The key here is that food, fuel and consumer staples are through the roof... 3.8% is going to feel like 10-15% for many people.
6499
Any-Progress- May 12, 2026 +1237
Plus everything was already expensive, so a percentage of a high number is much more than that same percentage of a lower number. 10% of $10 is $1. 10% of $100 is $10. 3.8% inflation is not the same as it would be 5 years ago, and that’s just getting worse.

No one’s picking up a gun while they can still go home after their horrible job and turn on the AC and Netflix and order door dash. The powers that be are straining the populace and the system to keep them right where they are: weak and tired and just worn out, but with enough comfort to keep everyone complacent. Won’t be until the system is accelerated into collapse that people will finally feel resigned to putting up a fight, after they’ve lost what little they have left, and honestly maybe not even then.

Always thankful I'm not a truck guy and need to drive a gas guzzling Dodge Ram. But in definitely feeling staple prices going through the roof. Plus utility bills, property taxes, insurance all shot up much further than 3.8% for me.

lufan132 May 12, 2026 +343
I'm in a sedan and that already hurts enough. Can't believe I'd be on the market for a hybrid at some point in the near future if I can somehow find the money just in the event we don't riot at high prices (legit I wanna go break things anything over 3 bucks is already absurd for the amount of oil we control, but five bucks a gallon is extortionate)

StableLamp May 12, 2026 +169
I drive a gas car and plan to do so until it breaks down but my next car will likely be full electric.
169
DuncanFisher69 May 12, 2026 +130
Honestly a used Electric is crazy c**** right now. I saw a 2024 Honda Prologue with AWD and only 2k miles on it going for $21k. It’s a $50k SUV. Crazy. Driving electric, if you can charge at home, is like driving at $9/tank.

SlitSlam_2017 May 12, 2026 +66
My rate is .074 KWH, my Lightning has a 132kwh battery. Life is good in that regard for now
66
jshah500 May 13, 2026 +44
Same. My rate is .045 KWH and I have the same lightning. It's nice to fill up the whole tank for $3-4.
44
SilverKnightOfMagic May 12, 2026 +97
yeah 50 to 60 bucks for a full tank on my civic feels insane. definitely going electric next car
97
justaguytrying2getby May 12, 2026 +58
It's nice, I won't go back to a gas car. I've had an Ioniq 5 since 2024. I drive 50 miles per day on average and it costs me $20 per month to charge at home. My electricity is about 9 cents per kwh.
58
Perfect_Earth_8070 May 12, 2026 +124
Yep. I just got a cola raise of 3.25%. With the increase of my insurance premiums, and inflation, I’ve actually gotten a paycut

Yeah housing has been pretty stable for the last few years but just general day to day living is getting unbearably expensive.  A lot of people are insulated from inflation on things like cars or housing. But nobody is insulated from energy prices and food. This is gonna be like a runaway freight train. And good luck having Trump do the right thing like Biden did supporting higher rates.
91
ephenssta29 May 12, 2026 +51
We've definitely felt this over the last year. Early this year, maybe January or February, we got something from our energy company congratulating us on using 10% less energy that month than we did the year before. The bill was one of our most expensive yet. Two weeks ago, we were doing our grocery shopping and the wife said something about how we already have taco shells at home, we could get ground beef for an easy meal on a lazy night. She picks up a pound, sees it's $12, and says nevermind.

DanThePepperMan May 12, 2026 +88
I needed to run a few outlets in my garage including a 240v for a welder...I called several electricians and they said they could basically start tomorrow. A couple years ago it would have been at least a 4 weekish wait.

EllemNovelli May 13, 2026 +10
My wife is a union carpenter. Pretty much everyone she knows is unemployed. The out of work list at the union hall is like a mile long. She was number 300 something on that list after her last job ended. Previously we thought being 150 on the list was a sign of a major slowdown... Thankfully she was referred to her current job by someone she knew and is now on a long term project. The trades are really hurting for work. No one is building or remodeling right now.

lordpanda May 12, 2026 +46
They don't really cook the numbers they just look at what the market expects and then post that exact number. No calculation whatsoever. It's been that way since Trump fired the chief statistician at the BLS and put that clown Wiatrowski in charge.
46
PrefersEarlGrey May 12, 2026 +135
BLS labor report for February was revised down to 156,000 jobs lost, 3.8% inflation is the tip of the iceberg.
135
zxern May 13, 2026 +21
Can’t wait for June to roll around and March to be revised down to net -150k too.
21
McCloudX May 12, 2026 +690
3.8% might still be on the low end
690
oh_shaw May 12, 2026 +133
The BLS's 1983 and 1990 changes to CPI especially 'geometric weighting' and 'owner’s equivalent rent' substantially reduced official inflation based on CPI. True inflation is much higher.
133
Responsible_Gene_163 May 13, 2026 +63
Because you’re feeling the cumulative 19-20% price increase since 2021, plus the specific categories you buy (food, insurance, rent) have risen much faster than 3.8% in the last year. The CPI basket gives lower weight to things that have exploded in price, and higher weight to things that have stabilized. It’s also not an accurate measure you have to account for substitution bias not everyone buys the same goods, quality bias doesn’t account for ex: say Honda adds a new modern Apple Music radio and leather seats to base model c**** car the cost of that isn’t factored in yet. Let’s see what else oh yeah new product entrants and outlet bias not everyone shops at the same stores. It’s a very flawed metric.

Cutting the fed gas tax is going to make this so much better (NOT) - a massive decrease in the budget available for road maintenance which means that the bumps will get bigger and damage to cars and trucks will hit us even harder than the 18 cents we will be “saving”. This is Absurd Economics. A good start and simple solution is, First: Stop the war and save a billion a day. Second: Quit the presidency, you suck as a ‘president’.
155
Visual_Fly_9638 May 12, 2026 +49
IIRC McCain proposed that back during the housing crisis and it was not taken seriously. Someone needs to let Trump know that he's proposing a loser McCain proposal and he'll back off of it probably.

This. This absolutely boggles my mind. Talking about shooting someone in the middle of a street and getting away with it. Publicly mocking a persons disability on tv. Bragging about grabbing women “by the p****” and doing whatever he wants because he’s a star. And this was all before elections. I’m sorry, the writing has been on the wall, no one that voted for him gets to claim ignorance as an excuse.

50
Visual_Fly_9638 May 12, 2026 +61
That's the point. The Peter Thiels of the world think we're a mistake that needs to be ended and cleaned up. Project 2025's main author literally wants to take away arts & entertainment and quality of life for most americans and leave them hard labor factory jobs and their only respite will be breeding. Like, that's not hyperbole, that's what he wrote in his book where he put the real aims of Project 2025 that were so odious that he couldn't put them in that already odious document. Capitalists hate capitalism and would prefer feudalism.
61
nerfedbeyblade May 12, 2026 +63
Even some MAGA people I know literally switched sides just due to Frump's 'Big Beautiful Bullshit'
63
realTArthur May 12, 2026 +178
These people that you speak of, ask who they are voting for in the midterms. While Trump is the president and rightfully the focus of everyone’s attention, the GOP in congress are just as guilty. They wrote and voted for the ‘Big Beautiful Bullshit’ and they have stood down on essentially everything else, giving Trump a free pass on everything. If they tell you that they plan to vote for the GOP, they haven’t learned their lesson…
178
Gimme_The_Loot May 12, 2026 +103
100% pretty much none of what trump is doing would even be possible without the compliance of Congress. No pushback, just lickspittle sycophants.

Straight-ticket GOP voters are quite literally incapable of learning lessons. They'll keep pulling that lever, they'll keep getting fucked over and they'll keep blaming everyone but themselves.

29
porscheblack May 12, 2026 +14
It probably has a lot to do with how things are impacting the area. I'm in a pretty purple area and I see Trump shit around. But we're a pretty well off area and I'm sure a whole lot of people (myself included) benefitted from the tax cuts. But really rural communities that more or less wholesale experienced medical insurance increases, gas price increases, tax increases and cuts to local programs? I could see it.
14
keelhaulrose May 12, 2026 +13
I've been seeing Trump stuff in Illinois, but I think part of that is the fact that our state has shielded us from some of the worst of Trump's bullshit. We got hit hard by ICE, but they were in blue areas. We still have the price increases, but Pritzker and the legislature helped soften some of the blows. It didn't hurt as bad for us as it did for my in-laws in Iowa, for example, who have soured on Trump because they lost their health insurance and are at risk off losing their farm.

65
cougrrr May 13, 2026 +10
Well, yeah. That inflation level hits every layer/cost generator in the entire chain (from seed to consumption), including all the transportation costs and production, preparation, etc. Pair to that "line goes up" economics requiring all the giant companies to continually turn record profits (because line goes up) to make the economy "look" good to some people even if people are massively hurting you've got an inflation snake eating itself, causing more inflation, but we get to sit in public hearings and say things are okay (economic or otherwise) because "The DOW is over 50,000"

I’ve got MAGA coworkers who literally believe only the “facts” as presented by Fox News. Confronted with these inflation realities, they quite literally shift the blame to the state governor (Democrat) or offer up the old standby: “fake news”

GayForPay May 12, 2026 +219
It's all a stupid front to protect their egos. They know it's not fake when they fuel up though.

Upstairs_Baby8424 May 12, 2026 +114
It’s to protect their identity. Way too many Republicans (read:80-90%) have built their political and often personal identity around supporting Trump. It makes them feel special and part of an in-group. An in-group that shuns anyone that even utters a small disagreement with the president. So they can’t admit fault on him because that’s their identity and they don’t want to feel like they’re out of their pack. It’s so obvious to anyone that has close family that are MAGA. It literally pains them to even speak one piece of criticism on Trump because it directly impacts their personal identity and sense of community.

Didn’t they say something about a little pain now for gain later at the beginning of the year? Ask them how thats coming along.

We just need to keep raising prices until the computers, complicated things you know, hit something called "integer overflow". Nobody knows how complicated the economy is, because a lot of it is done with computers. Darren Mobil, CEO of Exxon Mobil, very smart man, very good with business, tells me that. We just need to stick with it to lower the prices from sleepy Joe. The prices, it'll all just go down to zero, just like magic. We'll be winning so much, you wouldn't even believe. ... Alright, now to go throw up because doing an impression of pudding for brains is still too much for me.

Pete-PDX May 12, 2026 +85
was talking to my mother about plane tickets and that they are higher because of gas prices, without a missing a beat she says well gas prices were higher two years ago. Which has nothing do to with gas prices today but she is so brainwashed hearing that over and over that is where her thoughts immediately went.
85
unpluggedcord May 12, 2026 +81
THose prices were higher for different reasons on a macro level. These prices are high for one single reason. Trump attacked Iran.
81
Largofarburn May 12, 2026 +51
They’re not even higher. Gas is averaging $4.30ish where I am and I think the previous peak was like $3.70ish. And higher gas prices will make anything that moves by truck more expensive. Which spoiler alert, is everything. Places are just absorbing that cost for now. But they won’t do that forever. And it’s not looking like things are gonna get better anytime soon.
51
Perfect_Earth_8070 May 12, 2026 +27
Gas prices were definitely not higher two years ago
27
ToonMaster21 May 12, 2026 +54
I’m STILL hearing “this admin is still trying to get prices down after that sleepy Joe handed out all the free money during that fake COVID bullshit”, and people say it and mean it.
54
jigokubi May 12, 2026 +30
Did you remind them of those checks with Trump's name splashed all over them? Or that the additional $2000 enacted under Biden was literally his idea?
30
ToonMaster21 May 12, 2026 +31
You can’t remind them of anything.
31
Deep-Assignment4124 May 12, 2026 +11
I had somebody blame the governor for not getting FEMA assistance.  I asked “do you know what the first letter in FEMA means?”  Crickets.
11
mandalore237 May 12, 2026 +24
I live in a red state that hasn't had a dem governor in 30 years and the idiots here still blame the dems for everything. Gotta hurt every time they fill up their giant diesel truck 😂

stocksjunkey1 May 12, 2026 +66
Why does it feel like inflation is a lot higher.

TintedApostle May 12, 2026 +60
Because it is....

Lonely_Noyaaa May 12, 2026 +55
Airfares are up 20.7% and food prices jumped 3.8%. Even electricity and utilities rose 5.4%.

Before the war started, we would technically have been in a recession if it wasn’t for ai spending, now we got this energy crisis and ai data center construction silently slowing down. Yummy black swan

biznash May 12, 2026 +248
when people were putting Biden stickers on gas pumps, it wasn’t really Biden directly increasing gas prices. inflation was slowly creeping up due to past administration actions. and inflation was hitting all consumer goods, not just gas what’s funny (sad, ironic, listen up repubs) is that Trump did the ONE thing you could do that would directly increase gas prices. Go to a war with Iran and not account for what they might do as a result. His short-sighted military action, for which neither the voting public nor congress got any say, directly caused gas prices to skyrocket. cause and effect
248
BAF_DaWg82 May 12, 2026 +91
Russia invading Ukraine was another big reason gas went up while Biden was in office.
91
3-DMan May 12, 2026 +112
Yeah I remember explaining to someone the President really can't effect gas prices that much, so don't vote based on that. Trump sure made me eat my words!
112
biznash May 12, 2026 +75
99% of the time they can’t he did probably the ONE action that would raise gas prices it’s just like how dude went bankrupt a bunch (while running a c*****?!) and how he tanked his fortune from his papa. had he just invested he would have been way more wealthy than all his get rich quick schemes that is until he got a second term and more idiots started funneling him crypto money. now all bets are off.
75
SilverKnightOfMagic May 12, 2026 +24
dude literally could have been doing nothing and would have made money lol. like casinos prey on seniors and their monthly retirement checks for a reason.
24
CaptainKirk28 May 12, 2026 +21
I am seeing a lot more Trump stickers at the pump than I ever saw Biden stickers. And I live in West Virginia

Deodorant was 11.99 for a single stick. Ground beef 80/20 was 8.99. Shit is ridiculous. So much winning.
41
DivineLintervention May 12, 2026 +12
In California two days ago I paid $16 for 1lb of 96% ground beef. Absurd

They will still say that the economy is booming, never in history been this good, blah blah blah. Rich are getting richer, that's it

Just wait. The talking mango has said "I don't think about American financial situation — I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon" We fucked.

Glad I got that 3% raise earlier this year. So now I'm actually making less. Awesome.
15
Bacchus1976 May 13, 2026 +15
$9.99 for a standard (shrink-flation affected) bag of Tostitos or Doritos at my grocery store. Pre-Trump this was $3.29 retail, no sales. Anyone that blames COVID or supply chain issues is a liar. The data is being manipulated and while these examples are not essentials, they make for a very easy side-by-side benchmark because the cost is almost entirely transportation and markup.
15
Salt_Reputation_9864 May 13, 2026 +14
That Obama is at it again!
14
HedgeMoney May 12, 2026 +15
I'm surprised its only 3.8%.

They’re cooking the data, we all know it. Anyone who believes these numbers is a fool. It's much higher.
13
tocamix90 May 12, 2026 +11
I can’t believe a massive quick jolt in gas/oil is sparking higher prices across-the-board.
11
ClimateWren2 May 13, 2026 +10
Republicans breaking the entire INFLATION REDUCTION ACT and giving that $$$ to billionaires... ...was the most insane and catastrophic policy I have ever seen. Then they stacked more idiocy, incompetence, negligence, war, and utter nonsense on top. We are in trouble.
10
Purx777 May 13, 2026 +12
Most raises aren’t that high, gonna make less next year with higher cost of living
