Exclusive: US intelligence assesses Iran maintains significant missile launching capability, sources say | CNN Politics
Roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers are still intact and thousands of one-way attack drones remain in Iran’s arsenal despite the daily pounding by US and Israeli strikes against military targets over the past five weeks, according to recent US intelligence assessments, three sources familiar with the intel told CNN.

What gave it away? The fact that they keep launching missiles every f****** day?
444
G0U_LimitingFactor Apr 3, 2026 +56
Certainly not that they were producing extra drones for Russia for years beforehand
56
Archiver_test4 Apr 3, 2026 +8
the fact that when iran was showcasing their indigenous missile tech, their drone tech, everyone was laughing their assess off. oh the poor iranians and their unguided missiles. See what that got them now

that was 2-3 weeks ago... just like he'd have plans for replacing the ACA in 2 weeks. Then he'll have a concept of a plan. Then he'll do something else with hopes you forget that 2-3 week timetable.

Only because Americans don't march on the White House and end it. A large enough march and this is over in a week. A general strike and total boycott of ANY economic activity and this is over in a couple weeks. It sucks how f****** weak Americans are.
17
tech_noir_guitar Apr 3, 2026 +1
Another march isn't going to do anything. People have been marching and they don't give a shit. Until it has some kind of tangible affect on them it's not going to make any difference. Part of me wonders if the right isn't behind some of these marches just to make sure frustrated people have some outlet for their anger instead of actually doing something that will make a difference. A way to keep people busy without causing enough of a stir to matter.
1
Positive_Total_8651 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Yeah people really need to think a bit harder about this whole situation than just protesting. What is a march on DC realistically going to accomplish? I mean *realistically and pragmatically*? Trump will ignore it, outside of maybe tweeting some snide remark about it or sending police goons to antagonize. Congress will ignore it. It is literally yelling into a *void* because people seriously cannot accept that we are in an authoritarian oligarchy. Not in the stages of, not getting to the point of, we are already there. Millions of *voices* do not reach deaf ears. And that is *not* to be a doomer. People are eventually going to need to accept that the norms are gone already and are going to need to start thinking differently about how to solve it. Until their *actual power* is threatened, marches are meaningless.

Sure it is. He knows it’s polite and decent to use when asking for anything. So he’d never use it himself. “Big guy, strong guy, comes up to me, ‘Sir… Mr President, please save us,’ He says, tears on his face. ‘no one can save us but you Mr. President sir!” He would never use it to ask for anything, it’s for ‘suckers and losers’ to beg him with.

I think 2025 was the year of saying our alliance means nothing and 2026 is the year of demanding help and threatening otherwise the alliance will mean nothing.... which is an awkward threat to make when you've already followed through on it.

Did anyone other than social media pundits truly believe that all of their military infrastructure was in Isfahan?
1129
cogit2 Apr 3, 2026 +395
No. Nor did we ever believe Trump's claim of significant military victory. Iran has been purpose-building a military to accomplish this for decades now, it's operating like a distributed guerilla army in its own country, knowing the unpopularity of the US getting involved with troops is extreme. So they've got their missile and Shahed supply distributed all over the country, with the Hormuz in range at every part of it. They just send up a few drones every time they need to remind the world they're still up. And every time they do so, Trump's claims look hollow on the world stage.
395
Thagyr Apr 3, 2026 +147
Probably why Trump is trying to wash his hands of it and saying it's someone else's problem.

52
_Budified Apr 3, 2026 +19
When Iran said they are no longer interested in any sort of negotiations with the west or their allies, and that they are now taking an offensive position, I figured this would be getting bad. Then when they attacked major infrastructure in many countries, I figured it was going to get worse fast. Now that the US and Israel are basically in this alone and responsible for it together, and it didn't really seem to get a whole lot worse very fast, I am left to wonder. What happened to the worldwide network of sleeper cells? They can't possibly be 'on alert and continue to standby for the keyword' this whole time and not 'activated' by this point.
19
West-Vacation8190 Apr 3, 2026 +26
its just a matter of time before fox news is reporting critical infrastructure being damaged by falling debris in the us
26
DeepThinkingMachine Apr 3, 2026 +14
that won't be happening but if a terrorist attack by an Iranian sleeper cell is carried out Trump would be completely and utterly fucked
14
[deleted] Apr 3, 2026 +11
I think the margin is even smaller than a landing a massive terror attack. If Iran gets just one hit on an aircraft and that pilot has to eject over Iran. If we don't pull off the most amazing rescue mission ever. Not sure most of the US and his base would be able to take a U.S. pilot being paraded thru Tehran.
11
shittyaltpornaccount Apr 3, 2026 +7
Sam batteries which need accompanying radar support (which also gives them away) are significantly harder to hide than missles systems that can be launched from the back off a scud truck and quickly relocate. Us and Israeli airforce has basically been operating with impunity over Iranian airspace. Nothing is impossible and it is still operating over a hostile country, but Iran's ability to field AA fire seems signifcantly degraded if not totally destroyed.
7
[deleted] Apr 3, 2026 +2
Fair! I would mostly agree but war is unpredictable and it only takes one lucky shot. My point isn't really about Irans AA chances too. Just an opinion that it wouldn't take a full scale terrorist attack. Only that one lucky shot to create a scene that most of America wont be ready for.

Trump has publicly gone on record and says that he fires people all the time and they write books on how he's a bad guy but he's making them rich in the process so it's not an issue for the person he fires. Case in point Pam Bondi today. Just wait a few months. She'll have a bestseller on the NY Times list.

Depends on which war you're talking about. Trump has claimed victory in part or outright for: * Armenia–Azerbaijan * Congo–Rwanda * Israel–Iran * India–Pakistan * Cambodia–Thailand * Egypt–Ethiopia * Serbia–Kosovo * Israel–Hamas * Iran 2 Electric Boogalo (Israel/US->Iran)

It was a funny news cycle. He declares victory during the day, and then you see the nighttime missile and drone videos. Then the next day, rinse and repeat.
13
hugganao Apr 3, 2026 +1
>So they've got their missile and Shahed supply distributed all over the country, not only is it all over the country, most of it is entirely underground with really fking compact/hard ground that bunker busters are useless against. it's gonna be pretty much hell to fight against Iran in their home turf.
1
flirtmcdudes Apr 3, 2026 +32
no, but our media reports what Trump says as if it’s news. Even though he lies about literally everything
32
U_Sound_Stupid_Stop Apr 3, 2026 +7
It's not good so I'm not defending it but news are reporting what officials and witnesses tell them, often in the format "A says x" and it's on you to decide if you believe the statement. They only tell you A made the statement.
7
flirtmcdudes Apr 3, 2026 +11
The issue is that journalism is failing if the person who made the statement has a history of lying about literally everything and then not mentioning it in the story. American media treats republicans with kid gloves all the time, just look at how the media like the New York Times covered Biden leaving Afghanistan to what Trump is doing right now in Iran. Night and day difference

Realistically, it could. But not with the way we are randomly throwing shit at the wall. Overwhelming force doesn’t mean much when you don’t use it. (Not saying I want this to happen, I’d much rather we fucked off out of there as soon as possible.)
2
Rathalos143 Apr 3, 2026 +3
It could, but it wouldnt be fast nor easy. It would be absolute hell to keep the region under control even after a victory.
3
AppropriateCattle69 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Right, holding it is an entirely different problem. And we would be hurting to do it. But if we had taken this seriously there’s a good chance we would already be within a few weeks of marines hanging Old Glory on a statue of the Ayatollah. I’m talking a legitimate troop buildup, not this piecemeal bullshit. Massive and well coordinated SEAD campaign and then an all-out combined arms assault. But instead we’ve fucked around with no clear objective, gotten soldiers killed, used up a decade of missiles, and are now in a legit shooting war that we are not in control of. And for what? So we *might* be able to send a couple thousand dudes to Slaughter Island? It’s f****** ridiculous.
2
EpicRedditor34 Apr 3, 2026 +4
America is much too casualty averse to have handled what would come from taking Tehran. We’d have needed to coordinate with allies a they would’ve needed to be down to invade Iran. This would’ve been pre gulf war Iraq with the terrain of Afghanistan, so thunder runs and things like that would’ve been far less effective. And the IED’s fly now.

The conquest of Persia wasn't as easy as you're describing it - it took like close to 40 years for the Khwarazmian empire and few other states to fall to the Mongol empire after lengthy multi-end conflicts.

I had a MAGA supporter telling me yesterday that taking out 70-80% of missiles is obliterated. Ah, no, obliterated means COMPLETELY destroyed. The 30% gives them all the strategic leverage they need to keep the world economy in a chokehold. They remain a functional fighting force capable of enacting their strategic plan and it's going terrifyingly well for them. This war is a total disaster for the world.

2
bliss19 Apr 3, 2026 +19
Not defending, but the US calculation still takes into account launch systems that are buried or inoperable in the usable estimate. In their eyes, even if it is buried in a bunker and not accessible, still means that it is functional (if dug out) and therefore taken into the account. Actual estimates put it under far less.
19
Virtual-Squirrel-725 Apr 3, 2026 +9
And I'm totally cool with the nuance of reporting, because that is all relevant. For THIS war a buried stash of missile launchers is effectively "off the battlefield". But a buried stash of 60% enriched uranium is safe and secure for post-war recovery. There is only one military capability right now that truly matters and that is what can hit vessels in the strait. As long as they have that leverage, they are winning and every day that goes by their negotiating leverage increases. Think about how the war narrative has changed in the last three weeks. Short-term shock to oil prices - annoying but tolerable. Medium-term shock - serious economic issues across the globe. Long term shock - global economic crisis! Iran decides when the oil shock ends - that's power.
9
cas18khash Apr 3, 2026 +1
Entrances to underground missile "cities" (what Iran calls them) have been bombed and then dug out in matter of hours. There is an estimate 50 underground launch complexes, all deep enough to need bunker busters, each with at least 20 entrances and who knows how many silo launch shafts and how many decoy entrances and silo shafts. Just cycling between these targets means enough time for Iran to dig out the entrances that were bombed earlier. You should look up Iran's missile cities - they've published a lot of videos on them through the years for deterrence purposes. They have whole solid fuel rocket factories underground, auto-reloading silos, and enough space to have hundreds of semi-truck mounted launch systems parked in tunnels tens of miles long. They've thought of getting buried for sure and they know how to dig themselves out, imo.

5
cogit2 Apr 3, 2026 +8
Trump's nightmare is Iran can fire a couple Shahed drones and keep the Hormuz closed and oil at $100 until the US has to capitulate to Iran's demands. All that for the price of $100k, versus $11 billion and counting for the US who can't even keep it open, while Iran also gets to reward its buddies China and Russia with c**** oil. Iran has won here, and this is going to get ugly for Trump. Uncomfortably so.

4
EuropaWeGo Apr 3, 2026 +2
I wouldn't doubt that they have the ability to still manufacture drones.  Russia's funding of their drone program blew up a few years ago and Iran's leadership isn't dumb. They knew any targets above ground would be susceptible to aerial attacks. Thus, it would make sense that anything military ties is tucked away somewhere that is difficult to find.

Weird....That orange guy said we'd won "in the first hour". What did we win exactly? Another 20 year war?

Think Donnie Dumbass has defeated Iran like three times in the past two weeks. So that’s what, 21 wars he’s won since being convicted and winning the Oval Office again?

Well, yeah, they had 40-years to prep for this... while Trump prepped for all of 8-minutes.

Don’t worry. Once Hegseth gets rid of our Intelligence agency, Iran will magically not even exist. (As long as you don’t travel to the Middle East.)

Who knew a country that has been preparing for a war with the US for decades still has missiles left. Iran is genuinely lucky that the admin is genuinely too stupid and incompetent to win.
