand at approximately $94 billion, the analysis found.

Our fossil fuel addiction is killing us. Yes we cannot get off all oil and gas especially in the short term but we absolutely can work to reduce usage which means these supply shocks will be less harmful.
Invest in electrification of transport (or just cut tariffs on EVs) as well as energy that can be produced domestically like nuclear, wind, solar and geothermal. Cities should increase public transit options as well as bike lanes and car alternatives. Businesses shouldn't be required to provide free parking to customers.

There is a reason why republicans want to paint clean energy as a sinful, dirty word. They'd rather have their constituents stay addicted to fossil fuel. They want you to embrace clean coal, it's good for you. It reminds me of the 1950's where there were advertisements with so called medical doctors that would say smoking is good for your body, heart, lungs, and soul. They'd tell you in the ads that you should light up a few cigs after work, you'd be doing your body a favor.
We are in the same cycle. Same shit, different generation.
229
Alex5173May 1, 2026

The reason they like coal and gas isn't because it makes them oodles of money, it's because they *can't* make oodles of money on wind and solar. Coal and oil are finite resources that take an enormous amount of work to extract, transport, and in the case of oil refine. **They can, and will, charge you for all of that.**
It will be difficult as hell to make the same stupid disgusting profits when the "fuel" literally falls out of the sky and the infrastructure is paid for.

The longer they remain in power the more difficult it is to advance, to gain the innovations and progress we've left behind. There will be a point where it becomes too late and we won't be able to prevent a crisis of energy or water or food or etc. Hell, we might have already passed that point.

There is a limited supply and a demand for oil. If you reduce the supply there isn't enough oil to go around for everyone. The oil there is goes to the highest bidder which makes the prices go up. As the expenditures of the oil companies don't go up their profits will increase as a result.
Even if you ignore the prices, there just isn't enough oil to meet demand so someone will have to reduce their consumption. Prices are they way that this happens in the market. At some point someone will be priced out and are forced to reduce their consumption.

I was trying to explain that concept to somebody.
I've worked at a gas station for decades in the past, and lived thru the trends ( started when gas was measly 49 cents a gallon).
But diesel is an infrastructure fuel. Everything gets moved around by diesel trucks, trains, and ships. so when diesel is high and stays high, you know that the gas prices are going to follow. Same if diesel prices go down, but the fuel companies will just keep the price high ...
23
Soft_Entry_4440May 1, 2026

It's more than just transportation too - a lot of non gas products are made with oil, including fertilizers and petrochemicals. When the price of a barrel of oil goes up significantly overnight it affects those products which are feedstock for a lot of things.
Producers overseas aren't even taking orders and/or raising prices significantly at the moment. March and April are going to be good sales months, but once all the landed cheaper inventory is gone prices are going up in a few months.

People thought the tariffs were to increase domestic production/sales. If we can't afford to buy foreign, we'll buy US. Great. Except *we don't have it*, and it takes *years* to develop that production, and that's *if* the companies want to make the effort to do so, which they *do not* because Trump won't be in power forever (I hope?!) and he was going back and forth on the tariffs from one day to the next.
So the better times *are not coming*, not without getting rid of the people in power and ideally overhauling the political parties and some of the political system. Trump fucked up the economy to benefit himself and his buddies--*the end*. We're suffering for *no benefit*. When a mugger takes all your money, there's no "long-term plan" that will ultimately benefit you. He has your money, and you have nothing. The end. But at least with a mugger, you're a true victim of a bad person. In the US, millions *mugged themselves*.

It's gonna hit $5+ over the summer for sure (national average). Thing is when it ends up being $5+ in places like Oklahoma (where its typically the cheapest) THEN people will get pissed, Red state voter or not.
A long summer of $6-8/gal gas and everyone will be ready to flip out.
People are garbage and are ok with a lot of horrible stuff until it impacts them personally. End of the day people vote with their wallet.

I wish I had your optimism.
In Ohio we’ve had multiple recent items on the ballot that when polled, have 80% approval, but when the vote comes they fail because their Party told them not to vote for it.
And then the Rs run on the Ds causing the issue to fail… when the state has been under R control in every branch for the past 20 years.

What's always baffling to me is that when Biden was in office, the tiniest hint that inflation could exceed analyst expectations by .01 percent would send the markets diving.
This deranged, incompetent a****** has purposely drove up costs via tariffs, driven energy prices to highs not seen in years and threatens the domestic economy with a fascist police state and Wall Street doesn't even flinch.
My personal conspiracy theory is that these wealthy wall street criminals and market makers simply love this "white collar crime is legal" era of Trump corruption and the markets will only turn down when Democrats take control in the midterms, which will sway public opinion and we'll repeat this same cycle all over again.

This is the “two Santa’s” strategy that Republicans have been running since Reagan. When a Republican is in office they cut taxes (mostly for the rich, but smaller temporary cuts for everyone else), lower interest rates, and drive up the national debt. In the short term this makes the economy *feel* like it’s doing alright to the average person. Then when a Democrat is in office Republicans scream about the national debt and inflation while simultaneously accusing Democrats of ruining the economy when they raise taxes, raise interest rates, and try to balance the books. It’s puts Democrats in a catch 22 situation where they either cave in to maintain stability, or they double down to call the GOPs bluff and risk the entire situation exploding. Democrats consistently choosing the first option is why things have deteriorated to the point we’re at now.
Republicans also have total control of the mainstream media narrative now, so it’s even easier for them to get away with compared to before.

3..2...1 Toyota revives Scion and makes small cars again without the edgy styling. Honda makes the Fit and Hyundai revives Accent station wagons. About time for automakers to abandon going all in on dumbass SUVs. The first automaker launching sub-$25k cars getting 40+ mpg will make lots of money. IIRC there's currently the Corolla and Sentra. Make c**** small cars again!!

Went to grab a few groceries last night and took a look at some prices of nice-to-haves alongside the usual suspects. Holy hell everything is so expensive, I just didn't even bother. I like those Belvita crackers with the chocolate in the middle, a box of 12 was $9. $0.75 per sugar snack is just not worth it. I used to buy these for maybe $6. No, this is not necessary and the other things I bought (milk and. yogurt) were equally ridiculous, but my point is, I've been cutting back significantly just to keep the grocery bill around what it was before.
It's not just gas, it's literally everything that gets driven around. So, everything.
So exhausted of this.

As of today the war is officially illegal. Congress hasn't granted (nor has Trump requested) a 30 day extension nor has Congress passed a resolution legalizing the war. Media outlets know this, it should be in every headline.
