Also China has ordered its citizens and companies not to comply with United States sanctions a couple days ago.

I'm sure the talks will go over great, maybe China will do the world a favor. One can hope for a silver lining in this daily run if madness, right?

I would only hope we could get that lucky. I have a feeling China will not be so moral though.

>“Treasury will continue to cut the Iranian regime off from the financial networks it uses to carry out terrorist acts and to destabilize the global economy,” Bessent said.
Seems like the country attacking another for no real reason and destabilizing the global economy is right there in the room

Well, it's been like that since many years and no country, organisations, etc. have balls to call out this bullshit.

But Russia is ok and God forbid we sanction some American companies that have droves of chips and components showing up in Russian gear.

Tariffs for you, sanctions for you, tariffs for you. Sounds like Oprah giving away cars. Actually it sounds like the flailing of a pedophile rapist president that has no idea about military operations, much less economic policy.

We need to unwind the entire sanctions regime. This should be a top priority for any Democratic President. It's going to make people extremely uncomfortable because sanctions are one way we punish some legitimate violations of international law (e.g. the Russian invasion of Ukraine), but they are mostly a way to engage in massive economic violence without consequence.
As long as we have the ability to sanction countries without international cooperation, Republicans will abuse it.

That should be the top priority? Have you checked any news in the last 14 months (yeah it's only been 14 months). There are much higher priorities.

Most of the chaos has been due to unchecked foreign policy powers of the executive, including the power to start wars and sanction countries to death without UN approval.

If the conflict ended tomorrow, the world would still need a solution how to produce and route energy in such a way that a reignited Iran conflict does not have the same impact.
To this end, the world has to develop and implement these solutions today.
Which in turn creates a high incentive for the U.S. to become the one blockading the straight in the long term, even though Iran are the ones claiming to do that at the moment. Iran will beocme the 21st century version of a medieval army sieging a town for years until they give up from starvation.
