139
jaynort 2 days ago +73
Because a significant portion of American society chose to stay home instead of exercising the one little sliver of power they actually have. Or… had. We’re a very selfish, individualistic society with a “if I can’t single-handedly do something about it then why should I care” type of mentality. Voting doesn’t operate like that, so too many people just don’t give a shit.

I don't think the ability of the US Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz was ever in question. Unfortunately this does nothing to solve the actual problem

17
Xylus1985 2 days ago +133
The actual problem is that the Strait of Hormuz was blocked placing unnecessary pressure on the global energy market. No shit US Navy is not solving the actual problem.
133
Kooolxxx 2 days ago +40
It is a high-risk strategy. A blockade will undoubtedly squeeze Iran’s already hobbled economy and could prompt further talks — perhaps leading to an extended cease-fire. But it could also further disrupt oil supplies, push up prices and tempt Iran to again attack neighboring energy producers.
40
BoogieOogieOogieOog 2 days ago +107
High risk strategy with the most incompetent leaders and negotiators in every meaningful position. But yeah maybe we can make millions suffer because strategy F*** this. Strike the deal and cut off Israel. This if f****** insanity not some tactical battle
107
Kooolxxx 2 days ago +47
Roughly 40 per cent of the Gulf refining capacity has been damaged or destroyed by this senseless US and Israel led war, leaving as much as $58 billion of energy infrastructure damaged and over 12 million barrels short on the daily market.
47
BoogieOogieOogieOog 2 days ago +52
This is so distressing. The worst part to me is the average US citizen (I’m US as well) only sees a gas price bump. They have no clue that other countries are in a complete energy crisis. The devastation is remarkable and sickening I hate the depths humanity can reach
52
matengchemlord 2 days ago +10
I also hate what humanity does and the depths it can reach. But I also feel revulsion for those that don’t care about all of the extreme evils that have aways been happening until something perturbes the system, it starts costing them and they suddenly want to complain about it. Not even 6 months ago there was a city in Africa that got massacred to the tune of 60,000 dead (El Fasher massacre). The poor Ukrainians just being helped enough by the the rest of the civilized world to just sit at a bloody constant fighting standstill because that’s what the rest of Europe is most comfortable with. And everybody just tolerates Irans constant ongoing outrages against humanity that are getting worse. It’s really a terrible thing. What should happen is the rest of the world should say no to Putin, push Russia back fast and create a DMZ. And the rest of the world should also force the Islamic Republic from power because of what it has done.
10
vtccasp3r 2 days ago +54
The US voted for pure selfishness. The majority of people there dont care about anyone other than themselves or dont care at all. Shortsighted idiots.
54
the_fabled_bard 2 days ago +3
Those are not real numbers. It's just to justify hitting back hard. About 80% of that "damaged or destroyed refining capacity" should be repaired within a month once they're sure the bombs stop dropping. And that's 80% of a number that was more like 10% than 40%. This 40% was calculated as such: a huge refinery was touched by a single bomb or shrapnel: the refinery is counted completely damaged. It's an idiotic way of calculating. It's like saying your car is out of commission for 5 years because you got a flat because maybe so many people got flats at the same time that tires or garagists won't be available. And thus you will have to grow rubber trees from scratch and build a new factory to build a single tire. It doesn't hold into account reality. Some employee will do a double shift and that 40% will be 2% a couple weeks from now.

Killing the ruler and most of his family didn't work. Sinking the Iranian navy and drowning thousands of sailors didn't work. Bombing the country to the ground, hitting over 13,000 targets didn't work. What makes you think tightening up a few sanctions of an already heavily sanctioned country won't work?
4
kombiwombi 2 days ago +12
There is no way the US Navy can enforce the blockade as described. Stopping ships which have paid Iran a toll denominated in Yuan to Iran's Chinese accounts? How does the US Navy have any idea that payment happened. What happens if a ship doesn't stop. US doctrine is to board. So a bunch of lads with Manpads and a anti-ship missile can make the US Navy's day really suck. The asymmetry is massive. So if the Navy can't board it has to decide: missile or not. And then the Navy will have to rescue survivors. Or run the risk of sinking a Chinese ship, drowning an innocent Chinese crew, and watching them drown. Xi has barely lifted a finger in this conflict. But he'd have no choice; because of recent events the Chinese public are well fed up with Chinese nationals being murdered by foreign governments. This US policy is risking war. Everyone knows it.
12
Aegeus 2 days ago +13
>a bunch of lads with Manpads and a anti-ship missile can make the US Navy's day really suck. Sorry, are you suggesting that the Navy can't risk boarding *oil tankers* because they might be packing antiship missiles? Antiship missiles are kind of big things. You can't just have "a bunch of lads" carry one onto a tanker and turn it into an antiship platform, let alone the radar needed to guide it. Also, even if that was theoretically possible and Iran felt like throwing away a bunch of expensive tankers to make the Navy's job 1% more difficult, it would be pretty easy to tell which ships are dangerous because they're coming from Iran and not from China. China doesn't want to be at war either - they have no incentive to arm their cargo ships to try and provoke one.
13
Colbert2020 2 days ago +144
There's an endgame to this strategy. If Iran reaches maximum storage capacity, they'll have to stop pumping oil. This is very bad. Oil wells are designed to flow constantly. They can be stopped, but the longer they're offline the more dangerous and more slowly you have to bring them back online.
144
Durian881 2 days ago +35
It would have been good if US started with endgame in mind. At the moment, it feels like constantly shifting goalposts and endgame.

This is funny. The acronym of their 'not a war'-operations in Iran is OEF. Do you know what OEF stands for in the medical field? "oxygen extraction fraction" I've got a link to a 2025 paper about that: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12725078/#:\~:text=Cerebral%20Oxygen%E2%80%90extraction%E2%80%90fraction%20(,occlusive%20disease%20and%20ischemic%20stroke. After a quick read of the abstract you see the conclusion of their research: "Conclusion We showed that elevated cortical and subcortical OEF was associated with poorer cognition (particularly in executive function) among older adults with vascular risks, suggesting that OEF may be a useful biomarker for VCID." Do you know what VCID stands for? **Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia.** The second most common cause of cognitive impairment in older adults.
